If the movie had decent actors that could have actually worked. But alas, just ended up being melodramatic filler.

Yeah, you could definitely tell that's what it was influenced by and really the only redeeming factor of the film. I also Watched Brother From Another Planet recently, now that was awesome.
Spoiler: show
That one scene when the brother meets the voodoo witchdoctor late at night in The Bronx or where ever ruled. Same when the two yuppies go into the bar

OK, I guess what I mean is this: it wasn't exactly a good movie, but it was a memorable one. If that makes sense. I still liked it either way.

Hobo with a Shotgun was awesome. It was incredibly tasteless and lewd and gory, but those factors helped drive its point home. It wasn't very subtle at all, but it really worked and left an impact, so I can say I liked it. It's a weird movie because you're not really sure if it's good when you're sitting there watching it - but for me personally, by the end I came out pretty satisfied, and even though it was really harsh and unpleasant, it did have a very quantifiable effect. It was about a guy standing up against wrongs in his city. If it had a different name, and was presented a little less over the top, it probably would've been taken quite seriously. But it was one of those movies that sort of played with expectations by blending silly B-grade shlock with a pretty serious undertone at other parts - so it probably alienated a lot of people because of that.

I think a lot of people who don't like this just don't "get" it, or are just unfamiliar with anything other than run of the mill modern action films, or something. It's clearly a (pretty enjoyable, and fun) homage to the exploitation films of the past and Troma in particular. I dug it.

DeathRiderDoom wrote:
Part of the awful Tarantino "Grindhouse" project and a modern "exploitation" flick didn't exactly set me up to be super-confident going into this one, but i was pleasantly surprised, if not knocked off my feet by this one. Essentially this film is an homage to the exploitation flicks of the 80s, but goes beyond being a nod to Troma, and becomes a full-fledged mashup of Strret Trash, mixed with Toxic Avenger, mixed with Class of Nukem High - elements from all these 3 major Troma films are present.

Probably one of the best if not THE best modern "exploitation" type film, Hobo With a Shotgun is a faithful homage for long time buffs, and should entertain modern audiences. Everything from the original, hardcore gross out gore ideas (Using a minced up, shotgun-shelled-to-pieces corpse as a hiding place is one example), wicked retro style color and lighting jobs, sythy 80s music soundtrack, Hauer's kickass tough-guy dialogue and Bronson-ish behavior, and the cast of familiar Canadian faces (for those of us who watch trailer park boys) make this a winning flick for the modern age. I was expecting to see a fumbling, half asses disingenuous attempt to ironically reference the classic genre, but what i good was a strong example from it, lead by an always impressive Hauer. Great..

Saying you "don't get" Hobo With A Shotgun is just being down right pretentious.

RIP John Ritter. I really liked his roles in It and Stay Tuned.
He was just immensely convincing, no matter the movie.

Yeah Ritter was good in that. Bad Santa's one of those sweet, decade or so old comedies that's always an enjoyable watch on a sunday afternoon or something. Speaking of those types of films, watched BASEketball again for the first time in ages - still really funny, and just a really fun film. A few other ones from that era that are top notch like Big Lebowski, Dumb & Dumber, Zoolander, etc. Fun classics.

That's because The Big Lebowski IS the greatest film ever made.

Is this your homework, Larry?

Actually 15 of us went bowling recently for a friend's birthday, and it was fantastic. I'm awful though. That was maybe the 5th time i've ever been :\ There are several places here but this one was awesome and very cheap. Bonus points for the eccentric, hilarious aged Chinese manager who insulted our party with an onslaught of gay and dick jokes. My jimmies were rustled.

The Big Lebowski is easily one of my top 10 movies of all time. That comment about it being a way of life isn't far off. One of the most memorable nights of the year was watching it while drinking rum at a friend's party earlier this year - not exactly White Russians but eh, it worked out.

I enjoyed Hobo thoroughly and DRD's evaluation of the film was pretty well in line with my thoughts on it. I wouldn't say people that don't like it "don't get it" so much as I'd say that kind of film is intended for a pretty niche market and regardless of whether people like a lot of gore and bad taste in their films you kind of have to be into all of the elements of those types of films in order to enjoy it. It's definitely a perfect example of a type of film that most people will either love or hate.

Also, this.

I enjoyed the hell out of Hobo With A Shotgun. Some of the dialoge was perfectly cheesey and Hauer's deilvery was awesome.

Hobo: "It's all I know!"

OK, saw the Amazing Spider-Man. Good not great. I liked the Peter Parker portrayal better in this one. I'm still extremely surprised Sony just went ahead and rebooted the whole franchise altogether especially since the first one was already astoundingly successful ten years removed and only a few years removed from the equally successful third sequel. Not to mention that it had to compete with an already saturated franchise blockbuster lineup at the box office i.e. Avengers, Dark Knight Rising and Harry Potter. A risky proposition from a financial standpoint but I guess the studio had money to burn. But yeah it was a good movie to go see.

