Anybody here tried out Team Fortress 2's Mann vs. Machine co-op mode? Imo it's pretty fun and sometimes quite challenging, I just don't like the 10 minute queue times.

I finally caught a snippet of the latest X-COM. I can't say I'm disappointed, but I'm not overly excited either. It looks like the combat system allows for a slew of useful tactics that I haven't seen in other X-com games/mimics. Soldier specialisation and skills are also welcome features. The graphics aren't too bad, as long as it's not a resource hog then I'd be happy playing it. Haven't seen what multiplayer is like.

Some complaints: a maximum squad size of 6? Bullshit. I want 18 motherfuckers, 4 tanks, and an all-out war against mutons... Seriously, 6 is way too few. How would that work in base defense?
Also, and that's maybe because I haven't played it yet, but the defining element of early X-COM games, i.e. atmosphere, seems to be quite lacking. From what I've heard, the music is mostly action-y and very stock-sounding, like you could throw it in any B action film and it would fit. This is as opposed to the original's brooding bom bom bom bom bom bom... Not much for music, but hey at least it conveyed a sense of dread and terror, which IMO is part of what makes X-com stand out among other turn-based combat games. Aliens didn't look intimidating either.

Quote:
The initial mission phase of disembarking from the transport has been removed.

aarrghhhh WHY? Ship disembarkment was one of the most intense parts of the battlescape. Having good disembarkment tactics was something critical for maximizing survivability of the crew in the first few turns. What they could've done is make a ship upgrade available that enables it to auto-launch a couple of smoke grenades at the start, instead of eliminating it altogether.

Yeah, Dragunov pointed it out earlier that the squad is limited to six at max (you start with four and then upgrade), but maybe it is a balancing thing - judging by snippets of previews it seems that your team mates tend to have more health than the aliens, so it's less likely to see a team mate with super armor yet still downed in a single shot like in the original. As for the music - I wouldn't call it "stock-y", but it certainly join the fad of Deus Ex H.R.-ish "sci-fi" music. Which isn't a bad thing, but I do second you on the notion of the shortage of bom bom boms. Hell, the music basically did half of the job in crafting the tense atmosphere in the original for me.

Pretty decent videogame haul today.

Yakuza 3, Soul Calibur 5, Uncharted 2 and Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD all for PS3, and Bioshock for xbox 360. I really need to stop buying games, because I'm still hooked on boarderlands two, need to keep playing Fallout 3, haven't even started Dragon Age: Origins. I may make an exception for Sleeping Dogs and Dishonored. And I've already pre-ordered Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Seriously, I need to chill out.

Yakuza 3 is great. Yakuza 4 is cool too, but I haven't finished it yet. The fifth one is looking amazing, hopefully it get's localized.

Yeah I hear good things about those games, they look cool. Sound a lot better than Shemnue from what my friend has told me.

That's not really a fair comparison since Shenmue came out so long ago. I'm one of that game's rabid supporters, and really hope the rumors of an HD rerelease are true. The reason I was interested in Yakuza in the first place is because of the whole "spiritual successor to Shenmue" thing it has going on.

Never played any SUIKODEN games or SHADOW HEARTS either for that matter! I guess I'm in for a treat. I buy games as they pass my notice.

I work in a pawn shop so I can get brand new $59.99 games that just came out for $20. Use that scale to determine what I pay for games worth less or more; couple it with the fact that I never pay "collectable" prices and you end up drawing the conclusion that I must have stacks and stacks of games I haven't touched yet which is true. I find that you have to grab them when you see them though, because if you pass them up it may be quite some time before they roll through again. I was doing the peepee dance for PAPER MARIO on GC for almost two months.

I think my next purchases may be X-COM and Dishonored (getting huge Thief vibes from those previews), though I need to get around to playing Demon's Souls before I decide to start something else...but it'll take an act of god to get me to take NHL 13 out of my Playstation! And the previous talk of Suikoden V gave me a strong case of nostalgia, I remember having a lot of fun with the first three, I may grab it if I can find it at local store.

Dabbled around on my SNES yesterday and played Primal Rage...this game is definitely not as fun as it was years ago...

I started a new game in Ocarina of Time on an emulator. There's a glitch in Kaikaro Village where one of the chickens is trapped in an unbreakable box! :grr:

That would be correct! I remember renting it for weeks on end when I was younger before finally getting it as a birthday gift. Flash forward to now... :puke:

Yeah it's okay. I've only played the advanced mode three times so far, and it was always with friends so it was still pretty easy but still fun. I'm not really that fond of the normal mode though. Playing with friends, it's way too easy. On the other hand, half the time I've played on random servers I haven't really been too fond of my team. Either we'd have three scouts, a medic using the kritzkrieg would refuse to give krits before the start of the round to lay stickies, or an important player would leave towards the end of a game we were doing well in.

