So, I got Dirt today and I'm hearing it for its entirety for the first time (it's the last of the first four albums I'd yet to acquire). Honestly, it's kind of underwhelming... Black Gives Way to Blue was my first Alice in Chains album, and even after listening to all of the others I feel like it's hundreds of miles ahead of all their other material. The first three albums just seem so short-sighted, with their overly sing-songy chuggy riffs that don't seem to pay mind to melody, choruses that don't make much sense, and general lack of intelligent composition. Meanwhile, BGWTB is literally perfect, or damn near close to it: it's absurdly heavy, much more legitimately moody, the vocals are better (I slightly prefer DuVall to Staley, but I also appreciate the upped presence of Cantrell's singing on that album), the vocal *harmonies* in particular are astonishing, and the songwriting feels so natural and smooth on that album. It also succumbs to a lot less of the quietLOUDquietLOUDquietLOUD dynamics than the first three albums seem to adore.

Am I alone in feeling this way? That the band went from relatively decent to holy-shit-one-of-the-best-albums-of-all-time but only post-reunion?

Nah the s/t and their two EPs are still the best they did. Black Gives Way to Blue is really good too though. I'd put their newest on par with Dirt and Facelift though - very solid.

I've got a hold recently of TDPDH and it's pretty good. It's surprising that a post-reunion band can maintain such a high quality of releases.

I think Facelift and Dirt are amazing. There are plenty of memorable, or so to say, timeless tracks on them. The only other album I've heard is BGWTB, which is also pretty good. I've missed few releases in between but the general feeling I get is that the band hasn't wavered too much in terms of putting quality stuff out there. That said, BGWTB has some good tracks but not nearly at par with - Dam that river, Man in the box, Sea of sorrow, Angry Chair, Would etc. But I definitely agree with the sentiment that their post-reunion material is quite good overall.

I'd say Dirt is probably their best album. BGWTB was really good, but to be perfectly honest, I like the new one better.

So last night started nice enough, sat down to drink a Guinness, smoke a cigar and talk politics with my roommate. Then we decided to have a bit of whisky some guy left at our house (we live in a frat house so people are always leaving behind alcohol). Next thing we know it's past 4 and we're both plastered watching Rob Ford videos. Had to wake up early completely hung over for a morning class which turned out to be cancelled anyway.

I lucked out in that the vast majority of my morning classes were lectures where I could nod off if necessary, while my discussion classes were later in the afternoon.

That said, I was almost missing that college lifestyle, when a weekend of partying with some old friends last weekend reminded me that I have somehow lost a significant portion of my alcohol tolerance compared to even 4 years ago.

According to the FB page, Perturbator just signed on to Blood Music as its first non-metal band. Woohoo, Perturbator!

The self titled is just so good for AIC, although I may be starting to sound like a broken record here. It's just such an immersive, transformative experience. I love the band for their sorrowful nature and down-and-low emotions expressed, the moodier side rather than the heavy side. So the s/t, with its complete broken down-ness, really appeals to me. As a whole album I think it's about perfect. Dirt and Facelift definitely have a lot of their heavy as hell classics though.

Nonalcoholic beer fails to check the "tastes like beer" requisite.

But the other crap does? By definition there can't be a nonalcoholic beverage that tastes more like beer than nonalcoholic beer.

Aha! He doesn't sing
"And the ship sails on, back to the north
Through the fucking ice and the albatross follows on"
but instead "through the fog and ice"!
I always misheard it and it bewildered me.

I saw AIC live a couple of weeks ago. New singer ("son of Lenny Kravitz") is a gun. I tend to think the 2 EP's are their strongest work, along with the unplugged album. Then S/T, then the 2 new ones, then dirt and facelift.

Yeah, that's just stupid. If it's below 4% alcohol, it's not beer.

Bash! Piffle! Tipsy! You can find plenty of nice beers that are under 4%.

This is just fucking sick. The lawyers are trying to say he wasn't thinking clearly, but his interview not only proves that he was, but also that he's completely apathetic about it.

Little late on the AIC talk, but I love Facelift & Dirt both to death. There are however a couple of tracks that I could do without hearing ever again (looking at you Rooster in particular...), but overall they're classics for mine. Black Gives Way to Blue impressed me beyond words really for an album that (obviously) has no Layne, but there you go... Excellent record. The new one is still growing on me, but Hollw kicks ass, & there are a number of cool tracks however.

Back in 1996, AIC was my favourite band. However, I haven't really gotten into either of the post-reunion albums. I don't know what it is, really. The music is nice and there are plenty of good qualities. Perhaps it's just that I am too far removed from my 90s self. I still like Jerry's voice but duVall doesn't sound different enough from Layne.

Jerry Cantrell's Degradation Trip albums are fuckin' huge - definitely recommended to anyone who hasn't heard them. I'd say it's probably better than new AIC just for how iconoclastic and catchy the songs are. Tremendous stuff, a few filler cuts, but with like 25 songs, who cares?

There exactly 4 AiC songs I like: We Die Young, It's Not Like That, Dam That River and from the reunion....Check My Brain.

They were much better when they were faster.

Nice, I'm seeing them this summer at this fest (now the biggest one in Québec). My dad lives nearby, like a 5 minutes walk from the place and he rents his ground for campers. He made like $1500 last year so he paid my ticket this year. Sure there's plenty of crap bands but there's some I want to see and I could just go back at my dad's during the shitty stuff.
Spoiler: show

I really like the 2 latest AiC, it's as strong as their best albums in my opinion. Perhaps one of the only bands (alongside Rush) who's releasing very strong material after their peak.
