well ive played guitar on and off for a few years, usually got bored of it and never got any good at it, anyway i decided to just stick it out and learn it as much as i can but im stuck where to go to get better atm, ive been basically just playing random easy riffs like Master of Puppets intro riff, Smoke On the Water, Enter Sandman, Troops of Doom etc, never got any better than playing simple riffs and i even screw them up 50% of the time

what exactly should i be doing to get better? just keep practicing harder and harder songs/riffs etc?, im trying to learn thrash riffs but cant seem to be able to keep the rythm

Try and play the songs you learn along with the recording. That will help you get up to speed.

Practice alternate picking exercises for speed (thrash). Also may want to look up the "spiderwalk" on youtube for finger dexterity.

play along with the songs you like, try and get used to the different rythm patterns and playing techniques.. eventually try and play the same without playing along with the recording.. it will prolly not sound perfect but that doesn't matter, try and mix those techniques and melodies you've learned with some of your own ideas.. after that, try to use your skills while improvising on the guitar.. from that moment on you can go all directions.. ;)

Not at all. While it is optimal to have thicker gauge strings for genres of Death Metal and such (simply for bass and attack), it isn't necessary to change your strings EVERYTIME.

Most Death Metal that I know of is usually in D standard or lower anyway.

there's also death metal bands that tune to E and Eb. your tuning should not limit you to a genre.

I'm not aware of any Death metal bands that tune to E standard. Among which do you enjoy?

Nice choices. Atheist is one of my personal favorites.

Deicide also uses E standard on some albums. I know they do on Legion at least.

What Arsis is in E standard? Everything I've heard from them is in drop C.