I may be the only one here to say this, but after playing Borderlands 2 by myself, and with friends I am 1) not nearly as entertained by it as BL1, despite its extra polish, 2) Disappointed that the looting system isn't better than what it is when you have 2 or more people playing. I don't like that I can unlock something and one of my friends can loot it. 3) I dont like the changes they made to the vehicle controls, having X for getting into the car and B to get out makes little sense, especially since they had it right on the first one.

Overall I still really enjoy, just a few things that have bugged me.

Should I pay $10 for Final Fantasy 7? I never played it, and I'm wondering if it's aged well for people that will have no nostalgia factor.

Yea, it can be hard to get the good items in multiplayer. Just don't bother checking to see what shit is before you pick it up, always keep at least 3 inventory slots open (I have like 7 now that I've got guns good enough for me not to have to worry so much about elemental damage), sprint to the loot, pick it up, then see if its worth keeping. Or you could open the chest than quickly switch to "offline" if you're the host. That seems like an even bigger dick move though.

I'm playing with a friend and he's constantly grabbing everything before I have a chance to look at it :grumble: Well, now that I'm doing the same our arsenal is more or less balanced and we're of course sharing what we don't need. Great game overall, they really improved the concept while not even greatly changing anything.

Oh and THE SLOT MACHINES EAT YOUR SOUL! (Actually they are the only good way to get rid of all the money)

I finished Arkham Asylum. The game is addictive at hell - combining so many different gameplay mechanisms in one game shouldn't work but it does and it doesn't get boring a single moment. Oh and combat is far from being a brainless button smasher... the catch is that during the more challenging parts you get thrown into a chaotic situation and need to get it under control by reacting accordingly to different types of enemies but also get a feeling for the dynamic of the individual fight and adapt to it to maximize efficiency or something like that...

Downside: Most of the characters were kind of ridiculous and naively written, but that's the fault of DC (it's the kind of bullshit DC and Marvel regularly produce when they try to adress serious topics). The narrative on the other hand was entertaining and faceted. I especially liked the parts with Scarecrow, though they could have done more with them.

Not the final area, nope. You've seen nothing yet. The final stretch is insane.

Finally beat it. And oh man you weren't kidding. It does go a bit longer than what I thought was the end of the game.

The first landmark of the final area......was just............that moment when you realize where exactly you are........is too crazy. :o

The last boss felt like a last boss. Very tough. I had to keep switching combinations of team members and skills till I found the one that worked for me.

NG+ is a huge pain. Why can't it just carry all your stuff over? No they have to make you pick 30 of each item and 60 materials you want to carry over. That has nothing to do with any challenge. It just gives you busy work sorting through your items. You already have the advantage of being OP by level and skills.

The ending was adequate. I mean I was hoping for more, but it was a good ending.

Overall I like Xenoblade. It is a story of Shulk and his friends going on an adventure. And it's also a story about the world itself. It's a story about the Bionis and Mechonis. It's a story about the origins of both. And it's also a story about...........well the final level when you begin to realize where you're at gives that part away.

It was a game with a large scope and ambition and I think it turned out well. You don't see many games like this come along and I really enjoyed it.

It's pretty interesting how many of the new features in GTA 4 (the minigames, the phone, the dating simulation sidequests) came from Yakuza. Even though most people hated that stuff and thought it was pointless.

Yeah dude... yeah. Chills.

Spoiler: show
The Egil stuff was quite a peak for me, completely loved all that stuff. The final stretch (Heart of Bionis aside) was so awesome though, and yeah that last boss felt like a last boss alright.

I also can't put into words how brilliant the music for Agniratha was. It completely set the tone and spoke volumes. You traverse an entire world plowing through armies to extract revenge and suddenly realize, you're the enemy? I had to put the controller down when I got there and let that sink in.

I just got a new iMac yesterday (wooo!), so now I can finally play Diablo 3. I played through the first Act on my old computer, but it was so laggy that it eventually became unplayable. My disappointment with the game has cooled a lot by now, so I'm just enjoying it for what it is.

Just as excitingly to me, StarCraft 2 can run on ultra settings on this computer. I could only just play it on the very lowest settings before, so this is kind of a revelation.

