inb4 brutal legend.

Was going to say final fantasy, the soundtracks for those (especially ten) were brilliant, as were the games.

Kingdom hearts has a similar kind of soundtrack, both of those are good, (great games too.) Can't think of any others, as I don't play games so much any more.

I'm partial to Chrono Cross and Shadow of the Colossus. In the case of Chrono Cross I listened to the soundtrack before even playing the game and thought it was amazing music. Recommended.

Oblivion and Skyrim have good OSTs
not all that similar to Zelda, Metroid and Pkmn though.. (godfuckingdammnit I ADORE the music for these series)

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 had a great soundtrack. Good industrial stuff kinda like Metroid Prime (not thaatt similar but if you liked MP's ost you might like RA2's)

This a million times over. There is almost no soundtrack more fitting to its intended work than this soundtrack.

If you're looking for something older and more metallic though, the super, super, super obvious answer is the Mega Man X series, but if you didn't already know that then you're dead to me.

The first three Dragon Warrior games have excellent music, it varies a bit between releases (I believe the sound chips had slightly different sounds for Japan and the US). I prefer the first and third, both for the music and games. It's also different with the NES versions and the GBC re-releases.
This video shows some of the music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U5gnCG0AUI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJSy4g0Daxk

Chrono Trigger has great music and plenty of gameplay too. The music works very well with the story.
Here's the intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqTZfknDVes
The boss music is awesome, it also worked really well with little old TV speakers. The shrill sound didn't lose any of the symphonic feel of it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGZNL0lbtjE

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 has excellent music, though it really gets chopped up during gameplay if you don't take your time on each screen.

Seconding Chrono Trigger, from the makers of Final Fantasy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cZeMdFWpEI

Also from the makers of Final Fantasy, there is Secret of Mana, which I think is the best soundtrack on the SNES, very underrated. Here's a couple great songs:

Castlevania, straight up. I personally loved the soundtrack from Lament of Innocence best of all, though I believe it was the only one not to feature electric guitars and is the least similar to the stuff you mentioned, OP.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AohscTU5PZc
For the older stuff check out Vampire Killer or Bloody Tears.

Also thought the Warrior Within fighting music was pretty dope. Pretty metal, too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJe_22XxvMI

Also, fucking TIMESPLITTERS 2! That game's soundtrack was as fun and fantastic as it's multiplayer:

I enjoyed the soundtracks for both Persona 3 and Persona 4. Both have more pop-oriented soundtracks with the occasional foray into hard rock, but the former has more of a hip-hop influence and the latter is more straight-up pop.

Persona 3:
"The Battle for Everyone's Souls"
"Mass Destruction"
"Unavoidable Battle"

Persona 4:
"Mist"/"The Genesis"
"Reach Out to the Truth"
"I'll Face Myself -Battle-"

God of War basically has a metal soundtrack on it, including Opeth and Dream Theatre

Not in any of the 5 I've played.

But hey, God of War II does have "Isle of Creation", which may very well be the best orchestral theme in...ever.

The Silent Hill saga has awesome music by Akira Yamoka (until he left Konami a couple of years ago); Yamaoka is one of the pioneers of Trip Hop music, and often fuses it with ambient, industrial and very melancholic rock influences:

Hope you like it, I'm a big fan of his work; hi released a great solo album with the same styles he uses in the games!

Even though the game sucked Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World had some good songs. Motoi Sakuraba is awesome in general.

The Touhou series, once you get past the weird ZUN noises/trumpets, has a pretty cool soundtrack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPTOQd9E6gE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmy6rcn_v3A

Also I like NieR's soundtrack

And Irisu Syndrome

Also, seconding Silent Hill. That stuff is great.

Satan's Hollow, in particular the Commodore 64 version. In the other versions I find the tempo of the music too fast.

SuperTuxKart has some cool music too, different for each track. I especially like the electronic music on the spacier tracks.

I'm a big fan of RPG games and I have to say that I love the soundtrack for the Spellforce series. They have a very LOTR feel that goes perfectly with the atmosphere of the games. Also Sacred 2 features a great soundtrack and a theme song done by Blind Guardian, who are in fact NPCs in the game.

Jets'n'Guns... The whole soundtrack was made by Machinae Supremacy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxZ5WSUju04 It's a fan made trailer, but the music is from the game.

Oh, and I forgot to point out one I don't see mentioned often, from the makers (and thus the same composer) of the Guilty Gear series, we have Blazblue. That linked song is one of the best straight metal songs in a videogame I've heard. At 1:18, it turns into the song power metal bands wish they wrote.

Fire Emblem has some awesome songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo1fWook83g

Eternal Sonata's music was great. The music was composed by Motoi Sakuraba, but since the game is actually about Chopin there are a lot of his songs in the game.

Of course if you like Final Fantasy music I have to make sure you listen to the Black Mages

this thread surely needs some Amiga & C64 classics!!! These following tracks don't come along with any guitar stuff going on but are just brillant examples what great music could be made back then with just a few bytes at hand. Not sure if many of you share this opinion but to me personally (and surely also from a nostalgic view) these tracks surpass any of modern videogames where a full orchestra can be "emulated" with the right program.

X-Out
overall very great music but the hymnic music in this intro is just sooo awesome:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRujgE5VgDA

The Last Ninja "Central Park" & "Park Loader"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoGFV_xxR64
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfIczhHhMT8
(there are also fantastic remixes of these song, then with guitars
added like here: http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/1847 ... mix%29.mp3 )

Alien Breed
great sci-fi atmosphere music
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h954mvdXVLg

Shadow of the Beast
soothing flute and synth stuff setting up the perfect atmosphere for the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qipWqOwkceg

Turrican I & II
classic - period
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S97pR5RkT8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvha_2hA ... re=related

R-Type
instant classic again ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDlvga_j0Ks

Hybris
a not so well known Shmup unfortunately. A great game with outstanding music

Surprised F Zero X has not been mentioned. The most metal sounding soundtrack I can think of from the N64. Speed metal fans should love it.

Crysis 2 has some cool industrial stuff. It's composed by Hans Zimmer as well.

Rise of the Triad. And to top it all, the 2012 remake is getting a full-on "metal remix" soundtrack.
