Someone asked me for band data from the site in order to feed it into a machine-learning algorithm that generates new results that resemble the input data -- in this case, band names, genres, countries. I thought the results might be amusing to some of you, so you can view that on this page: http://lewisandquark.tumblr.com/post/16 ... al-network

Some of the names are fairly believable, heh. I find that in many cases, the genre doesn't really fit with the name, though, but I've been told it's possible that the AI might have been able to produce better correspondence there if it had been left to train for a longer time on the input data. Still, interesting experiment.

Deathcrack is a great name.

Inhuman Sand sounds like something a person would have as their username on this website. :P

Sux would be a really good heavy metal/hard rock band name.

Yeah, the names all seem pretty metal, but most don't fit the genres very well. I want to know how it came up with the name Sespessstion Sanicilevus. It sounds like a cross between a goregrind and symphonic death metal band.

Thanks for sharing, that was awesome! Now I wonder how long it is before all those band names are actually taken.

"Dragonsulla and Steelgosh" are from "Tuera"- but where is Tuera? (maybe I don't know my geography.)

I actually can't believe Deathouse and Sqeen haven't been used yet. Maybe my next band will pick that name.

Yeah, it seems like it made up a country while it was at it. :) The person who made the list joked: "Tuera's heavy metal scene is small but vibrant. Dragonsulla and Steelgosh were amazing enough on their own, but once they teamed up..."

Here are a few more names that didn't get published, that she had sent me earlier:

Quote:
Deathcole,Thrash Metal,United States
Verkless Glory,Groove Metal,Russia
Verking of the Beats,Thrash Metal/Crossover Thrashcore,Netherlands
Verro Addict,Heavy/Progressive Metal,Canada
Stsider,Thrash Metal,Poland
Sub. Narak,Sludge Metal/Deathcore,France
Stkalkrid,Death Metal,Japan
Vernalian,Heavy Metal/Hard Rock,Italy
Verlafheim,Melodic Death/Thrash Metal,Portugal
Stiengua Curilhe,Technical/Progressive Death Metal,Australia
Verdel Bodör,Thrash/Death Metal,Mexico
Verckamwamn,Progressive Metal,United States
Verrejnospy,Heavy/Stoner Metal,United Kingdom
Vergotro,Heavy Metal,Portugal
Skimmedi Boma,Black/Speed Metal,Germany
Veuboth,Black Metal,France
Stythsfallingdam,Power/Thrash Metal,United States

It seems like it was really obsessed with nonsense words starting with V or S for a while.

A cringy list of stupid band names. Skynet, at this point, is still that uninitiated, booger-smeared weirdo who hasn't gotten what it's about and who's not invited to the party/community (yet - but at least I'll keep bullying it to keep it in its assigned place: On the other side of the door).

I tried to add Verb and it got rejected yeah right got told it was indy rock. It's fucking not indy, it's metal, they don't can you please CLEAN YOUR EARS. But fine, blacklisted. But THEN I tried to add Suffer the Blue and some asshole moderator told me that Suffer the Blue is technical post rock with some harsh vox. Are you fucking kidding me!? They're clearly atmospheric melodic black metal. What the fuck!?!? If Woods of Ypres are metal then Suffer the Blue is metal I can't believe it! The moderators don't know metal unreal pretention.

Pretty much anything that seems quite generic, using common words, such as Black Shadow, Death Fog, and anything similar to that.

You can make a program which you just enter your name or some magic text, and the program will pick up random names from bins it chose from the algorithm.

Back when I worked at UPS, a friend and I would point out random shit printed on boxes as possible use for band names.

His favorite was Photo Conductor Unit. Mine was Chemica Bio Chemica.

One day, a box split open and spilled a shitload of One Night in Paris porn DVDs all over the place. But that has nothing to do with this topic. That was just for fun.

As good as "Chaosrug" is, I think my favorite is "ChaosWorge le Plague". It sounds like a bedroom black metal project based in Kansas whose sole member is 15 years old and trying to convince people he's from France.

EDIT: Also a big fan of the symphonic metal band "Sht". Sounds like something a spectator would mumble under their breath to their buddy during one of their concerts.

We need one of those specifically for French black metal band names.

The way the algorithm would work would be certain consonants, specifically "B" "K" "V" and "Z" would occur three times as often as other consonants, and would be strung together with other random letters. However the ending would either end in "-tre" or "-Hme" or "Kre."

Some examples of band names generated by this algorithm would be:

Brogzoravobvtre
Zokirbatvtre
Nazvbrovglevtrevbtre
Krovmhwobvektrevhme
Brenoritvrezorkre
Vhrezokprevkmervkre
Ehremervborklevhme

(hmmm, I think one of those may be an actual real band name; whoops I better check into that.)