I've also reinstalled World of WarCraft and am looking forward to seeing how that runs. Never been all that into WoW, as I found it sort of tedious, but nevertheless I'm eager to try it again.

I'll probably install Windows on this bad boy so I can play some of my old favorite games, like Icewind Dale. Hoping it works as well as I'm imagining it will.

Got my copy of Resident Evil 6 on friday, today i tried it first time and finished first chapter in Leon's campaign. Its a little too early to say much but i'm not really impressed yet. Its really action oriented and fast paced, so gameplay got really chaotic in some parts, and because the game is really dark, it didn't make aiming any easier. Many zombies coming everywhere at the same time, kinda reminded me of Left For Dead with worse controls. I hope it gets better, and these words are coming from a fan who loves RE5 (and all the others of course).

After my ps3 recently decided to not read games anymore, I went out and purchased a 360. And honestly, Im surprised at how nice it is on the other side of the fence lol. Ive since had to start a new game in Dark Souls after rebuying it, and the anticipation for the DLC is killing me. Ive even surprised myself by reaching Anor Londo in under 7 hours as opposed to my first playthrough that took me 60+ hours to complete. Ive also been playing some coop in both Dark Souls and Borderlands 2 with my roommate, and Im really surprised at how good BL2 turned out to be considering that I really disliked the first game.

It's more fun if you find a private server that has the extreme mod turned on. You get way more money for upgrades to the point where it's easily possible to buy every single upgrade for your loadout by the last wave, but the difficulty is cranked to the max so you absolutely need them when those giant rapid-fire critmissile super-fast soldiers show up.

Its funny, I always play with someone who is much more junior to me at work, and I always give him shit about stealing the loot, and he always apologizes, and then sure enough the next time we play he steals all the good stuff even though I am level 17 and he something like 33.

And I have switched offline once just to boot everyone else because I found a rocket launcher that was something like 2500x2 damage. Its crazy good, one well placed shot can take out quite a large group of enemies, or a sizable chunk out of a boss.

I just got past the part were you learn about Angel. Kind of blew my mind. I wasn't expecting that at all. I always thought she was Cortana-like and loyal to a tee.

Yes and no. You get some extraordinary cool items (Auriel's Bow and Auriel's Shield), but after you've finished the main quest things get quite stale. There isn't much to do and all the plug-in quests can be finished in a few hours. I, however, love the gritty voices of the Dumner, and I've recently had an urge to buy Morrowind again.

I've enjoyed Dawnguard, but Gunther is very correct about the game then going on as usual. Being a vampire rules, but only after bug fixes. As it is, it gets annoying being weaker in the sunlight and all. The missions are decent, and the climax is quite long but also was pretty fun the first time. I wouldn't pay $20 if I were you though, so wait until it gets down to $10.

One other thing, Serana rules. So adaptable in a fight and mods out there make her look and play better. Best companion in the game.

That's what I'm worried about, specially because the price doubles for me because of exchange rates. I'm not paying 40R$ for a fucking dlc

If you're not a fan of the series (1-9) or JRPGs in general, it's a tough call. Then again, 10$ really isn't much, so you could be pleasantly surprised.

Now that my tastes have matured, I've revisited many games I grew up on, and the FF series hasn't aged totally well, but I found the real reasons why I liked it so much to begin with. The gameplay is, frankly, dull. However, the music, settings, and stories, and general design of the games I still find fascinating.

Anyone else finish/love Sword and Sworcery?

Yup. Very weird and stylish, can't say I loved it though. It was fun while it lasted, but there's nothing there that makes me contemplate playing it again.

Considering the main story can take upwards of 35 hours, for $10 you're getting a whole lot of game for your dollar.

I will never for the life of me understand this line of thinking.

?

I like JRPGs but have limited experience with them. Skies of Arcadia is BOSS. Lost Odyssey was cool but I stopped once I got to the second disk. Not because it was bad, I just bought some more games. In fact so far the only current gen game I've beaten is Assassin's Creed. Getting these consoles 7 years into their cycle greatly facilitates gamer ADD, when about 5 years worth of GOTY titles can be bought used for less than $20.

Anyone else excited for the release of Pokemon Black and White 2? I thought the Black and White one were great, the pokemon could have been better but whatever the game was fun.

Also I have heard rumors of nintendo remaking The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the Wii U does anyone know if this is true and if so is there an article I can be linked to?

It's a quantity thing, not quality. Some people want to have them both in their games. Can't say I blame them.
(And by the way, if you're into free flash games on adultswim you should totally check out Death Vegas)