It had a couple of good one liners, but as an overall movie it was pretty bad. That one scene in Drake's warehouse where

Hobo With a Shotgun was truer to the Batman ideals than the last Batman movie was. There's some food for thought.

I watched The Wrestler today. It was good I guess? i can't put my thoughts together right now
it was interesting look at a self-destructive fuck up past his glory days, some pretty visceral fight scenes and good acting from the ugly dude whose name i forgot, and i actually felt some sympathy for Randy, which is a rare thing in this kind of movie, but i think it was melodramatic at some points
i liked that part where slices his finger and quit his job

I've only seen bits and pieces of Hot Rod and what I could piece together is that the movie is incredibly stupid, but I laughed a lot. Normally this kind of thing fails hard but Hot Rod just frickin' works and I have no idea why.

While I think it's a good film and own a copy myself, I wouldn't give it a 5 out of 5.
The aggressive footloose inspired dance in the forest and cool beans scenes alone solidify it as a true work of art.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid: A comedic take on film noir with clips from a lot of classics spliced into the film to form a... cohesive whole. Well, as cohesive as film noirs tend to be remembering the likes of The Big Sleep. Steve Martin is the private dick while Rachel Ward is the femme fatale and they have a lot of chemistry even if a lot of it is played for laughs. Like a lot of comedies, the story and themes are sidelined for laughs, but well, the laughs are numerous and some are absolutely hilarious so it is forgiven. Definitely worth a watch. While the movies is from 1982, the jokes haven't dated one bit, which is really surprising.

Let's Go to Prison: Watched from the corner of an eye for one reason or another. A full-blown, modern comedy about prison so don't drop the soap and watch out for the big black gay guy. So yeah... Not much fun really. While I don't like Arrested Development or that kind of humor, I must admit Will Arnett can really deliver that kind of stuff as he does on this film. Dax Shepard on the other hand should never be allowed to act. But yes, the humor is really cheap and well, the prison jokes are all the same old, same old.

Jerichow: A German film on an outcast of society (a dishonorably discharged soldier) who befriends a rich Turk with an impoverished, German criminal for a wife. It's a drama with a love triangle between three damaged people. The soldier can't grasp the hold of a normal life after coming back from the war, sleeping on a mattress on the living room floor on his family's old home, not really touching anything. The Turk owns a chain of restaurants, but doesn't trust any of his workers, or his wife. He has lived his whole life in Germany and yet feels - perhaps rightly so - that he isn't wanted there and wants to move back to Turkey, where his brother runs their family farm. Though the Turk has to send him a whole lot of money every month to support it. The Turk's criminal wife owes over a hundred thousand euros to the government and agreed to the marriage just for the money. Damaged people without trust or loyalty.

Auf der anderen Seite or The Edge of Heaven: An intertwining story of the deaths of two women: One a Turkish immigrant who has turned to prostitution, but takes up the offer of another Turkish immigrant to move in with him. The other a German woman who falls in love with a Turkish illegal alien. The illegal alien is the daughter of the prostitute so it all kinda plays out rather nicely, but that's beside the point. The story is more about the people surrounding the deaths of the two woman: A father and son in the former, the German woman's mother and the illegal alien in the latter. The people and their forgiveness. From one to the other, but also from the other to him/herself, for they are responsible for the deaths even if it isn't intentional. Forgiving oneself for causing the death of a loved one.

I don't know about not liking it, but I don't hold it to such great esteems as people tend to do. It's a fun romp, sure, that provides some laughs and it is well directed, but that's about it. It doesn't even begin to hold a candle to the better films by the Coens such as Barton Fink or The Man Who Wasn't There.

^ Good call on That Steve Martin pic. I remember it being good as. Noir fan, Steve Martin fan and all.

Re: Big Lebowski: come on dude i don't think people are holding BL in the same space as the Coens' more serious pieces. Though BL is a very sleek, multi-tiered comedy with brilliant production values, acting and writing, I think if any longtime Coen aficionado were to show a film of theirs in conjunction with an in-depth analysis on why it's artistically brilliant in a stack of ways, it'd be Barton Fink or something along those lines. Actually, to be quite bold I'd say that Barton Fink is the "best" film they've done. Considering I like their entire catalogue including Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers (but especially Blood Simple, BAR, Fargo, Barton Fink, Hudsucker, BL), i'd say that's a pretty strong reflection on that film.

Re: Hot Rod: actually enjoy this film. One of the better 2000s comedies (can't think of more than 2-3 other ones even worth a damn). Good soundtrack, explored some very familiar and oft'-trodden (though also very relatable) issues, some really original vibes, and ideas as well though. I recall expecting to hate it before seeing it, but watched it just as it came out and found it pretty tolerable.
