Well, as some (including myself) predicted, this would be a really unique and diverse list. Sadly, not as many people participated as I'd hoped. Very few titles were listed more than once on anyone's list, so there isn't much data to analyze. I believe only 25 people participated (including myself) which resulted in 108 unique titles. Only 11 titles were mentioned more than once. I may try to do one again next year and see what happens. Here are the results.

Points system was fairly simple:
1= 5 points
2= 4 points
3= 3 points
4= 2 points
5= 1 point

At least there were enough votes to have some clear winners.

Didn't even think of putting Dusk in Us on my list, I always lump Converge and other heavy hardcore/metalcore acts into my metal lists.

This was the top 5 list I submitted to be in compliance with the rules of the poll:

Spoiler: show
1. St. Vincent-Masseduction
2. Steven Wilson-To The Bone
3. U2-Songs Of Experience
4. White Reaper-The World's Best American Band
5. Godspeed You Black Emperor-Luciferian Towers

However, as I said in the original poll thread, I feel the methodology of excluding certain bands based on the fact that they once played metal and are listed here was extremely flawed. So my poll compliant list was really my 1-4 and 6. Here is my actual top 10, with some commentary:

Spoiler: show
1. St. Vincent-Masseduction. On the surface, one might dismiss this as simply another electro-pop album. But dig deeper and you get elements from synthwave, industrial, post rock, blues, and trip hop, all wrapped up in tight concise pop arrangements. Top it off with some emotive and honest lyrics (“Happy Birthday, Johnny” deeply impacted me) and her signature out there, unlike-anyone-else guitar playing, and you have a recipe for my favorite record of 2017, regardless of genre.

2. Steven Wilson-To The Bone. When SW said in advance of its release that this record would be influenced by his remix work for Tear For Fears, he wasn't kidding. Easily Wilson's most concise songwriting since Stupid Dream, the songs are lean and tight, but are certainly not lacking in his signature layering and sound design.

3. U2-Songs Of Experience. I recognize that U2 is low hanging fruit for ridicule for a lot of people, but fuck it, I highly enjoy their work and this album is no different. This album both treads new ground and is extremely familiar, and it's good to hear a band this far into a legendary career still take risks and not become simply a legacy act by pumping out safe, inconsequential records and touring the hits. They're still highly vital, creatively.

4. White Reaper-The World's Best American Band. Hook laden, straight forward rock and roll. If you don't like the song “Judy French”, you simply don't like rock music.

5. Anathema-The Optimist. If you are looking for great songs on an individual level, look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for an album who's whole takes you on a journey, then this is the album for you. One of the best concept albums I've heard in quite some time. Sad this album in particular kind of got dicked over a bit here, as they were not eligible for this poll but were eligible for the metal poll and only got one vote over there because no one should have to view this album as a metal album (rightly so).

6. Godspeed You Black Emperor-Luciferian Towers. There's not much this ensemble could do that I would not enjoy. This is no different.

7. Junius-Eternal Rituals For The Accretion Of Light. Junius' darkest, heaviest record, but sacrificing none of their signature dense atmosphere.

8. Dan Terminus-Automated Refrains. THE synthwave album of the year, the exploration of new sounds and arrangements on this is absolutely mindblowing.

9. Converge-The Dusk In Us. My first exposure to Converge and all I can say I “how have I missed out on these guys?”. Just a completely emotionally cathartic listen.

10. Noel Gallagher-Who Built The Moon?. A complete psychedelic mindfuck of a left turn from NG. Didn't see this one coming, but have high appreciation for it's bizarre-ness.

Here are my honorable mentions, alphabetical order:

Spoiler: show
Arcadea-Arcadea (Synthwave with Brann Dailor's over the top drumming? Awesome. Loses point for the presences of vocals-this should've been instrumental)

Blackfield-Blackfield 5 (Extremely good album, they simply have better songs on their earlier works)

Brutus-Burst (a late addition, but I connected instantly. The best debut of 2017, regardless of genre. They just have two things going against them-the name (this is the 28th band with this name listed on Discogs) and I think they should get a drummer so the singer can concentrate on vocals, as the vocal rhythms/patterns come across as extremely elementary and repetitive so as to make them easy to execute whole drumming)

Nelly Furtado-The Ride (I know her voice is not to everyone's taste, but I dig it and this experiment in full on synthpop)

The Killers-Wonderful, Wonderful (a solid Killers album, chock full of memorable tunes, but is very much the soundtrack of a band that's disintegrating)

Les Discrest-Predateurs (a compelling shift from post rock to trip hop)

Master Boot Record-C:\copy*.*A: /V and Interrupt Request (two absolutely brutal synthwave records, my only complaint is that each album is a bit over long).

