On top of being a Metalhead I am a big fan Goth Rock, some of my favorite goth/proto goth bands are Fields of the Nephilim, Nosferatu (their second album has some Power Metal vibes imo), Diary of Dreams, 45 Graves, Sisters of Mercy, The Birthday Party, Joy Divison, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees ect. Anyone else a fan of this kind of music? What are some of your favorite goth bands?

I've always liked these genres, but I've got more into them lately.
My favorite goth bands are Marilyn Manson, HIM, and Asking Alexandria lol xd :3

Spoiler: show
Just kidding.
My favorite goth bands are The Cure, The Damned, and The Sisters of Mercy. Joy Division are pretty killer as well, and finding someone who likes Nosferatu is pretty cool as well.
Concerning darkwave, I haven't gotten much past Clan of Xymox which are really good.

The Dammed, The Cure, and Clan of Xymox are also great, also going to add Killing Joke. Honestly as far as Darkwave goes, I only know Clan of Xymox, Diary of Dreams, and The Frozen Autumn so far. You got me laughing at calling Marilyn Manson and Him goth.

Post-punk is easily one of my favourite genres and I apologize in advance for the rant. . . The very early stuff that helped get the genre off the ground is well-worth looking into. Marquee Moon by television really helped get atmospheric non-riffed based experimentation going in punk. I'm not sure if The Idiot by Iggy Pop is widely considered post-punk, but it was instrumental on the development of the genre. It's not hard to see how the dark brooding atmosphere on songs like "Mass Production" would go on to inspire Joy Division and the like (Ian Curtis had The Idiot spinning on the turn table when he hung himself). Public Image Ltd. at their best are just as good as the Pistols imo and Metal Box/Second edition is a classic of the style.

From the start post-punk never really had as much of an easy sound to pin down as punk proper. First we've got the darker, more atmospheric and keyboard-laden stuff that followed Joy Division (Unknown Pleasures is the post-punk G.O.A.T. as far as I'm concerned). Killing Joke is a great example of this, having a dark atmosphere, near-metallic riffs and brooding keyboards. Their debut is one of the all-time classics of the genre. Death in June's debut is really underrated as a post-punk classic, but it's one of the best the genre has to offer as far as I'm concerned. It borrows heavily from Joy Division (including the WWII aesthetic), has lots of great bass lines, awesome tom-driven drums and some really cool trumpet parts. The Fall retained the brooding Manchester sound of Joy Division while going off on lots of different experimental tangents.

The influence of black music on post-punk was huge. Reggae and funk were massive influences for the bass-driven sound, with dub often being heavily interwoven into the keyboard parts and the way the bands started using a "studio as an instrument" approach. Lots of bands were driven by funky bass lines and jagged guitar, with Gang of Four's Entertainment! perhaps being the best example of this and easily one of the greatest albums in the movement. The Slits (basically a band of The Clash's girlfriends) were pretty interesting, an early part of the post-punk scene and essentially being a full on hybrid with reggae and dub.

You've also got more arty rock-based bands like Orange Juice, Magazine and Wire which essentially paved the way for the indie rock scene of the 90s, with bands like Modest Mouse and Built to Spill owing a lot to them.

The scene where post-punk started turning into goth rock is so fucking cool. The Cure were great in their post-punk/goth stage. They kept the tom-tom drumming and bass driven sound of post-punk and turned the ghastly atmosphere up to 11. Pornography is perhaps the best album of this stage in post-punk. Siouxsie and the Banshees similarly brought in a darker atmosphere and a more gothic atmosphere. Kaleidoscope and Juju are both amazing. Bauhaus are generally considered to be the first goth rock band, essentially jump starting the style with their "Bela Lugosi's Dead" single. Their first album is dope.

As for other loose ends, I highly recommend checking out The Sound's debut album. It maintains the aesthetic of classic punk more than most, has great songwriting and killer bass lines. While The Raincoats' debut is more known for being a post-punk classic, I think it's their sophomore where they start getting really interesting. I don't even know what to call it, it's more smooth, lush and experimental and features lots of exotic instruments. The Birthday Party are fucking insane. They kind of occupy that space where post-punk started turning into goth rock, but I'm not sure they're a band that can be labeled. They're insanely abrasive and incorporate all this weird noisy shit. K.U.K.L. is an old Bjork band and very much in the same vein.

As for goth rock proper I'm a bit less knowledgeable but the style still has a few of my favourite albums. Sisters of Mercy is THE quintessential goth band to me. The first album cements the goth rock style, the second takes it to new heights and the third merges it with riff-rock surprisingly well. Fields of the Nephelim are great and Elyzium is just fucking insane - they essentially fuse the goth rock sound with classic-era Pink Floyd's psychedelic sonic exploration. Not too familiar with the deathrock style, but Christian Death's debut is a fucking banger. The Damned going goth rock with Phantasmagoria was pretty damn cool.

As for darkwave, don't know shit about that.

Those genres are one of those real hit or miss with me., so I cannot say definitively that I LOVE goth rock or darkwave, etc. I do, however, really dig Bauhaus, Joy Division, and Sisters of Mercy, and bands that sound like them or are influenced by them. But I never liked the Cure- the music is decent but the vocals, yeech!- and never really got into post-Rozz Williams Christian Death either (too theatrical and/or cheesy, and its really a whole different band since all the original members left.) I am always seeking new bands of that style though.

Here is an example: Great fucking band here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsJ2bx8xsXY

Or the Chicago band, Cemetery: just, excellent goth/punk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5a2QbIgI4Jo

The ex-members of VON put together a goth rock band called Sixx that is, ironically, better than VON (at least in my opinion)
I'm too lazy to link to it but it's out there.

the first album by dead can dance called dead can dance fit in the with the darkwave, post-punk label. With albums after this one, they dropped traditional rock instruments but this one is mostly guitars, drum and bass. It is really good. Really dark and oppressive but at the same time full of light and ethereal. They have to singers. A man and a woman.

Cocteau twins are an other band that I like. At the beginning, their music was really dark but at time pass on they went softer and softer. They are amongst the pionners of dream pop.

the bassline is really proeminant, they have repetitive sincopped beats with a drum machine and their guitars are full of distortions and other effects.

Star Industry!

Great band. I also dig Miazma. I remember downloading their album Shattered from their website at some point, they have entire albums for free apparently

http://www.miazma.se/the-music/
Or Bandcamp (Shattered isn't listed though):

Haven't checked out the others, I should get on that...

I'm a sucker for catchy basslines (Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus), etcetera. Recommend me songs with the catchies basslines, please!

This is a fantastic thread. Big big fan of Bauhaus, Sisters, and Siouxie Sioux.

Juju is hands down my favorite album of all time- including metal. The guitars are phenomenal.

The Leviathan cover of "Head Cut" is alright.

His cover of "Man With X-Ray Eyes" is solid.

Anyone here ever get into Sex Gang Children?

very hard to compare these two in terms of quality, in my book both bands are outstanding. still, if you know VON, you can hear that it's these guys behind sixx.

I do love me some post punk/goth rock though I'm still making my way through some of the essentials. The Sisters of Mercy is my favorite but I do love me some Joy Division and The Cure among others. One recent find that I've been enjoying is the debut album by Weathered Statues. I've only listened to it through promo as it's not out until next month, but it's one of the rare modern bands I've heard that's really good at hitting that early 80s Joy Division style.

Arcana is really high quality darkwave/neo-ambient stuff. How on earth they are featured on the metal archives I will never know, but they are.
