Yep that's right.....D&D. The trophy held high above the weak shoulders of the truly nerdy majority. It doesn't take long for a fan of metal to notice all the fantasy references and tolkien quotes and start to wonder how big of an impact this simple paper and pencil game has had on their precious music form. How many of you out there play the game or would at least admit many bands wouldn't be here if it weren't for D&D?(such as every power metal band) I'm a dungeon master for several groups and prefere the 1st and 3rd editions of the game.

Did you hear Dave Arneson died a few of days ago? Sorry to shit on your parade :(

But yeah I'm a fan for a long time. Haven't had the chance to play it in a few years though.

I really want to give this a try. A friend of mine has the game, and we've been meaning to play it for ages, but we just never seem to get around to it. It's funny; my mom thinks this game is evil and that I'll get addicted to it. Never mind my taste in music and movies as well as other video games, but she still swears up and down that D&D is evil.

Fuck, did he? And it's "Arneson", by-the-by :( :( :( R.I.P. to one of gaming's godfathers.

For myself, at 21 years of age, I've been playing Dungeons and Dragons for 10 years now, give or take. D&D has been a huge part of my life through this entire period; D&D is what initially got me interested in history, which (along with a fantastic highschool teacher of mine) got me interested in culture, which has led to my choice of getting into the field of human geography in university, so my interest in the themes in the game have evolved into something much bigger than a simple RPG with funny dice :P

Currently, I am likely (after a 6 month or so complete cut-off of the game due to my band becoming a more important aspect in my life) starting up a metalhead gaming group with one of the guitarists from my band, my good (female) friend who's dating the drummer from my band plus 2 or 3 more people I have shortlisted who wouldn't mind death or black metal blasting out while we slay some orcs or somesuch :p

So yes, huge gamer here, though I haven't touched a D&D book in 6 months (which seems like an aeon).

Oh, and also: if anyone here loves D&D, I can't recommend the EN World forums enough to you; it's the second largest community of D&Ders behind the Wizards site itself, and it's a million times better. I go by the same username there as here, although I haven't been active in quite some time.

Definitely give it a shot! Let me guess though, you're younger than 18 and your mom has read all about the crazy, hyper-sensitive shit that happened back in the 80s?

I never really played that much but over the years I have poured quite a bit of money into all the source books that deal in the lore and background of the monsters, religions, customs, lands, etc.

Some of them are almost like mini fantasy novels and are quite fun to read.

I've been playing for about three years know and it consumed a large part of my life. I was introduced to it by my middle school drama teacher (who was fired for smoking pot  ). but we played one of the newer versions. but then I found out that my dad had the advance D&D books from the seventies. I read them all a trained myself to become a Dungeon Master. And I think the best class is either a Cleric, or a Paladin.

When I was 9 or 10 this older kid (high school, I guess) down the street tried to get a group going with the kids in the neighborhood, which were, of course, all younger kids. I remember being a half-orc, getting some sort of fire staff, and killing some elementals. I had no clue what was going on at the time though, and the older kid (the DM, obviously) held my hand through the whole process. We only played for a few hours. The same kid also tried to get me to play Magic: The Gathering with him once and I lost in about 40 seconds with no clue what I was doing.

My only exposure to D&D since then were some nerds on my floor in college who set up every night to play Star Wars D&D. That just seemed a little over the top nerdy.

My kids occasionally play already. Runequest 2nd edition, from almost a quarter of a century ago, not any wussy D20 system.

The 9-year old killed a pretty big monster with a lance, using her pony's damage bonus. I was so proud I almost wept a bit. The 7-year old is a good negotiator.

I'm an ancient gamer myself, and up to until 6 years ago we held regular sessions with friends. Families stopped that, so maybe we'll get it going again when they grow up. I have this magnificient idea for a mini campaign involving a small group of people, the only 30 or so among a million awake and not frozen, in a generation ship half-way to Alpha Centauri.

I haven't played in years, but I absolutely love Wayne Andrew Reynolds' (or just good ol' WAR) artwork still. His style is such a treat.

I never got a chance to play very much until I got to college. Now, though, I'm an enthusiastic supporter. I'm currently playing a campaign set in the early eighteenth century as a Spanish former pirate acting as a trading agent for the British. It's a lot of fun playing as a barbarian, by the way. Also, since magic has been significantly weakened for our (somewhat) more realistic campaign, barbarians are a pretty good choice.

My group uses the 3.5 handbook. Actually, once I can track down a rulebook for myself, I'm planning on DMing for a campaign set during the Crusades.