Mogwai-Every Country's Sun (another well done Mogwai album)

Ulver-The Assassination Of Julius Caesar (yet another interesting stylistic shift for Ulver)

Roger Waters-Is This The Life We Really Want? (a bleak and somber lament on the state of the world, fit's nicely between The Final Cut and Amused To Death)

Other records I enjoyed from 2017 are: Richard Barbieri, Blink-182 (weird place where they released an entire new album as a bonus disc to a reissue of their 2016 album, I am only viewing the bonus disc here), Tim Bowness, Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, Glitch Black, Mandroid, Syntax, VHS Glitch.

A special mention to the ambient drone artist Ghost Harmonics, who released 18 albums this year alone. None of it is memorable in of themselves, but I've enjoyed them for the purpose of meditation/relaxation.

My biggest disappointments, alphabetically:

Spoiler: show
The Corrs-Jupiter Calling (the same reason I enjoyed the Roger Waters record is the same reason I was let down by this. This is my favorite pop band, and I don't want to hear a bleak and morose, largely acoustic, overtly political-even if I generally agree with the positioning-record from them)

Queens Of The Stone Age-Villains (I don't know what they were thinking with this. It doesn't help that Homme is an absolute scumbag asshole)

Rancid-Trouble Maker (This band just sounds old and tired in 2017 and that's with a new drummer that's 10-15 years younger than the core band members)

Weezer-Pacific Daydream (Rivers Cuomo has completely lost the plot and it's truly pathetic that Weezer has become an “outside songwriter” band)

Some other disappointing records from 2017 are: Michelle Branch, Brand New (this is a very good album that was unfortunately tainted), Brian Jonestown Massacre, Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, Galactic Cowboys, Liam Gallagher.

As for EPs:

Spoiler: show
My EP of the year is:

Perturbator-New Model (continues and raises the bar kicked off on his last album for experimentation with rhythms and time signatures in synthwave. Really wild stuff)

Honorable Mentions:

Crockett-Songs For The Forgotten (amazingly uplifting dreamwave)

Goodbye Berlin-Kinder (kind of a biased pick as I used to be in this band, but this EP is so fucking good, objectively speaking)

Nine Inch Nails-Add Violence (really dark toned and experimental for Trent, especially the bitcrushing loop that forms thew last third of this EP)

Replicant-The Reckoning (creative fusion of synthwave and post-punk)

I also enjoyed the EPs by the following local NJ bands (even though I don't live in NJ anymore, I try and stay in touch with the local scene):

Atom Driver (2 EPs released in 2017)
Centennials
Fortune Yeller
Six To Eight Mathematics

Thanks for the time and effort in putting this together.

What I find interesting about this list and the metal list is that no one knew how to handle the "borderline" bands.

Examples:

Ulver: 5 votes in the metal poll, really belongs here.
Anathema: 1 vote in the metal poll, really belongs here. Probably might have gotten a few more votes relative to the turnout had it not been specifically listed as a disqualifying example.
Full Of Hell: surprisingly only one vote here, I thought there would be quite a few "overcompensating" votes for this here, really belongs in the other list.
Deep Purple gets one vote on each list, really should not be here if the threshold is "if it's on the archives, it's metal".

Ah, what can you do. Such is the nature of genre tags and whatnot. I hope there is a bigger turnout next year.

Cool to see Incendiary get love. Barely was left out of my top 5 here.

This is 1000% my fault. I don't know how I had that lapse, especially for such an important band, but I totally forgot they were on here. Rookie mistake. Sorry!

