The title says it all. I was thinking about the Randall Rx75 (y/n)?

i'm looking for a metallica type sound.

You can get a Mesa Boogie Mark III for around $700 that'll nail the old Metallica tone.

Woah, there's a Mesa Mark II combo on eBay right now for like $380.

The exact gear they used on the first four albums was a Marshall 100w head (KEA and RTL), and a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ (MOP and AJFA).

About the Randall RX75, don't pay more than $200 for it. The distortion is good but the cleans suck super hard. It has a pretty cold tone overall.

Well... It's hard to recommend amps "in general". There are a ton of good amps in that price range, but there aren't a lot that are very good at multiple tones in that range. You need to specify a sound, and then someone can say what is the best amp in the range for that tone.

That sounds really thick, like a Dual Rectifier. One of those could be within your price range.

Check out craigslist/ebay a lot too, can get amps a load cheaper than new.

You could try getting a JCM 800 clone, that will nail most thrash tones with the right boost. MIG-60 comes to mind. Maybe a Windsor but don't expect many cleans from it.
