I've been into avant-garde metal for a few months now. I'm a big fan of maudlin of the Well, Mr Bungle, Sigh, etc. What are bands I absolutely need to check out from the genre? Are there any great avant-garde metal bands out there that aren't listed here on MA?

They're more metal-influenced than actual metal but Polkadot Cadaver has some pretty damn good avant-garde material.

Unexpect! These guys (and gal) are completely balls-out insane, but they manage a magnificent cohesiveness if you get past the initial "Did they just go from Latin Jazz to Industrial Polka metal?!" reaction.

Umbah is excellent. Weird (sometimes dorky) with some top-notch songwriting.

Aarni.

They blend doom metal with folk music and just general weirdness. Intelligent lyrics, some written in different languages, that can also make you laugh.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum:

Zu - www.youtube.com/watch?v=hun8GlxGYus
Cranial Incisored - www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ9Prp0ihz4

You should also try, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Unexpect, Stolen Babies (are they AG?)
Mr.Bungle, Naked City, Umbah ... and a few more I've forgotten. Oh and Estradasphere.

And now that I think of it I'm not sure all of these are AGM. Close enough I hope.

Seconded. One of the most brilliant and underated bands in existence. Total and complete insanity !

This is another brand new project from the same vortex of madness :

PainKiller is one of my favorites. It's a John Zorn "grindcore" project. It's a much more serious and darker approach to the free jazz / grindcore style he has going on Naked City. Mick Harris from Napalm Death drums on it, and Justin Broadrick is featured on two tracks on the second album.

If you like black metal, go ahead and check out Diabolical Masquerade. Not quite as weird as Unexpect or Sigh, but still worth a look.