If you're asking why I disliked the album, I simply did not care at all for the uber clean pop-ish production and sort-of danceable beats. Plus nothing stuck out to me past those elements on the first listen, and I was so wholly unimpressed that I have not gone back to it since. A very bland listen, and a complete lack of "rock", however defined (as I see it). To be fair, Era Vulgaris did not click with me until well after its release (maybe 2011-ish?) so there is a chance that this will grab me down the line, but on the flipside, Like Clockwork has still not clicked with me to this day. Them Crooked Vultures immediately resonated with me on the same level as Queens albums 2 through 4, so it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility he can put a record together that from the outset rocks with balls, but also treads new ground. But, to me, Villains is decidedly not that record.

If you're asking why I'm not a fan of Homme the individual, let's just say there are certain things that are out there that rub me the wrong way, personally (all easily Google-able). Not quite as an extreme revulsion as say your garden variety NSBM band, but yeah, an unsavory dude (I guess in some ways, all legit "rock" people have some degree of unsavoriness). But hey, far be it for me to suggest to anyone else but me be off put by these things though, just how I feel about it.

No need for apologies! Even with the low vote turnout, it's still a daunting amount of work, and errors happen-there were a few in the metal poll as well and BH is a seasoned vet in putting these together.

I'm just grateful someone has the drive to put the work in, so I can then sit back and spew my opinion!

As expected there was a ton of variety in the results, kind of cool to see just how varied people's tastes are. Here's my list:

1 Tagada Jones - La peste et le choléra
2 Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun
3 Eisbrecher - Sturmfahrt
4 Rise Against - Wolves
5 Starset - Vessels

I was quite surprised with my own number one - I don't really listen to hardcore at all but a friend introduced me to Tagada Jones and for whatever reason it just clicked.

Massive amount of good shit this year, this was a struggle to put together. There's about another super solid 12 albums or so that I exempted for the sake of trying to be concise (as concise as a top 40 can be lol). Also, did it through the Topster's collage website:

Spoiler: show
Image

My earlier post in the poll's thread with some words about my top 5:

Spoiler: show
Quote:
5. Rope Sect - Personae Ingratae (I think this is technically an EP, but w/e) - This is what Grave Pleasures should have been. With a better production job this sounds like it could have been the follow-up to Climax. Excellent post-punk/deathrock release.

4. Hundredth - RARE - These guys used to be a rather pedestrian Counterparts knock off (who themselves play pretty by the numbers melodic hardcore) but this album is a complete 180. Cold and sleek shoegazey post-punk sort of similar to A Place to Bury Strangers, albeit without the blown out production job. Starting to really get on board with these hardcore/punk bands transitioning to a softer sound. Turnover and Title Fight released a pair of phenomenal albums doing this and Hundredth follows up with a very worthy release of their own.

3. Protomartyr - Relatives in Descent - Some proper post-punk revival here. Gritty instrumentation, fantastic bass lines, very well thought out song structures and a hella good production job. Also, the vocalist reminds me a lot of Nick Cave, which is always a good thing.

2. Fleet Foxes - Crack-Up - Much more instrumentally textured and progressive leaning than their previous releases. There's nothing really overtly standout here as the album flows so cohesively, it's like one big track. Honestly, I've heard this upwards of 30 times and I'm still struggling to put into words my feelings for it, it's just so gorgeous and profound. Also, as always, Robin Pecknold's vocals are absolutely wonderful.

1. Converge - The Dusk in Us - I highly doubt this needs any introduction or explanation. Their best since You Fail Me, astonishes me how this band is still writing such fresh material on LP #9.

Here's a little bit more commentary up until #20 but gonna cut it off there as I'm sure it'll just end up turning into word vomit beyond that:

Spoiler: show
6. Future Islands - The Far Field - Every single one of their albums almost instantly has me hooked and this one is no exception. Absolutely stellar synthpop was some fantastic bass lines and vocalist Samuel T Herring is at his best. Seriously, this guy sounds like a foghorn, it's incredible.

7. The National - Sleep Well Beast - Lowkey, self-loathing Pitchfork-core tunes for the introverted millenial... and it's fucking gold, I don't care awful that sounds. Everything this band has done since Alligator has been very special to me and the more varied direction of Sleep Well Beast shows that this band still doesn't seem to be losing any steam. Beautifully crafted album start to finish from the slower tempo chamber pieces like "Nobody Else Will Be There" and "Guilty Party" to the more punk based tracks like "Day I Die" and "Turtleneck".

