Hi everyone,

I am going to visit Iceland for the first time in September, for a week and a half, mostly day trekking. Have one or two free evenings in Reykjavik, also one night in Akureyri.
Any recommendations for metal related places? Anything on Metal Travel Guide still relevant? (I know it's not very much updated)

Thanks folks!

Well, there is Dimmuborgir :D Also, just glaciers, geysirs and lava in general is pretty metal! I have family there, so I've been there often, but I'm not familiar with the music scene there at all.

Húrra is the bar where they hold Oration, which is the underground black metal festival in Iceland, where bands like Svartidauði and Misþyrming play, but I don't think it's a metal bar as such. It could be a good place to start though, because the people there might be able to help due to those connections. There are some rock bars like Dillon, but they're not very impressive if you're looking for an actual metal club with the real stuff playing, and genuine metalhead clientele.

A word of warning: while the locals are very friendly and hospitable, mentioning black metal seems to get some bad reactions from people, even young guys. There may be some cultural rifts between those groups of people that foreigners might not completely understand. Here in Finland it's nothing special if you mention that you're visiting a town for their black metal fest, but besides Iceland, I've only ever seen similar sudden aloofness in rural Germany upon mentioning that style of music. They're much fonder of their Björk and Sigur Rós than anything else.

If you want to visit a record store, Geisladiskabúð Valda usually has an ok selection of metal on cd and vinyl and is perhaps worth a visit. There's also Lucky records which specialises in vinyl. Other than that I don't know what to recommend as there are no metal bars or clubs in the country. That said, metal gigs are relatively frequent in Reykjavík and I would check out whether there are any taking place while you are here. The metal gigs here are usually held in a place called Gaukurinn (but it's not a metal bar as such).
