Check out this brand new interview with me up on Heavy Blog Is Heavy! A few cool topics discussed here if you're into what I do.

This thread covers a lot of ground-quite a bit of genre cornerstones as well as some deeper gems (VHS Glitch!). Here's two I dig that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread:

For heavier/darker stuff there's Master Boot Record. The gimmick is framed as metal played by a sentient computer. And it's not terribly far off-metal riffs and leads as interpreted through thickly distorted synths. The drum samples are reminiscent of old Godflesh, tome-wise. Plus, there is a bonus album out there called WAREZ that is a huge collection of old 8 and 16 bit video game themes done in the MBR style (this compilation is given away as a bonus when one buys any of the albums on Bandcamp).

For lighter/poppier stuff, Crockett is my go to. What's interesting is that the full lengths and EPs are thematically separate. The full lengths have this sleazy, 80s drug/crime underworld vibe while the EPs are more uplifting dreamwave. Really well done stuff.

If anyone is into tapes, I'm releasing a tape limited to 50 copies of Deathray Bam!'s newest album, Blackk Mirror. Really good synthwave/new wave/synth-pop from Brazil.

Not sure if this qualifies as pure synthwave, but it's bloody gorgeous none the less. Perfect composition, production and soundscapes woven into this almost ethereal urban feel. THYX is a project from one Stephen Poiss from Mind.In.A.Box, who already do some amazing dreampop, synthpop and whateverthehell, but this track is pure magic.

Gravity

So good.

Some of y'all might dig this. Occult dark synth, doomy parts with more aggressive middle section. Cool vocal samples

Check it out.

new occams laser fucking rules hard as shit

i'd also recommend electric dragon's latest. any fun/cheesiness from the debut has been siphoned out and all that remains is a feeling of occult malevolence. definitely a grower, but good god what an achievement.

The aforementioned Microchip Terror blew my mind, so did Lazerpunk. They both get my vote.

To be perfectly honest, I'm sometimes shocked (in a positive way) by how much gold there is within this genre.

Just came across this today, Maniac Lover's Vaccine is a pretty cool and sharp piece of moody, cyberpunking darksynth.

Shredder is cool though, met him in person before. He also lives in a castle and I am eternally jealous of that fact.

I've liked what I've heard thus far (a preview track here or there; I am aware the full album is streaming, but I am waiting for my vinyl to arrive), but I am iffy on the idea of vocals on every song, especially the over the top stylings from OxxO XooX.

I like the titular OxxO XooX project as well as the other artists/projects in that circle/collective (Ricinn, Corpo-Mente, Igorr, etc.), and appreciate vocals over synth music on occasion, but a full album of such, especially to that degree? I am weary, but trying to keep an open mind.

I do know the digital version will include the full album instrumentally, so if the vocals do not resonate with me, I at least have that as a fallback (the LP will be the vocal version only).

The Gost album is completely out of control. At the very least, it's on par with Behemoth (time will tell if it's superior-need a few more listens of each) and it easily eclipses Non Paradisi.

Supposedly the Hollywood Burns record is phenomenal. Have't heard it just yet as my LP copy is due to ship with my Master Boot Record LP (ordered at the same time). Looking forward to checking that one out.

I meant the Interrupt Request album without vocals, didn't know the new one was gonna have vocals. Yeah not sure about that.

That Gost didn't hit me as positively as Behemoth on my first listen (one of my favorite albums in this style), but I'll give it another shot.

edit: really impressed with Master Boot Record's songwriting. He does a great job composing these grand tracks in a neoclassical style that makes perfect use of motifs within the larger structure, and his songs are also usually really distinct. Standout for me in this style.

So I'm late to this, but I finally got around to checking out GosT's new album. This song was actually played at MDF when he was there last year. Afterwards, I listened to somebody's recording and heard that song's beat and got hooked on hit. I scoured his material trying to find out what song it was, but failed to find it. Turns out it was new material after all. :)

bumping to raise awareness to a very mandatory darksynth album: We Are Magonia's Apocalypse is kinda like if Carpenter Brut actually sounded heavy and dark instead of just pretending to 95% of the time.

I don't know if anyone has brought them up already, but despite the silly name, Billy Mays Band has quickly become a name I pay attention to. Afterlife is a great album. More on the slower, atmospheric/electronic side of synthwave, with really big, lush sound, and a lot of talent. The synth/guitar solo trade-off in "Private Sunset" is breathtaking.

yeah that's some good shit. thanks for posting, because i'd have continued to ignore them due to the name. not really sure that cover art fits either, looks more pert/gost clone darksynth than like timecop1983. oh well, music bangs and that's the important thing.

bumping to rec Maniac's 2121. don't let the understated title/art distract you from what is an absolute monster of a darksynth album. the longer-than-most songs incorporate more pounding/active stuff and vangelis/cyberpunk ambient. i honestly can't really find a fault here. so, so good.

Didn't realise there was a synthwave thread on here. I tend to like the darker, harder stuff, especially GosT and Hexenkraft, so here are some recommendations. Apologies if they have been mentioned before:

Masked - dark horror synth
Terrortron - dark horror synth
Kasei Lazer / Latex - (Kasei Lazer) dark sci-fi synth / (Latex) in his own words, Industrial Fetish Porno Rock Cyberpunk!!! Latex's own stuff is completely mental; it's more heavy electro sleaze punk with colourings of synthwave throughout and, er, ambient / industrial stuff with porno samples! I love it, although it may not be for everyone on here.

Masked was incredible, thanks! Terrortron is pretty good too. Didn't check the third one yet (not sure if I want to hear porn noises tbh :P), but the first two are solid recs.

Here's a couple of artists that I like:
White Gavri'el - Darksynth like GosT, but less emphasis on the satanic vibes.

Terminal Danger - chunky like Vector Hold but heavier (I think commando sounds like it belongs on Defenders of the Faith)

Vulta - For fans of Perturbator or DwtD.

Timestalker - Sounds like a synthwave/retrowave version of Perturbator.

i'd say that vulta album is primarily for carpenter brut fans since like half of it is just stolen ideas from trilogy. it actually kinda blows my mind how few others have noticed.

so shredder 1984's latest ep Undead Thrasher is pretty much just heavy metal on synths. like i know a lot of darksynth is described that way, but this really is just that. enjoyable enough, but i'm mostly excited to see what spawns from this release.

I wish I could show what I've been working on. Lots of guitar, proper vocals, still heavy on the retro feel and a lot of industrial/aggrotech sound as per usual. Yeah, it's a pretty cool direction to go in, similar to shredder's but mine is definitely different.