Wow, that's weird, I just started to play last weekend, Kind of a strange coincidence that there'd be a thread on it! Haha.

Anyway, Yeah, I played my first game last Saturday, and let me say: WOW, I knew it would be either retarded or amazingly fun, and it was AWESOME, I wasnt taking too seriously, and I played with a bunch of friends. For example, I was a human Paladin who came from Brooklyn, and I was black, so I needed a hand crossbow to serve as my glock, and since my DM was like... my best friend, he gave me extra XP for getting into it so much as to say "I pause for a minute, and remember my parrot back home, who I could not afford to bring on this journey and shed a single tear."

Oh, and my party was "Brosef Stalin and the Bro Patrol"

So much fun, had a great time.

D&D IS FUCKING AWESOME!
I've played it for six years now and still love it. 3.5 edition is the best.
What's everyone's favorite class?
Mine is maybe the cleric.

Yep, I've played D&D amongst countless other nerdy, nerdy games. Lately, however, I've grown more attached to the New World of Darkness games, due to their greater emphasis on mood and storytelling.

I guess the D&D movie was very hated by fans of the game. I never played the game or know much about how it is but I saw it 7 or 8 years ago and I sensed that it had nothing really to do with the game series. It looked like a cheap production too. Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans in a D&D movie? Getta outta here..

I've heard that is fairly interesting, and more focused on roleplaying and character development, which I like a lot.
My personal favorite roleplaying game is GURPS. It's a very flexible system.

It is very good, and I must say I'm in the camp that thinks NWoD is far superior to the old version.

The actual rules are very simple when compared to DnD, and the game is played with a much greater focus on story. When I was recently asked to join a DnD game, I sat down to make my character and came to the realization that I was bored of the class system.

I've always wanted to play... I grew up in the 80's when the game reigned supreme, but I live in a really rural area and could never find enough nerds to play. When I was 20 or so my cousin married an ex-Army dude that got hooked on the game in the service and he my cousin and I were going to start playing, but they divorced.

Back in my freshman year of high school, first time playing the game. The entire party was having its collective ass handed to it by some giant T-rex-esque thing, and we weren't far from wiping. There was no clear way to do any damage to it, so I decided what the hell, I'll have some fun and just hurl my sword at it.

Turns out that was the secret to beating it, as its vulnerability was inside its mouth. What ensued from this was a chorus of nerdly cheers from my party members, pats on the back, and promises to invite me to every D&D event from here on out. It totally made up for never getting laid.

I played once, with a group of co-workers...got our asses handed to us by an army of gnomes and their mechanical dragons. Needless to say I have been intimidated since to play again. There's so much you have to remember and I felt like I was annoying the other players by constantly asking questions.

I started the same way. It is a lot to remember, but once you get a hold of it, it makes perfect sense.

Hahahah, yeah... I remember my cousin giving me his first edition rule book and trying to remember everything, which pissed me off. What pissed me off more was the rulebook kept saying "Now remember, this is easy stuff, it's not that hard to figure out or remember" over and over again.

The last time I played D&D was when me and my friends tried out 4th edition and it was terrible. It's like they tried to turn it into WoW with all the special moves and whatnot :ugh:

My favorite character I had was a CE claustrophobic wizard who would constantly cast fireball in close quarters with his party.

Best campaign I ever DMed was when one of the PC's tried to block a 25 foot tall iron golem from punching him off of a tower with a Staff of Power and leveling the top three floors and killing everyone but one person who had to use 3 wishes to bring everyone else back instead of using them to destroy a very powerful artifact.

That party also kidnapped a prince and tried to get away with a flying carpet only to have to destroyed mid air and the cleric used the prince's body to break his fall.

That was a fun campaign.

I got the core rulebooks for the most recent edition last fall at my friends urging but the campaign never really got off of the ground (political intrigue/boredom based campaign obsessed DM does not mesh with I LIEK COMBAT GUYZ! dota fanboy...forcing myself and everyone else to basically form up in opposing camps on either side)

I do have a complete set of the arabian nights expansion of MTG cards though as well as dark eldar, eldar, space marine, tyranid, and catachan IG Warhammer 40k armies and imperial and beasts of chaos armies for warhammer fantasy so my nerd cred is pretty intact without needing to play dnd.

I disagree that new WoD is better than the old one altough they improved some stuff a little bit when it comes to Werewolf. On the other hand the new Mage sucks horrendously. Right now I'm running a Vampire: The Masquerade with some friends. I designed all the background for the city of Paris and the game is developing in a great way. I took me a lot of time to create all the NPCs and stuff but it was worth the time.
