First MrFister does five posts per hour in the "Now Playing" thread, now he's resurrecting all these old threads in The Tavern, the guy must be absolutely obsessed with his postcount.

At least his prose is delightful. Take him as a stylist, if nothing else.

For some reason there seems to be a user like him coming every month. They all either get banned or are being told to shut up so many times that they eventually do shut up. I wonder what MrFister's fate will be.

I love how he posts in topics like the Prog Rock one just to say he doesn't listen to Prog Rock, or in the job thread to say he has no job...seriously weird. :???: Boredom is a powerful motivator though, it seems...

I guess he's better off posting that than spamming the NP thread.

Urgh, worked till 19:00 and I was about the last optimistic person there. This girl almost cried cause she was afraid she would miss the buss to her boyfriend. SUCH DRAMA!

The Arch/Matheos album should leak soon and I'm sceptical about it...

The new Dream Theater album is quite amazing, the best since 6DOIT in my opinion. The departure of Portnoy feels like a relief.

Maybe the Finnish melancholy has turned on him a bit too much and needs to compensate this with some e-hugs or e-attention.

No matter how hard I try, I think I will always prefer Immolation to Morbid Angel. Not that that's a bad thing.

Have you heard the second song in the Arch/Matheos thread? It has really piss poor guitarwork. REALLY bad I mean.

And what sound Immolation like? Typical old school death metal?

Generally I hear people claiming that Immolation may be a turn off for people because of their song structures or something. I don't know; all I hear are tons of incredibly menacing death metal riffs. That, and Immolation have a better track record as far as production goes compared to MA.

No. It's a whole lot better. If you can believe that's possible.

The first one sounds quite a bit like Altars of Madness with a New York-twist. Also, perhaps a bit more twisted and darker. From there onwards (well, it's five years to Here in After) the song structures and riffs get more unorthodox.

The debut is pretty good, but Mythical and Magical is easily their best work. Transcendent.

I'll agree with Empy for this, as much as i love Volume 1, my favorite is Mythical & Magical.

Pure Transcendental Doom Metal! :)

Had to quit the gym for about three weeks due to what I'm sure is tendonitus. Blasted inferior tendons! I'm down a few kilos and it'll take weeks to make it back up AND I've got DOMS again.

Desolate Funeral Chant is a sweet tune. Very apt song title, I'd say, I'm zoning out to this quite nicely.

Mythical and Magical is my favorite Pagan Altar album, but they are all so great, it really doesn't matter. Class act, those guys!

You know what I've never really given much listen to? Early Scandinavian death metal. I mean, I like Merciless and Unleashed and Entombed and all that, but a large chunk of the classic bands and albums have really slipped by me. I'm only just now giving Like an Everflowing Stream a proper listen for the first time today, and I've got a good chunk of other Swedish and Finnish death metal bands ready to go afterwards.

But really, when I think of Scandinavia, I think of those two countries plus Norway, obviously. Sweden and Finland both have this huge roster of classic and underrated/forgotten gem death metal bands, but I almost never hear of Norway's contribution. Were there really no bands worth being mentioned alongside the big names or even the popular little guys like Wombbath? Or was the entire country completely caught up in that whole black metal thing that was all the rage at the time?

Yeah, I never really thought about that, but it is weird that death metal is essentially vacant there for a time period.

Dismember is awesome though, every album has classic songs on it and I find myself listening to their discography quite often when I want a death metal fix.

Pretty much. In fact, there's a fascinating section in Swedish Death Metal where Ekeroth himself muses about how strange it was for him (as part of the Swedish death metal scene) when all the Norwegians who had been connected to their scene suddenly distanced themselves from death metal and started playing black metal. As is well-known, the members of Darkthrone and Immortal had been playing death metal before they famously switched styles in the early 90s. This seems to be representative of the metal scene in Norway at the time.

In fact, Ekeroth almost seems to view the switch as a betrayal since the Norwegians abruptly started criticizing the Swedish scene when they had been pretty friendly in the past. Apparently the Norwegians no longer felt that it was appropriate to befriend Swedish metalheads or bands. (This would be consistent with what I've heard about the initial disapproval Dead and Varg faced as Swedes in the black metal scene. I haven't found any reliable sources that deal with the issue, mind you, just a lot of oblique references in interviews with black metal musicians. This might very well be inaccurate.)

I should really listen to more Dismember. I've heard Like an Ever Flowing Stream, and it was ok, but I always held Entombed in much higher regard. And now, whenever I get an itch to listen to that style, it's always Nihilist or Entombed. Time to broaden my musical horizons, I think.

Same. My favorite death metal band, so no surprise. Even Hate Campaign, which I didn't like before, I now love as well. So many good songs on it, with the title track being a classic in my opinion.

That's pretty shitty. I have tendonitis in my right elbow that acts up every now and again. I've been back at it for a while now, and getting more and more constant, and it hasn't been bothering me. I need to get lifting gloves or something, my hands have been getting rather torn up, and I've got some pretty wicked calluses at the moment.

Just reliving my love for Marduk's Dark Endless record. Quite possibly my favourite blackened death metal album, it's so good. I wonder how well they would have been received if they kept with that style of music.
