Those bastards at SuddenLink suspended my Internet for torrenting Porn of the Dead. Of all the hundreds of movies I've obtained illegally, they catch me for that. And wouldn't you know it would actually say the title in the suspension notice. Try explaining to your father what Porn of the Dead is. I really need to move out sooner or later, but it's so nice not living the dorm life. Guess I'll have to fit in more hours at work...

Try Ultrasurf or Tor. Ultrasurf is much easier to use, but Tor is far more comprehensive. They are both free, and may help you be anonymous if your internet comes back.

WHY would you want Porn of the Dead? I mean, it's not too terrible, but not something I would watch as a porno.

In the interest of full disclosure, I will flat out admit that the day after high school graduation, I put most everyone I went to school with on block and stopped answering phone calls. I haven't talked to any of them in the decade-plus since, including my best friend from middle school and much of high school. As shitty as it sounds, I really do think those people held me back and my life has been better since jettisoning them and getting a real opportunity to start over.

You're right. That does sound shitty.

TheOldOne is alright, I don't see anything wrong with him, he's not even Australian... I've talked with XIxix in PM, he's posting a lot less since. The Sane Asylum died after 600 pages or so. We're safe for now. Remember guys, women and children first.

 That is such a funny comment (and I love Deceased too so it makes it even better). I can see what you mean, though. I went through a long period of wearing nothing but metal shirts, being all "metal", etc" One day in 2006 I woke up and I fucking hated all of the "metal image" bullshit and I couldn't stand wearing metal shirts anymore. When I would put on a metal shirt I felt so foolish. Now I just stick to plain, solid color tops and that's it.

Sure, the whole thing was fun for awhile because I hated the crap that I had to wear as a kid and metal shirts weren't really available in my town back in the day (other than a random Metallica or Anthrax shirt). But eventually. that whole look just ran it's course with me.

This weekend I'll be playing a show in a Powerviolence band with a couple friends of mine. Should be fun, considering we don't have a single song and haven't practiced once.

I imagine that we will all be hopelessly trashed as well.

As for the whole people growing out of metal thing, I totally understand it. I used to only wear black clothes and listen to only metal except for a bit of punk and rock. Lately I've been listening to hip-hop and various sub genres of electronic music just as much as metal and by the way I dress you would never be able to tell that I'm into metal. I do think its douchey that the guy turned all "bro" just to get laid. People change, and thats not a 'betrayal' or anything. I think its a bit strange when one thing is basically someone's entire personality, be it metal or something else.

It's a little like a new year's resolution, or a new Spider Man movie. It gives the community a chance to feel like they're turning over a new leaf, reinventing themselves, discovering new territory, refreshing the outlook in a saner, more responsible, and clearly more mature way. New thread title, feels all shiny. Like untrodden snow. Even with full knowledge that it will be riddled with untold amounts of bile and excrement in time, and festooned with shame, for that initial fleeting moment it feels like things will be different this time.

I love that the second post in this thread is an MLP pic. I can imagine many MA regulars accidently clicking on the thread rather than the last page, and, upon seeing the MLP pic, do that old cartoon thing where smoke comes out of their ears and the top of their heads come off and smoke comes out.

Autistic manchildren are an important part of our social collective.

Also, iAm, forgot to thank you for that badass Greys rec a couple of weeks ago, since I haven't been listening to my iPod/computer library all that much, I haven't been on last.fm in awhile.

What, working retail jobs means they're beneath your friendship? Unless they're drug addicts and you were getting away from them for that reason, you sound like a terrible person.

Sometimes you assess the relationships you're in and you're not pleased with them. Sometimes you realize they're largely negative influences. So you can make a choice: Is it worth keeping those relationships together or should you pack up and move on for your own sanity? Maybe for a couple of them it seemed sudden. I could honestly care less. In my life, enough things had changed that I felt it was time for me to make a big move, and like I said, I look back with zero regrets whatsoever. I'm not going to give you my life story here ages 16-24, but that's how I see it. I can understand someone deciding to make a big change like that.

Sometimes you're also a crappy friend. I mean, maybe you've left out big parts of why you weren't pleased with those relationships and your friends were users or criminals or something, and I can understand naturally drifting apart due to having less and less in common with them over time, but from what you've told us it sounds like you're the selfish one. Yeah, they're probably glad to be rid of you too if you're that arrogant.