8. Full of Hell - Trumpeting Ecstasy - You know a band's doing great when their weakest release still reigns supreme over the majority of the other albums released in a pretty strong year. While pretty well all of the PV elements from the earlier albums have been swapped out for a grindier metallic sound, this album still just straight up slaps. That title track with Nicole Dollanganger is probably the most beautifully haunting song I heard this year.

9. Øjne - Prima Che Tutto Bruci - Italian post-rock infused screamo that takes a pretty played out style and rejuvenates it with extremely passionate vocals, aggressive riffing, and some wonderfully crafted melodies. That distinct European skramz influence is very strong here, channeling the likes of Daïtro, Raein and Suis La Lune.

10. Algiers - The Underside of Power - Some very politically driven, innovative post-punk with a kitchen sink's worth of genre crossover. This thing is packed with elements of blues, industrial, gospel, pop, you name it. That vocalist has quite the set of pipes on him too, great to see this band continuing to develop their sound after a strong debut.

11. Slowdive - Slowdive - Pretty much everything I wanted in a reunion album from these guys short of being another Souvlaki or Just for a Day. This is still vintage Slowdive chalked full of wistful, melancholic melodies, airy vocals and a very lush production job. Still crafting some phenomenal shoegaze two decades later.

12. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland - Tough call between this and Flying Microtonal Banana as their best from this year. Lots of respect for these fellas for putting out 5, all at the very least, solid albums in 2017 but this one takes the cake for me. This is probably the most progressive of the bunch and similar to last years Nonagon Infinity, flows more cohesively as a whole than their other releases this year. It's incredibly well paced, meticulously crafted and each spacey, psych induced track evolves and flourishes with wonderful progression. Major props for what they did this year, especially this record.

13. Blanck Mass - World Eater - I don't even really know what to say about this one. It's super gorgeous on one hand but at the same time cold and unforgiving. Like a rhythmically intense yet blissful industrial banger. The transition between the quaint "John Doe's Carnival of Error" to the suffocating void of "Rhesus Negative" gets me every time. Gets my vote as electronic release of the year.

14. Beach Fossils - Somersault - Lazy, slacker dream pop perfect for just lounging out in sun. Big piece of my soundtrack to this past summer with its infectious, jangly melodies and super blissed out, breathy vocals. A major step up in songwriting from previous releases, glad to see them coming into their own, especially with their contemporaries, Real Estate and Wild Nothing, releasing a pair of drab albums these past couple years.

15. Big K.R.I.T. - 4eva is a Mighty Long Time - Just going to straight up reiterate what I said about this one in the other thread. Brings together southern hip hop with a lot of jazz and soul motifs in a very cohesive double album. The juxtaposition of the traditional southern bangers and more introspective tracks make for a varied and interesting listen. Good to see K.R.I.T. back in the game.

16. Ostraca - Last - Extremely chaotic and raw screamo/emoviolence reminiscent of Loma Prieta, Beau Navire, City of Caterpillar and the like. Super passionate, foot to the floor pacing, and aggressive as all fuck. Nothing really innovative here, but just an extremely well executed banger of a skramz album.

17. IDLES - Brutalism - This is an extremely angry, abrasive and gritty post-hardcore release with some incredibly gruff, pissed off vocals, politically charged lyrics, dirty as fuck bass lines and supreme noisy punk riffage. No other album I heard this year makes me wanna just smash shit like this one.

18. Pile - A Hairshirt of Purpose - Big fan of their 2012 release Dripping but after the lackluster You're Better Than This, I didn't really have high expectations. Pile play a mashup of indie, punk, and noise rock, sort of akin to Parquet Courts (who released a fantastic album of their own last year) but have taken a much more melodic approach with this record and it seems be their most "album driven" to date. Shifts tempo a lot with the quieter songs leading into and playing off the bigger, more bombastic tracks very well and it's loaded with those winding, almost Pavement-esque melodies. Glad to see these guys regain their form this year, such an underrated band.

