Something like that really isn't reaching, actually. There is a hand-in-hand mentality with a lot of these anti-reality fringe groups. Gamergaters, MRAs, Anti-SJW wankers, anti-feminists, transphobes and homophobes, and Nazis--and apparently when you meander more "deep web," fucking pedophiles and kiddie porn collectors.

It's not uncommon for these guys to find themselves in a fringe group and then slink from that straight into another one. When what defines you is some form of blanket hate for different groups of people, it's not a stretch to meander into another group defined by hate. A lot of times, they just straight up hate the same groups. The "mastermind" part might be reaching, but saying he's not a part of it is not.

Everything I know about Sargon of Akkad is that he's pure garbage, not unlike a good 80% of Thunderfoot and 100% of the Amazing Atheist.

The Amazing Atheist isn't bad, IMO. Though I wish he would revert back to criticizing religion instead of the SJW-movement. He's reasonably intelligent and good at debating.

But how is Fantano a part of any of these groups? You seem to have skipped a step there...

EDIT: Damn, I wish my 666th post was something a bit more *special*. I'll just post a super-kvlt song from my current aoty:

I used to watch Thunderfoot and the Amazing Atheist when they still had their focus on religion. I was quite the little militant atheist back then, and I enjoyed how they completely destroyed people like Ray Comfort. But you know, you grow older and you realize all those "brilliant criticisms" are actually quite pedestrian, and that Thunderfoot and the Amazing Atheist aren't actually that brilliant. Then they started shifting their focus towards feminism (because you can only refute Comforts banana theory and the flat earth so many times) and showed how bad they truly are.

@Resident_Hazard Really, Fantano isn't that guy. He has an unhealthy obsession with meme culture and sometimes hangs out on podcasts with less than reputable people like Sargon or TJ (amazing atheist) I guess that makes him "part" of that group in some way but as far as I know he's all about that progressive liberalism. You can be friends or acquaintances with people you don't agree with politically.

Man this jump is Kneivel worthy. The dude isn't defined by some form of blanket hare at all, he's defined by being a huge nerd who talks about music all the time. His crimes are liking dumbass memes and having a few shitty friends. Focusing on those two things and ignoring quite literally the rest of his life and career to draw a conclusion is exactly what that Fader article did. People are nuanced creatures I like dumbass memes and have a few shitty friends, thinking that makes me an alt-right sympathizer is just absolutely flat out incorrect because it ignores heaps of examples to the contrary.

my favorite thing about fantano (besides using doom and sludge interchangeably) is how he's repeatedly mocked the idea of body positivity while looking like a kraft single that got melted in the wrapper. i liked the guy back in 2011 but my god he became the smuggest, most insufferable cunt.

mike nobody is going to accuse you of being an alt-right sympathizer because you actually challenge shitty beliefs of those you associate with.

Derigin wrote:
Are you really shocked that journalists might not get Internet fads/communities/commentators and so overly sensationalize and dramatize what those communities do and are all about in order to get views?

I'm honestly just waiting for the day that we - as metalheads on the Internet - start automatically getting equated in the media with being members of the alt-right. It'll probably happen once such journalists pick up on the existence of NSBM, and of "right-wing" nationalist metal, and start assuming that all metalheads accept and enjoy such music. And, there'll be a number of us accused as such simply by association. When the goal of your media article is to draw conclusions, you will find them.

Nah. There are far too many anti-nsbm thinkpieces to begin with, including some on pretty big outsider publications. A vast majority of heavy metal fans make their disdain for ns politics known. It's the time we live in. Nobody went into the Fantano thing looking for a conclusion. I made the same conclusion as the Fader writer a while ago simply based off of videos I'd seen. It was there. You don't want to get lumped in with an ideology? Don't associate with it. If you do, make it known you disagree.

I wasn't commenting on him as an individual or his history or anything like that. I was only noting how those things can be sometimes too easily related, and that it's a rabbit hole too many have fallen down, ignorantly or otherwise. The way people absorb media online these days, the way memes are used as propaganda, and the way people fall for them. And people have taken drastic extremes in changing their views and attitudes, with it seemingly only requiring a couple small triggers. Laci Green, for instance, seems to have taken a hard turn away from her previously liberal and feminist views straight into the MRA rabbit hole.

I've had shitty friends as well. But I got rid of them.

Pepe is dead

No really, his creator killed him off because he didn't like Pepe being adopted by far right groups. I still love the little guy though. The non-racist version of him that is. Just like people can love the non-child molesting not anti-semitic version of Elmo.

Attended local animation showcase of sorts last night. Ran into an instructor from college from literally 15 years ago, and that was pretty cool. Was also the first "going out somewhere and doing something" date with the woman I mentioned recently--the bizarre Romcom of our lives. Both of us went to school for art and animation, and were probably one of the only actual couples (if not the only couple, not a ton of women in the animation field) there in that regard. During the showcase (in a bar called the Pourhouse), I realized I might be one of the luckiest assholes on the planet at the moment having her in my life while simultaneously fearing not only that I'm not good enough, but that I am a waste of her time. A friend told me to knock off that line of thinking. Accidentally parked in a ramp that did valet parking--turned out it was only $6. Pretty much a perfect evening. Our friend who was singularly responsible for my now-girlfriend and I meeting told us we gave her diabetes. We have untold plans for the future--already. And it all feels completely organic and wanted.

Facebook, news feeds, and what's happening in the world seems to be somehow sicker and more repulsive and awful every day. But this is moving in the complete opposite direction. Everything else can suck it. Seems like everyone I know is going through rough patches or worse except for me and her. This has been a very strange year. I at least appear able to end it on a high note.