Of course I'm leaving large parts of the story out. This isn't the "GodsOnSafari tells the story of his life and opinionz 4 u on living" thread, right? Maybe you see me and AH's estranged friend as being equivalently awful people. Just understand that I'm not posting here seeking your personal admiration.

There are good people who work retail jobs who keep the salespeople industry alive... and then there are bad people who work retail jobs. The kind who do so because retailers can't usually be bothered to do background checks or drug screenings or care why you got fired from your last eight jobs in the past two years. The kind who aspire to do nothing with their lives but always complain about how "the system" is against them.

If you've ever worked retail, you've probably met some people like this. And I believe those are the people gos is referring to as the people he cut off. Truth be told, I did the same thing after high school, and while I'm making a living doing research in a lab and enjoying every minute of it, they're still working at Best Buy, listening to Korn, and bitching about how their home town sucks even though they've never tried to leave it.

Swap out Korn with Bush or the Bosstones and you've pretty much killed it.

This is a bit of a tangent, but I'm going to throw out there that drug screenings are invasive and completely unnecessary for most jobs.

I think it's reasonable that employers wouldn't want their employees showing up high. If someone tried to sell you something, and they were clearly on something, that could reflect bad on the company, maybe it could even cost them a sale or two.

Invasive, maybe. Unnecessary...not really. You're not gonna be doing your job to your full potential while stoned.

Especially if heavy, fast-moving, automated equipment is involved.

While that is true, would you really doubt that 90% of employees would show up stoned if their bosses didn't ask questions?

I enjoyed showing up to work high at bitch places that drug test. Synthetic urine man! I have a right to work and a right to be as high as I please! Sometimes you get fired for it but all well.

Riiiiight. I would totally drop 3 hits of acid every morning if I could get away with it. Probably hoop some MDMA over lunch too.

But really that's flawed thinking. Not every person that has a beer will be an alcoholic and not every person who smokes weed will smoke it all the time. Most won't in fact.

So you agree that drug testing is completely unnecessary? If the employer really must know if their employees are coming to work high, then they must resort to other methods. If they just want to fire people who do illegal drugs, I suggest they include people who get drunk on the weekends too.

Kinda understand gods here. I know plenty of fucking deadbeats that went on to do nothing with their lives. I mean, they seem to be happy getting high/drunk everyday and working there minimum wage jobs, but there's nothing there for me in a relationship like that. Friendship ain't a one way street, honestly, I don't think it's selfish at all to end a friendship to a person who's turned into a piece of shit, as long as you've told them how you feel or whatever, or if you tried to help them, whatever the situation is.

One thing you guys haven't seemed to talk about much is what these minimum wage people are actually like as human beings, rather than merely occupiers of a particular social/economic echelon. I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be any debate going on here at all if you just made it clear that these people were despicable douchebags or junkies or something instead of talking about their goals or job situations or what have you. You can work a shitty job and not have much in the way of aspirations and still be a really kind, worthwhile person.

I mean, maybe you've left out big parts of why you weren't pleased with those relationships and your friends were users or criminals or something, but from what you've told us it sounds like you're the selfish one.

Shit man, you're the one that brought up details of your personal life in the first place, and you brought them up in a way that made you sound like a douche. So I called you a douche. I don't care why you're posting.

So you agree that drug testing is completely unnecessary? If the employer really must know if their employees are coming to work high, then they must resort to other methods. If they just want to fire people who do illegal drugs, I suggest they include people who get drunk on the weekends too.

While you could make an argument about testing for pot being unnecessary, I think testing for 'hard' drugs like heroin, meth, etc. is totally warranted. Hiring someone and training them and doing all the involved paperwork requires a lot of time and effort (and money) and if the person is so much of an addict that they can't even lay off the needle or pipe for a while before a job interview then there's slim chance they'd perform too well at the job. Similarly, if the person is an alcoholic and is drunk at an interview, I wouldn't expect them to get hired either.

They'd also likely be stealing shit from their place of work. Heroin costs $$$!

Calling drug testing invasive is a bit of a stretch. You go and piss in a jar, it's not that bad.

Is there a way to do that without entering TL;DR territory about stereotypical Dante-from-Clerks-esque figures you've never met? Just because there are people in your peer group when you're in elementary school that you read comic books with doesn't mean you have to be friends with them rest of your entire life. I don't see what is so difficult or shocking about such a statement.
