http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

So a few people in the FFA started posting their own results of a political spectrum test that I had initially posted my results for. Since it was on a role for a few posts in that thread, I felt we can have a thread specifically for taking the test, posting our results, and discussing among ourselves our answers and our reasons for answering the way we did.

For starters, here is my original graph.

Spoiler: show

Economic Left/Right: -6.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.56

In the nearly two years since I first took this, I am a bit more right than I used to be, but I am still pretty much entirely a dirty left wing CommuNazi that wants to take away your guns, God, and make rich people pay more. At least that's what I am according to the modern Republican nutjob.

Not as bad of an evil muslim atheist (yes I understand that makes no sense but people believe it) communist as you are, almost thought that I'd wind up on the right economically.

This is mine. As you can see I'm a hard right Libertarian, have been ever since I started reading the works of Murray Rothbard. I consider the State stifling, restricting, inefficient and unneeded, and I support homesteading, private property, free markets, voluntarism and personal liberty.

I identify as a communitarian, but I do borrow heavily from libertarian thought. Some of the questions just aren't good, because there is no "I don't care" option, or you know that the accurate answer carries a implication that you don't support. For example, just because a person thinks something is immoral, doesn't mean they want the government to get involved on it, but the test will interpret that as right-leaning.

I do agree that the quiz not only should have a selection for "undecided" or "don't care", but there also aren't enough questions relating to things that have become relevant political topics since the quiz was first created, such as gun control which has no questions relating to it on the quiz.

Isn't that kind of the point, though? Wouldn't you want the quiz to maintain relevancy when taken across many different countries, some of which may not have a large focus or weight on the issue of gun control? Wouldn't you also want it to maintain relevancy after a point in time when widespread gun control procedures (or lack thereof) might effectively remove that point of debate from consideration? If anything, the questions should be more based on political concepts rather than social concerns, not vice versa.

I also disagree with the notion that the quiz should add an "I don't know", since this would allow people to refuse to answer questions regarding issues or concepts they have no opinion on and would subsequently result in a rather selective or unrepresentative graph as the end result. I believe people will find that, in the end, they can form an opinion on almost anything; with that in mind, I don't see why asking for such in a situation such as this, where you're trying to encompass the grand scope of someone's beliefs, is unreasonable. It's also worth noting that you can receive a score very close to the origin of the graph even with no "I don't know/don't care" option, so it's not like the quiz is forcibly pushing your opinions towards extremity. It all seems very reasonably presented to me, overall.

The results definitely didn't surprise me. Cool little survey.

Me, about a year ago before I started taking an interest in economics and political philosophy.

This quiz has a number of drawbacks, sometimes the placings don't seem right for certain people, I've found this one to be more accurate.

Oh man, some of these questions...

They really need a "none of the above" option, although I'm sure that would complicate whatever algorithm they used to get the scores.

Economic Left/Right: -3.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -8.15

I think I've moved a bit to the left since I last took this test.

There are some questions lifted word for word from the test in the OP in the one from HelloQuizzy.

Far too many boring questions about social issues, the other test was a little more interesting.

having observed this test crop up on various forums over a decade or more, on observation i would offer is this: If you want to see how you compare internationally, if you live in the US, shift the baseline where the squares intersect 20% at least down and to the left. According to this, what qualifies as quite far to the bottom left is the centerist position in most places elesewhere in the world.

I've been keeping a tab on how my political compass changes over time. Ever since I started this year, I've noticed that my compass has been shifting further to the left which coincides with me starting university.

I just redid the test and this is what I have right now.

Economic Left/Right: -8.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.08

Spoiler: show

I'm pretty surprised how far to the left I've moved since my last test in September. I thought this would be a progressive move to the left but it looks like it'll just jump sporadically. There's no telling what would happen in a retest in a few month's time.

I must echo this. I've never thought of myself as a libertarian.

I'm incredibly right wing for MA.

It is worth noting though that a lot of the MA userbase is very young. I'd be interested to see more of the 25+ demograph take this test, and see if we have so many left wing libertarian scores in the older age group.

Perhaps its the demograph attracted to metal. Metal does by its nature attract the angry, outcast and the rebel. I am surprised by the few >25 results though. I really thought some of them would have grown to change their views as they became older.

It's just a test ya know... I consider myself to be a little bit more to the right... but I'm talking about dutch right, and that would be considered pretty leftist by US standards.

I took this a long time ago and was a lot farther left, but pretty much the same on libertarian. What sucks about this test is that it only has the agree/disagree options, there's basically an implicit acceptance of the current political system written into the test, which is annoying...

As I said before, an "I don't know" option would essentially break the test. You can't possibly tell me that you are incapable of summing up your feelings on the issues into an overall "agree" or "disagree".

Not a big surprise if you've ever seen me post on "serious" issues around these parts (something I've essentially given up on).

I didn't take this previously, so I have no prior basis for comparison.

I don't really mind if you think I'm crazy, but I will say that Walter Block makes a pretty good case for child labour and many other things attacked by modern society in his book "Defending the Undefendable". You should give it a read.

:durr: Defending the Undefendable? Seriously? I mean, I guess I shouldn't really be surprised but... seriously? Almost every theory Walter Block postulates as fact has been thoroughly refuted by... pretty much everybody. Even most Libertarian apologists.
