What do we think of this place, it seems pretty popular in the USA, but what about the rest of us?
I just signed up last night but I went to login today and they are "temporarily unable to accept logins. Please try again later."

http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites

I'll leave this thread here a for a while then maybe I'll merge it into the feedback thread, I searched the forum and got TWO results, so clearly nobody in here is talking about the place ha ha

Found my job, my bike, my house, and my roommates all by using Craigslist. So, really, I only have wonderful things to say about it. I think it's all based on the community itself, so if you don't have a very active city/community, then you won't have a very active marketplace, ya dig?

^What he said. Bought a bunch of music gear, sold a bunch of music gear, found two apartments with no hassle. Have had people attempt to scam me for the music gear once or twice, but those sorts are pretty damn easy to figure out. Actually, since moving near Chicago I've found a majority of my friends here through buying/selling music gear on CL.

The site looks old as, it's nice and light though, no excess baggage.
It seems to be tuned for your locale which may be a bad thing for me here in NZ

At least the site is back up and running now so I can have a poke around!

If you're interested in searching broader areas, I know the US has non-affiliated sites that index craigslist results by state or even by country. May want to check if there's something like that for NZ.

I just found this in their FAQ :crash:
Quote:
Can I post my ad on more than one craigslist site?

Please choose just ONE local craigslist site for which your ad is most relevant—generally the site closest to you. If your ad is equally relevant to all locations, your ad does not belong on craigslist. Please find another service. Posting the same ad to multiple locations on craigslist is prohibited.

You can get around that surprisingly easily. While living in Iowa City I decided to list a synth there, Madison (3 hours away) and Chicago (4 hours away.) Just rewrote the description and took pictures from different rooms. If it's equally relevant to multiple locations...CL can fuck right off and let me have a better chance of selling it. :D

Other than $$Ladies for a Private Escort Job$$ Would love to have a look at that if I wasn't using a work computer.

I mean, people looking for sex on CL is nothing new, I just tend to stick in the music and apartment sections so I forget how hilariously sketchy some of the other pages can be.

Country listing should be toward the top.

So I take it you're actually looking to get in contact with people to buy/sell something and figure out shipping between the two of you? (I.e., cutting out the ebay middleman.) That would be an interesting venture; I tend to search surrounding states but I can't say I've heard of anyone using CL for out-of-country plans.

Yeah that kind of works but I have to pick a city in a state to browse, I can't just choose "America" or "Australia"

Yeah man, CL is ludicrously American-centric, so you'll not have a ton of luck searching for countries unless you know the areas well enough. But, if you want to browse a country's offerings, my suggestion is to pick a city you know is large and just peruse. But, be warned, a lot of people will think you may be a scammer, seeing as you're in NZ, haha. So, it may take some convincing.

Speaking of which, here's my own scamming story: When I was in college I listed my old sax and a synth on CL. Got a message from someone saying he was interested in both, but he could only communicate via email due to a voice injury. Seemed strange, but whatever. He eventually mailed me a check (don't know if I had listed my address on the post or given it to him, I think it was the former)...For $3500, asking me to forward the remaining $3000 to him through western union. So, that was the end of that, although the whole "voice injury" thing should have set off red flags earlier. I held on to the phony check for the novelty and at least got a few laughs out of it.

Fark that's dodgy, I'd hate to get a cheque from overseas, it costs $30 to bank it and about 45 days for it to clear.
And if it bounces I have to pay a fee of something like $50 = Paypal is my best friend

Voice injury from singing perhaps... :hail:

Funny thing is, my emailed response was this snarky rant opening with "I have to give you credit for stringing me along this far, though I suppose I always was the most gullible of my friends..." Went on for a while, copied some gibberish speak from a few Lovecraft stories, and sent it off.

About two hours later I got one of those "Your password and username need to be reset, please email them to us" on my university email. Now, I got a couple of those every year, but the timing makes me think this guy read my first sentence and wanted to try one last parting shot.

Man, I can't believe I've been cheerleading CL this long, but that's probably because I'd be in a shitty/expensive apartment and local-friendless now without, so yeah.
