I recently discovered a service called Freegal Music that is available to me through both of the public library systems I belong to. The site allows library cardholders to download a certain amount of songs for free each week in the form of Mp3s, a number which is decided by each library system. It appears that lots of libraries throughout the country give their members access to this service. Do you think this site could count as a legitimate source of alternative album versions on the Archives? Discuss.

My first thought is no. You can go to your library and borrow a CD, and surely no one'd call it another version. A digital library just brings that principle to the era of networking, even though there are obvious practical differences. I guess it'd boil down to the fact, that while it's legal (depending on library legislation), it's not official.

Edit: I just realized official-ness doesn't really matter with other versions, but I don't know if it'd qualify as releasing. More like distribution, maybe.

Availability and release are not synonymous. To elaborate on Cursarion's notion of distribution, the music is available at libraries, be that in digital or physical formats, for educational purposes only, not for promotional ends.

Concerning new releases, there's no need to list two digital versions for one release save in very special cases. As for old releases, if a 1989 demo is suddenly available in digital format at said library, it definitely shouldn't count as a valid release.
