A few years back when i had no way of going out to buy cds, i got a friend of mine to buy tons for me off his ebay account, then id pay him the money in exchange for the cds. At one point i was pretty low on cash, so i got him to buy some cassettes for me. I got Slayer - Divine Intervention, Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated and Butchered at Birth all on tape now. Havnt bought any since then, aside from my Mayhem Deathcrush demo tape but its really old and fucked up so i dont want to listen to it incase it explodes or something.

That's pretty sick. I'd love to have Cannibal Corpse on tape.

I still have most of my old tapes. Got rid of about 150 original demos back in 2001-2002 because I really needed money at the time (yes, I regret it now). I remember selling my Lord Foul and Irreverent demos for $15 a piece and later seeing copies go for $50+ on eBay. The rest of my orig. demos are packed in boxes after I moved a little while ago. Probably have 200-250 left.

As far as cassette albums, I never got rid of any of those. Still got my original Metallica and Slayer tapes from the 80's, everything from King Diamond, Priest, Helloween, etc; and just about every prominent thrash or DM album released on a major label prior to 1995. Tons of Wild Rags stuff as well. Of course most of them just collect dust these days, while many others are unlistenable due to sitting on the car's dash board for months at a time. I even kept the cheap pirated stuff that I bought at flea markets in Poland in the early 90's (mostly Roadrunner and Nuclear Blast releases). Some other weird stuff that I kept: The Simpsons Sing the Blues (1990), Green Jelly and various hair metal. :oh shit:

The rest (at least 2000 tapes) is all dubs from my 7 or 8 years of tape trading. By 2003 I was getting tired of dealing with people who only wanted to trade CDRs and MP3s, and in June of that year Geocities/Yahoo terminated my account for "obscene material" on the old Profanatica page I used to run (1999-2003). I lost all of my email and webpage data and got fed up so I just abandoned the internet for the rest of the year. After I came back I managed to find a back-up of my trading page and uploaded it under a new account, but ultimately decided to stop trading at that point. Anyway, I still listen to my old dubs pretty regularly. I even did the unthinkable (for me) and actually transfered some favorite stuff to CDR recently.

I remember getting a handful of still sealed cassettes at my local thrift store for about 20cents or so a pop. I was downright pathetic how excited I got over the find.

This, certainly, a well cared for official pressed CD will likely outlast its owner and are generally far less fragile than both cassettes AND vinyl.

I looooove tapes. Definetly more durable than CD's, and I think they look cooler. I don't know why but rectangles seem to be more pleasing to my eyes than squares. My only beef with tapes is that you can't skip to certain songs. Most of the tapes I have are from grind/powerviolence bands

These three tapes are reason enough for me to consider collecting.

Let's see... As far as tapes go I have Megadeth's first 5 albums, Dio's first 5 and Helloween's first 3. I bought them because they were ridiculously cheap, and they play very well. I can't really notice any difference in quality between listening to them and a CD, but then again I'm not very observant.

As a child I used cassettes. Had some Maiden, Megadeth, Sepultura, Obituary and Anthrax tapes, but most of them sounds like shit by now. They got played alot. Then I switched to buying cd's and vinyl(mostly vinyl though).

I have a lot of tapes: well known bands like Megadeth, Rush, and Motorhead, some punk compilations, some 1980s pop like the Church, etc. Some of them sound really good, particularly the ones that were mastered in analog. I don't like tapes though, after playing them 100/200 times they really degrade, I would prefer CDs or vinyl.

A) That's not true, and B) Tapes often are just a clear, black or white tape with a band name and CD title written on it. CDs often have artwork and/or tracklists on them. By my reeckoning, your logic is flawed! :P

I think he was talking about the shape of the CD when it's in it's case.

I've seen some Cannibal Corpse wholesale cassette lots on ebay. They don't seem to be very elusive (unless the person selling them ran a shop or something and had kept them for years).

Tapes bear a certain aesthetic, that's why their so attractive. Technically much inferior to cd's or vinyl, but still just so lovely, especially for lo-fi music.

That said, I only buy/trade underground tapes. I prefer most music on CD/CDr for convenience since the only place I can really play tapes is in my room.

I don't like tapes anymore. They are a pain in the ass to get decent players for anymore. Also, I like to rip my music to my computer. Ripping tapes in a pain. Vinyl is pretty tough sometimes, but tapes are worse. For one, you need the right type of stereo, then you need the right connectors, then you need separate software to rip it. Then, if you want a decent rip, you need to download something along the lines of Audacity to take some of the static away and to split the tracks. (Otherwise, you just have Side A being a certain length, and Side B being a certain length, with no separate tracks)

I have not used a cassette tape in about 8 years at least. I did have fun back in the day making mix tapes and then before the MP3 player came around, making mix CD's.

A) CD's scratch really easily. B) I know what a fucking tape looks like dude, and In my opinion they look better. And I wasn't even talking about just the tape, I was talking about the whole package.

And again, I know what shape a CD is, I was talking about the packaging. Cheers.

I have at least 140 tapes scattered across my room. I love the fuckin' things. They are like peas though, no matter how hard I try, I can never seem to gather them all up in one bunch.. there are always strays somewhere and that stray is usually the one I am looking for.

I got about 7 tapes this summer from this distro in Quebec and I must say I prefer them over CD's. Not only are they relatively cheap (much cheaper than CD's), they have cooler inlays and a more authentic feel to them. Also, because I'm not sure how to convert them to a digital format it forces me to use my boom box and actually use the tapes themselves...

CD's scratch easily only if you aren't taking care of them, tapes on the other hand tend to degrade over time, and can be greatly damaged by so much as an old, dusty cassette deck that decides to eat it.

I sold my entire Manowar collection of cassette tapes. Some of them were mangled anyways.

I've got tons of death and black metal demo tapes but nothing worth mentioning (that I am aware of). Most of it all is in a giant box in my storage room. On my stereo shelf I have 6-8 that I more commonly listen to but again, nothing too special. I am more interested in my vinyl collection.

Tapes, and well done cd-r's, have far more 'spirit' than the CD's.
It's not a matter of sound quality, it's a matter of... compromise of the band, the product, with the owner/fan.
I'm not anti CD's but I agree some ones are so souless, so unexpresive (however others are some very good also)...

I'm most proud of the Corpse Vomit demos and the Graveland - Carpathian Wolves tape. I got that one 'cause I think they fagged up the cd reissues art. Same with the Conqueror tape. Also the Leviathan demo from Oaken Throne Magazine and the blue pro tape of the Insatanity/Immortal Suffering split. The ones I'm least proud of are the Mutilation demos and the Inquisition - Magnificent Glorification of Lucifer tape, both from No Colours 'cause they're just dubs and were expensive as fuck. I knew the Mutiilation tapes would be dubs but there's no reason the fucking Inquisition tape shouldn't have been pro.

Tapes are not more durable than CDs. Tapes can get stretched and are far more vulnerable to heat (definitely not good for the car environment). I grew up listening to vinyl and cassettes and I bought my last cassette back in 1990. At that time, I started collecting CDs and I was never disappointed. I can't imagine playing some of the albums that I own as much as I have on tape. For instance, before I bought Flotsam and Jetsam's No Place for Disgrace on CD in 1991, I owned it on tape THREE times. Stretched, warped, eaten, etc.

Don't get me wrong...tapes will always hold sort of a nostalgia element for me. I can remember walking down the street with listening to all the latest tunes with my cassette walkman and hanging out at a party and having to flip over the tape because that side was over. Still, they are nowhere near as durable as CDs.