19. Remo Drive - Greatest Hits - Now this one is probably the biggest anomaly out of this list. Remo Drive play sort of an early Weezer revival brand of emo driven power pop. It's incredibly sugary but super infectious and just an all around fun record. This is just their debut as well, can't wait to hear more from these guys as they continue to develop their sound.

20. Big Thief - Capacity - Tremendously brooding acoustic indie with delicate, graceful but yet dark and eerie female vocals. Very captivating guitar work with some beautiful chord progressions and melodies that coincide very well with Adrianne Lenker's delivery that just envelops you inside the world she's describing. Also worth mentioning that it is definitely a backloaded album. "Mythological Beauty" and "Haley" are two of the best tracks to be released this year.

Exempt from this list is hardcore band Botfly's self titled LP. I had it placed between Blanck Mass and Beach Fossils, however, the album isn't available in the Topster's database (SUPER good sludgy hardcore by the way, very much in the vein of bands like Cursed, Cult Leader, Baptists, etc.)

Some disappointments of note include:

Spoiler: show
Queens of the Stone Age - Villains - In the same boat as FirebathDan here. Don't care much for the overly clean production job and the stripped down songwriting. Just no bite and nothing at all memorable about it. Big letdown after ...Like Clockwork.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Luciferian Towers - I get that they're never going to release another F# or Lift your Skinny Fists... but hell, this is the second record in a row that just literally does NOTHING. It just meanders around until the "Anthem for No State" trilogy and even that just sounds like a half baked call back to the Lift your Skinny Fists... / Yanqui U.X.O days. Don't know if I can even call this much of a disappointment as expectations were rather low after their painfully boring previous release. Shame too, because the first reunion album was so good. All good things must come to an end though, I suppose.

Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun - I feel like I'm sort of in the minority here of people that vastly prefer her acoustic stuff to what she's doing now, and even that being said, the two albums prior to this were excellent in their own right. However, this thing just drones on and feel so fucking mechanical even compared to the likes of Abyss it just left me thinking to myself "....ok" and that was about it. Maybe it's a grower, I know Abyss didn't exactly resonate super well with me right away but who knows.

Cloud Nothings - Life Without Sound - This band has no bark OR bite left to them at all. Here and Nowhere Else was a fun, noisy, catchy indie release with lots of great riffs, an excellent production job and a great vocal performance from Dylan Baldi. This is just very bland, uninteresting, overly clean indie rock with nothing particularly memorable at all about it.

At the Drive-In - in•ter a•li•a - I mean, I get that you gotta take what you can get with reunion albums but Relationship of Command is an all time favourite of mine and it's just such a shame that the long awaited follow up is such a tired, half baked attempt at recapturing the former glory. Definitely not a bad album, just painfully average and doesn't have a whole to write home about on it.

METZ - Strange Peace - After a strong debut and a pretty decent sophomore effort, METZ has now entered the "wow, this exists" purgatory of incredibly middling, average rock music. The production's pretty on point as usual, but the riffs are bland and song structuring overly predictable and phoned in. It's just 20 some minutes of yelling and the overuse of power chords that feels like 40 minutes.

Anyway, overall this was a very strong year. Can't wait to see what 2018 brings on!

My list

1. Converge - The Dusk In Us
Converge is a metal band. Its silly they dont have a page on MA, but it is what it is. Arguably the best album of 2017. What amazes me about Converge is that they keep pulling it off. Every album. Every time.

2. Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun
Its funny, because while Chelsea Wolfe is not a metal artist, this is a Metal album. Its doom metal, straight up. And the first Wolfe album Ive really liked.

3. The War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding
More War on Drugs. Tom Petty meets depressive black metal. Seriously, tell me there isnt a black metal influence in the song structures.

4. Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
I almost didnt include this one. Part of me just thinks its sadness porn. But if you have a wife and a young child... this album is... FUCKING DEVASTATING. It left me in tatters. This is the heaviest album, emotionally, I have heard maybe ever. At least for people like me with a wife and kid. A hard, hard listen

5. Rope Sect - Personae Ingratae
I love me some post punk. This is good post punk.

Holy shit-I completely forgot about this album, that's how utterly fucking terrible and inconsequential it is. Great assessment.