That's is for my attention whoring for now. Just had to feel like I said it somewhere I guess.

Screw internet memes, guys. Witness the marriage of two of the coolest things in the world: horns and heavy metal!

Youtube: show

I really liked the first set of covers, and late last year they released a second volume that completely escaped my notice until the other day. The second set has a lot more guitar on it and so at times they come off a bit more like a normal rock band, but on the other hand there were some bits of the first set that came off slightly ponderous from time to time, so I think it's a fair trade-off. The first set had some really creative arrangements though. For instance, I love what they did with "Iron Man".

I know it's beating a dead horse, but I just heard this Five Finger Death Punch song called Trouble, and it's just the most braindead shit imaginable. When are they just gonna quit it with the music, and realize a career as a comedy ensemble?

Do Trouble have a song called 'Five Finger Death Punch'?

I saw Harley Flanagan from the Cro-Mags last night. Fucking life affirmingly good, intense stuff. Fuckin' We Gotta Know.

This can easily be solved by just a very minor expansion of chinese territory. I'm sure the russians won't mind. :)

lmfao if people think Fantano is alt right or alt right sympathizer cause of some dumb ass memes, they're idiots. And regarding anti-SJW quips, it's one thing to make fun of people for being ridiculous and embarassing and another thing to disagree with their ideas. I think we can all agree that an outburst as seen in the popular "trigglypuff" meme is embarassing and entertaining in a cringey way. Just because you make fun of something like that doesn't make you "anti-SJW".

And body positivity as an internet movement is in many cases a mockable idea when it sets out to praise the obese as healthy and capable as athletic folks. That being said, it's obvious that most people would agree that the overweight and obese deserve the same respect as any other human being.

And regarding his "friendship" with Akkad (I don't know much about it, tbh), do you really not keep friends with shitty opinions? I mean Sargon is a fucking doofus, but just because you are friends or associate with a dumbass doesn't make you a bad person. I work with and hang out with dudes that I like who have dubious thoughts on all sorts of things. It's not a big deal.

Nah I would not at all. What do you know about that person's life or circumstances? Making fun of that is essentially just punching down like a base level school bully. I find it extremely gross, shitty humor to laugh at that kind of stuff.

Yeah I mean maybe some individuals have odd ideas about it or something - still pretty stupid to make "fat people are unhealthy and I don't care who says otherwise!" a cornerstone of an argument or use it as a hill to die on.

Fuck, I hate all this Youtube personality and alt-right internet commenter shit. These people have to be the bottom of society. Kill me if I ever do that bullshit.

Empyreal, I’m the last person you’ll find laughing at the Trigglypuff meme (ugh, just saying the name of it makes me feel gross), but the exact reason it became a meme - the only reason ANYBODY took note of it - was that it was socially unacceptable behavior. Screaming rapidly and flailing your arms wildly when nobody nearby is doing those things is going to arouse negative attention. The person definitely did not deserve to be bullied on the internet and I really do feel bad for them, but I doubt there would be any details about their “life or circumstances” that would’ve made people turn a blind eye to that behavior. Essentially I agree with you, but not with the logic you used to reach your conclusion.

Dropping in for your yearly reminder that StarGazer is better than a lot of your favorite bands. A seamless blend of heavy metal (USPM?), black, death, thrash...

It's just an unbelievable thing they do, and if you love riffs and atmosphere you'll probably dig it.

Yeah, that kind of behavior needs a slap on the wrist, which is what the Internet mocking is doing. However, it is obviously a huge grey area as to how much criticism and mocking of the person constitutes bullying, whether it is disproportionate, etc.

And body positivity as an internet movement is in many cases a mockable idea when it sets out to praise the obese as healthy and capable as athletic folks. That being said, it's obvious that most people would agree that the overweight and obese deserve the same respect as any other human being.

Yeah I mean maybe some individuals have odd ideas about it or something - still pretty stupid to make "fat people are unhealthy and I don't care who says otherwise!" a cornerstone of an argument or use it as a hill to die on.

Literally what are you even talking about? How is Ninjer making that "a hill to die upon"? He's literally just saying "Body positivity = good. HAES = bad." How is that at all controversial?

Maybe it was unclear. I was just saying people who complain about or criticize body positivity irritate me and I think they just have nothing actually worthwhile to say. It seemed like PvtNinjer was saying this Fantano guy had gone on rants about that - if so then I doubt I'd enjoy what he had to say.

It's just an unbelievable thing they do, and if you love riffs and atmosphere you'll probably dig it.

Yeah they're great. Thanks for posting that song, I really need to listen to that album again. It used to be in almost daily rotation.

I think this album gets eclipsed by A Merging to the Boundless pretty easily, if you're not careful. They set out to do almost exactly the same thing, and Merging arguably does it more successfully. But I still think there is some real magick happening on A Work of Great Ages/A Great Work of Ages. It's one of those albums that rewards very attentive listening.

I haven't listened to Boundless enough to say which one is actually better, but I do remember it not hitting the right spot for me when I first heard it. It's very much a "sequel to" album. Better production value, expansion of existing ideas that worked brilliantly etc etc. I just don't think it made the music any better. The expansion of the atmospheric bits breaks up the flow and makes it feel overlong despite it being shorter than Ages. And that's also because it lacks a lot of those catchy moments Ages has. I also prefer the rougher production job of Ages.

But I really gotta listen to it more before I make a final judgement.

I am listening to Cradle of Filth's 2nd full-length, and it warms my heart that I still know the lyrics to A Gothic Romance by heart, even after all this time :)

Am I the only one here who really likes the new Morbid Angel album? I was pleasantly surprised to see Scott Fuller from Abysmal Dawn doing the drumming... I had no idea until just now.
