I'm talking mostly in terms of production. The sound on that album is very subdued and quiet... the bass is clean and prominent in the mix. The overall production seems kinda "rounded", "smoothed out", and rather dark, giving it a strangely bleak-yet-calm/relaxed, "old school" feel.

The instrumentation is a bit slow without being "sludgy" (note: not looking for Sludge recs here). The production is very plain and rough, but not really "lo-fi" in the sense that it's not swamped in tape hiss or excessive distortion/clipping.

So: prominent, clean bass. "Murky"/"rounded", dark, drab, minimalistic production. Something that feels pessimistic, depressive and tired, to the point that it borders on almost "ambient" sounding grindcore.

Sorry for the late response to this thread. Well, I am in the process of listening to these as I type this reply (I already know Terrorizer though, yes. Good band anyway. They actually did a split demo with Nausea, which is worth hearing).

Self Hate is a name I haven't heard before, but they sound great. I like this even though it's kinda not what I was looking for (still, reminds me A LOT A LOT A LOT of Agathocles, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned, so I can't complain).

BAJ I haven't listened to until now... The songs itself kinda makes me think of Nausea, even if the production is a bit modern... It's at least pretty sluggish in terms of pace, though. Not really what I'm after, but it's still enjoyable.

Massgrave is a name I've heard countless times but never looked into. This is really cool sounding. I like it a lot. Reminds me very much of Totalitar, only a good bit slower than them. Seems like something I'd definitely like to hear more of, even if the production's not as dark/soft/muted/"old" sounding as Nausea's early releases.


Cause For Effect could be perfect if they filled it out with some guitar and ran that through a tape deck, haha. It could definitely pass for "almost ambient" with the clean bass and very basic production, which is nice. I could see myself looking into them some more.

Le Scrawl is another name I never checked out, despite hearing it associated with so much other stuff I like... This is really nice for the clean bass. Overall, the production's pretty ideal. I'm not really interested in the Naked City-esque musical breaks, though. Still, the Grindy parts sound really good to me. I like the production anyway. It's not as dark or hazy, but it's still pleasant regardless. I suppose the guitars could be "darker", though, if I am gonna be picky about it.

Blood... Blood Blood Blood. I have always found it difficult to search for their music. It's perhaps too fast for what I want, but it still sounds pretty cool, and it has a nice murky (albeit harshly distorted) sound, and I'm glad to say I finally know what they sound like, and could definitely see myself listening to them more as well. The part beginning at around 4:25 is the perfect BPM range, actually.




So, in short, I like pretty much everything suggested (including Le Scawl, even though I wasn't in love with the musical segments), so thanks a lot to all for the suggestions. Definitely going to be checking out several of these bands further.

I might be missing the point of your recommendation, but maybe Drogheda's album Pogromist might be what you're looking for. Unfortunately, I can only find one song from the album online (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uTvhAvffbw), and it's not really representative of the entirety of the music (since it's got the weird bits of electronic influence like in the vocals and drums), but it's the same basic production job. Though I think it lacks the clean bass you're looking for, it always struck me as really murky, yet laid-back and easy on the ears as far as grindcore goes.