As I expected, my list was all instrumental stuff. The top 3 in particular are phenomenal and the other two could have easily been bumped out of the top 5 in favor of Outrun the Sunlight, Intervals, or David Maxim Micic, because it was very close between all of them.

1. Widek - Hidden Dimensions
2. Zaius - Of Adoration
3. For Giants - Big Sky
4. Scale the Summit - In a World of Fear
5. Angel Vivaldi - Synapse

Honorable Mentions (in no particular order):

set and setting - Reflectionless
David Maxim Micic - Who Bit the Moon
The Gleam of Last Light - Into the Ever Nothingness (EP)
Nova Collective - The Further Side
Outrun the Sunlight - Red Bird (EP)
Intervals - The Way Forward
Falling with the Rain - Vibes
Vasudeva - No Clearance

I also forgot All Will Know wasn't on the Archives, so I would also include Infinitas as an honorable mention. I heard Greta Van Fleet for the first time today actually, so with more listens I may have added them. I also barely listened to any hip hop this year, so my non-metal listening was almost exclusively instrumental music.

bwahahaha yesss Kublai Khan and Incendiary both garnered enough to get in the top 10! I love small sample sizes :D

my top 5 (which was pretty borderline "not metal", but whatever):

1) Chon- Homey
2) Kublai Khan- Nomad
3) Varials- Pain Again
4) Incendiary- Thousand Mile Stare
5) Fit For An Autopsy- The Great Collapse

Highly recommend the new Chon album. Never really dug the band until this release.

I mean, if you "separate the art from the artist" (a common mantra selectively applied around these parts mainly to justify supporting nazi/far right/white supremacist bands/artists), this album is truly excellent.

Unfortunately, the recent allegations against Lacey tainted my enjoyment of this album, as well as Deja Entendu, which is an all time favorite of mine. I can't view these albums the same way anymore.

+1

It's a p decent album, I'd put it about on the same level as Daisy and it's got some top-tier BN tracks like "Lit Me Up", "Waste" and "No Control". However, it was definitely a record that lost steam for me as the year went on (it was actually in my top 10 at one point), and the bullshit with Jesse definitely didn't help. Deja and The Devil and God... are in all honesty not the same either despite them being a pair of all time favourites I grew up with. I'm one of those people that's all for "separating the art from the artists" (and I mean, it's not like the rest of the band are pieces of human trash like Jesse), but it's hard to come back to super lyrically driven albums like these after the recent events.

This album has not clicked with me as of yet, but the single "My God Is The Sun" sticks out as a jam. I know this is better than Villains though.

This album is fun, energetic, has hooks galore, and the "Judy French" music video has Alexandra Daddario in it-all things going for it.

To tie it together somewhat, the White Reaper record is everything the QOTSA album should've been, not so much in style, but certainly in rocking energy.

I really enjoy it, probably my 2nd favourite of their's after Songs for the Deaf to be quite honest. Loved the much needed shift in direction and the songwriting, composition and production are all top-tier. The brooding "I Appear Missing" and bangers "My God is the Sun" and "I Sat By the Ocean" probably being my biggest favourites from it. Having said that, it's a big reason why Villains was such a letdown. I appreciate that they're continuing to evolve their sound, especially at this stage in their career, but it's just not doing anything for me.

The Night Siren is my album of the year, we don't deserve it lol. Especially after an album as good as Wolflight.

Also Sprach Zarathustra by Laibach is in a close second and I'm surprise nobody voted for it here at all. Overwhelmingly epic, immersive and dark.

I got the same enjoyment out of the White Reaper album as the one I got from the Rolling Blackouts release from 2016. Just fun, poppy and catchy rock and roll. White Reaper is a lot more overblown and in your face though.

Damn somehow I missed this poll, but this would have been mine and I can't believe no one voted for Dis Pater's darkwave project :nono:

1. Death Comes Crawling - S/t

2. Drab Majesty - The Demonstration

3. Slowdive - S/t

4. Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun

5. Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me

This is correct. I went back to my spreadsheet, and Tomcat_ha's list was calculated correctly, it was just a typo in my post. It only received 2 (#1 and #4) total votes (both you folks), not 3 (#1 and two #5's). Apologies!
