Hail and cheers!

Haha! This was a fun listen. I really don't have many complaints about this one. Sounds really well done.

Arkhane pretty much hit all the nails on the head of what I would've said. Good tunes thus far just marred by production

So below is a much better mix, with a little more guitar recorded. The vocals and synth still need to be recorded, but I am pretty happy with it myself.

Any thoughts?

I'm digging it, I'm taking it that there will be some vocals on top of this at some point. the first portion of the song seemed to drag on and then about mid way it really picked up and really got interesting and I feel it could've been extended out further, even throwing in a lead. it just seems like the entire more interesting end is just rushed and wrapped up way too quickly.

CF_Mono, Poisoned By Life is very well written and performed. I don't really like the main fuzz tone in this context because some of the palm muted chugging lacks percussive power due to that woofy bottom end. But it's a small matter. Overall it works very nicely, well done!

Thanks a ton for the input Arkhane and ShaolinLambKiller. In regards to the later section feeling rushed: yeah, I can see that, though I was wanting the end section to be a bit on the shorter side, and while the first section is drawn out (it ended up longer than I had initially intended), I think it will all come together once the vocals are tracked. The vocalist is a good friend of mine who has participated in a number of black metal bands, though this is all he does now a days, and his voice is fantastic.

Here is what will be the final mix until we get the vocals tracked:

I'll have to check it when I get back home, my laptop doesn't load soundcloud. but really I think you could easily expand that end making that song much more epic and satisfying. From what I remember it has a great feel of Primordal. It'd be a shame if you cheat out on it.

Hmmmm, well, I just might have to flesh it out a bit more. It really could benefit from a bit more during the more epic part of the song. If nothing else, it will probably end up being rewritten a bit and re recorded at soe point down the line.

I am actually leaning towards extending it a bit via some lead guitar, though not in the same fashion as the two lead bits earlier in the song. The more I listen to it, the more I don't want that part to end yet, and I think that would likely be a good way of fleshing it out.

If you did, I can't tell. The only difference I'm catching is the vocals are louder, and truthfully, I prefer the old version.

In order to correctly pan the guitars, you have to record them more than once, and then set them to the left and right speakers. Copy and paste doesn't work (at least not in my experience) and any kind of reverb/delay won't help either. If you try to copy and paste, it will only center the sound in the middle again IF it doesn't give it some weird modulation effect you don't want.

Copying and pasting is so lame. Just record another track for the panning dude :P

Nekrohazerd, I think most of us self recording musicians have tried it before when we were starting out... I think. I remember trying it and wondering what I was doing wrong, or if my DAW was just a cheap knockoff. It's all part of the learning curve.

It's written well enough, sounds like a melodic type of black metal. I can hear an abhorrent amount of volume clipping though, so that would be my first step besides finding some decent drum software (or a drummer :P)

Yep. been there done that and wondered why it was so horrible, kept fucking with the eq and passing filters till I finally had completely destroyed the guitar tracks and restarted.. tried two separate ones. worked better at least.

Hopefully the final mix on this song. Snare seems leveled, and the rest of the drums sound awesome. I just had to turn it down a nad bit, and take away some of the tom presence to get the drums out of your face, but still strong in the mix. Any feedback is appreciated.

@Archane Really like the song. Somehow reminds me Opeth, the growls are absolutely astonishing. One of my favorite types of death metal vocals. The only thing that I miss in the mix is that (to me) the drums have too much presence in the center and no "breathing space" in the pans (excluding the floors). I would go for more stereo-expanding the drums. Otherwise excellent work!

The drums were recorded using a 5 mic set-up; 2 toms, kick and snare, and a single overhead. I'm not sure if there is any way to spread the cymbals out (utilizing the cymbals bleeding into the toms or something), but I'll play with it a little bit. Probably end up sampling some of the crash hits into another track and just pan it out like that. Now that you mention it, it sounds like the hihat is too close to center also.

Thank you for your feedback. :)

Edit: No new posts, so I'll just edit this one.
I tried sampling the crash, also tried using the original drum program to supplement a couple of cymbals (which I did NOT keep, by the way). Now, I think I figured it out. What I did was I used the single overhead mic as the SECONDARY... yes, secondary cymbal track, filtered it with a low pass, and I removed the low pass from the 2 toms and spread them a wee bit more. This way, the toms sound a little sharper, but the placement of the ride is where it should be, the crash and splash have a good but subtle presence, and the hi-hat is centered but not too thin. Essentially the tom mics are placing the cymbals where they should be, and the overhead mic is supplying the thickness of the cymbals and giving them life.

Forgive me if this is a common trick, I don't read up much on producing music and I just figured this out about an hour ago.
Here is the new mix: https://soundcloud.com/matthew-brown-21 ... second-mix

InThyKingdom, it also reminded me of Opeth when I heard it :)

I think I said this in another thread, but I really like the sad riffs and the vocals are great too. I played drums on the song (based on Arkhane's programmed drums) and another overhead mic is next on my to-buy list (not sure when though). Just an idea, but another option could be to turn the overhead track into a fake stereo track by using two tracks and panning them and moving one of them over a tiny bit, or using different EQ on one, or something like that. You'd have all cymbals on both sides, but maybe it would free up the middle a bit (I haven't actually tried that on overhead before).

Edit: haven't listened to the new mixes yet, but will check them out on my laptop soon

Arkhane, yeah I'm pretty sure I prefer the second mix for the reasons you are saying. That is a really cool trick, nice work!

Thank you both, very much. :)

I think that will still give it a weird chorus-like effect that would not sound good at all on something like cymbals. At least on my DAW it does. Beforehand, I also tried giving the overhead a little delay and reverb to try to spread the signal, but even with almost no feedback it really messed with the cymbal hiss.

If I'm correct, though, the only thing I had to do was remove low pass from the toms, replace it on the overhead, and finally turn down the overhead signal a tad to make up for the extra cymbal noise poking through. The low pass wasn't set very low either, just enough to get rid of the ultra high end presence.

It really makes me feel good to hear that. It's not really a 'needing approval' type thing, but more of a 'I'm glad to be able to share something with someone and lead them through a story of sorts'.

Red As Blood Within has got some killer riffs man. \m/ And man, those clean/growling vox. It's like.... a better Opeth.

I just did this. Not metal, but by all means was totally fun to make.

It's weird, because I moved on a long time ago from Opeth after they released Heritage and have been taking influence more from Bathory and Hypocrisy, among others. But I can't deny Opeth is still a big part of my song influence, even after a few years, haha!

Edit: I had forgotten to credit the drum performance on the soundcloud file to CloggedUrethra (well, using his actual name). I'm sorry.

I have never seen whatever show that cover came from, but it was really well mixed. Like a sort of dirty punk rockish vibe. I'm not too familiar with the style, but I can't complain besides the fact that it's not in my taste palette. Well done, bro.

I've gotten much better at production. I'm more conscious of the bass and kick tones but I'm still a sucker for high and end especially jangly shit like Dino Jr. haha.

it was a cover of this.

Arkhane, Clogged top notch. Finally got to listen to it. I hear the Opeth influences and the Hypocrisy ones but overall it reminds me more of Novembre.

Nice track Arkhane, you've got a good voice, did you do everything yourself? Either way well done.

I've been working on some atmospheric, not completely metal based music lately. I haven't been on these forums in years though, so hi everyone.

Welcome back dude!

I like your track, the composition is quite nice. The way the distorted guitar sits kind of in the distance of the mix gives it a good atmosphere. That lead in the last section is a very nice touch as well.
