Obviously, first things first, any creative decision you make when writing/recording songs should be driven by what you like, since presumably you're making music the way you'd like it to be. "If it sounds good, it is good."

But beyond that, what kinds of unorthodox things do you do in your music? Have you broken genre in any cool ways? Have you found a unique way to deliver vocals or dial in a guitar tone? If I were to listen to 100 random metal songs and yours was only one of them, what would stand out about your song?

I always thought Rob Halford put a lot of disco into his vocals

I like to do gothy/melodic lead guitar stuff with most metal styles. just add some chorus and switch to your neck pick-up. shredding solos are cool, but sometimes you just need something moody and melodic.

Well, I'm working on this drone project that also has dark jazz components. Doomjazzy Twin Peaksness.

Adding or imply 12-bar blues chord changes in a metal riff is always awesome.

Reaaaaally depends what genre. I can't stand it in black metal. But in stoner/doom metal, I love it.

I make a pretty strong effort to listen to my influences' influences so I've been channeling a lot of British folk rock revival (and other straight traditional folk), golden-age of jazz fusion and prog rock stuff of late.

I'm trying to introduce more Irish Folk into my black/doom band. More 6/8 songs for me!

i just make dark ambient\noise\drone, just atmospheric stuff. I love Black Metal to much to record it, dont want to get accused of copying some kvlt band if you get me. I would get burnt on a stake haha.

Look you dont create art for anyone but yourself in reality and if even one more person likes it you have achieved something. So you create whatever you feel like at that moment, shit if you want banjo in your Black metal song and it sounds good to you just fucking do it cause you like it :D

It's nothing new but lately I'm trying to incorporate baroque/classical orchestration to my songs:

A WIP of a song, probably will release it next month.

I'm right now playing drums in a heavy metal- punk band, so I try to incorporate elements from both styles. Then the "unconventional part" would be the pop-rock elements, like fills, some beats and stuff, I started playing drums listening and playing along to The Bangles songs, so there you go

I implement samples of nuclear sirens and explosions in my music. I actually started my project as a dark ambient project and the latest album is atmospheric black metal but I think it's a great combination. My project is called Atomization and all the lyrics are about Nuclear Warfare so it fits.

Essentially, I am trying to incorporate Jazz Fusion elements into metal properly. And as far as I know no one in metal or the progressive rock genre for that matter knows what the hell Fusion is about so there isn't any proper art in this area of experimentation. My goal is to shave off all the useless extended improvisational wank and weird shit that plagued Fusion (and what probably killed it) and just leave what is most important: virtuosic musicianship, well placed improvisation, complex/non-functional chord progressions, vamps, and insane musical crunchiness. Hopefully something amazing will come of this.

Personally I like ambient music, some dub, some jazz and stuff that is experimental in nature (manipulating audio files in ways bands like No Heat did back with tape in the 70-80s, minimalist music, strange (not necessarily strange, just not common) instruments, strange voice tones or even cryptic lyrics). Anything that sounds sorta strange but good will usually grab my ears attention.
