So I've been listening to neofolk for a little while, and I've been enjoying a lot of what I've been hearing, but this is a question I have to admit I haven't quite been able to answer. Where exactly is the line between neofolk and 'plain folk'? I've heard it said that neofolk is more distinctly dark, that it draws more from more extreme sources of music like post-industrial or metal, but I don't see any of that reflected in, say, The Soil Bleeds Black, or The Moon and the Nightspirit, both of whom are tagged frequently as neofolk. So... any thoughts on just what divides neofolk from folk?

Musically there's not really any clear divide, the distinction is that neofolk grew out of the 80s british industrial scene(which was of course not defined by any particular sound but by experimentation anyway). Nowadays there are bands not at all related to the british industrial scene imitating bands that were in it, so it's vague and doesn't really mean much.

I've even seen Changes (Robert N. Taylor's project) referred to as "neo-folk." Which is kind of ridiculous, considering they originate from the late 60's, although I suppose they could be said to "anticipate" the neo-folk genre.

Also, I was wondering if some of New Model Army's more acoustic-based stuff (e.g. "Higher Wall") could be considered neo-folk?

The new Arditi came out yesterday, it's called "Imposing Elitism", but for now it has only been released on tape, limited to 222 copies, though by the band's Facebook page I've gotten the impression that it will also be released on CD and vinyl sometime soon. What I don't get is why it wasn't released by Equilibrium Music (who had released their few latest albums). Were they dropped or did they leave the label?

I'm looking for Dungeon synth similar to Mortiis and Lord Wind and some Nordic Folk/Ambient similar to Wardruna. I guess this is the right thread to ask these questions?

Invictus, Wongraven, Fata Morgana and Burzum's ambient albums.

I didn't say this before but some Slavic folk that has influenced Russian Folk Metal band Apkoha would be great to be honest anything that would be Dungeon Synth/Medieval, Nordic Folk, Slavic Folk, Celtic Folk feel free to recommend.

I went through a massive DS phase a year or two ago, I'll see what I can do to help.

Erang. I favour his first two albums, he moved to a more digital sound after that.
http://erang.bandcamp.com/album/tome-I

Til Det Bergens Skyggene. One of the best, and most obscure, only available on limited cassette from Voldsom.net, but may have been shared by now.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO-69StIDck

Хладогорье / Hladogorie. A great Russian obscurity that falls somewhere between DS and the more nature-themed stuff that I used to call Winter Synth. Available here under the English translation of the name (Cold Mountains):
http://dungeonlorefoundation.bandcamp.c ... tive-vasts

Loremaster. An excellent project that offers a slightly more refined and restrained take on the genre, slightly neoclassical in feel.
http://loremaster.bandcamp.com/

Dalina. Beautiful folk ambient from Belarus.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdVciCJfNuc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4j_Z6Zz2G4

Basically, treat yourself to a trawl through the pages of this:

changes get lumped in with it because they're evolan fascists like a lot of the main neofolk dudes and because michael moynihan from blood axis encouraged them to reform and mastered and partly released their first album.

i can't get into any of these modern martial industrial bands, they all sound like they want to be generic film soundtracks and the nazi shit isnt even used in an interesting way.

Yeah, I figured they were some variety of neo-Fascist - which is almost expected, I suppose, in the neofolk genre. Though at least Taylor, unlike Moynihan, actually knows how to write a decent melody.

Nebelung's last album is wonderful. Not entirely instrumental though, but the "vocals" are just whispers that don't last much anyway.

Bear with this request.

I'm looking for NON Neo Folk that sounds like Dead Can Dance, particularly the female vocals (not a fan of their male vocals).

Examples of DcD songs I like.

prefer electronic based stuff.

Hey guys I've been searching through this thread (and elsewhere) for more bands that are of a certain type of neofolk I guess? I really like the stripped down, predominately acoustic stuff that gives off a vibe along the lines of novemthree (the closest example to what I am looking for). Some of the other bands that I feel would fall into this category are:

Arrowwood (very similar to the kind of music I am looking for)
Forseti
Green Mistletoe
Darkwood
Sangre de Muerdago

Any rec's would be awesome!

Hah, strangely, the last Slowdive album Pygmalion reminds me of DCD at times.

This song may not be the best example, but check out the album.

I presume you're familiar with Arcana? They're the closest thing to DCD I've ever heard, especially the more medieval-themed material. I only know the first two albums, so I can't speak for the rest of their stuff.

A bit of a long-shot (and much less electronic), but parts of Nàda's second album "Ùr" have a bit of a DCD vibe about them.

Depressive Silence is a great dungeon synth band that nobody talks about. They only released some demo tapes and a 7 inch, then disappeared. It would be nice if someone would reissue all their material on CD one day.

Their demos are up on youtube though if you'd like to listen to them:

Ataraxia are reminiscent of DCD and they have only female vocals (and very good ones). I really liked their most recent album "Wind at Mount Elo", which is a bit more dark-wave-ish.

PS. You could also check Attrition - The Unraveller of Angels which is more electronic based.

I'm just starting to get into neofolk, and though I have some idea of where to start, it's still quite daunting. (just because of the sheer number of releases in the genre) Does anybody have any entry-level neofolk RYM lists or anything on hand?

Ataraxia - The Wind At Mount Elo would be a good starting point, as it is a mixture of neoclassical, neofolk and some dark wave elements.

Start with the bands that created it, Death In June(from Brown Book onwards is their neofolk period, What Ends When The Symbols Shatter and Roseclouds of Holocaust are the two most essential ones) Sol Invictus(In The Rain is his best one and a good place to start, go forward in his discography for a more lush sound, backward for more stripped down postpunk influenced material) and Current 93(Thunder Perfect Mind is the best of his neofolk period, but for starting out Of Ruin and Some Blazing Starre and All the Pretty Little Horses are good too, maybe Sleep Has His House if you like harmoniums but that's moving away from the folk sound). Most of the other neofolk that's actually good is made by people from these acts or by people that have collaborated with these acts(e.g Nature and Organisation, Fire + Ice). There's a few exceptions(Of the Wand and The Moon for instance) but most recent neofolk is pretty insipid and it's probably not a very good place to begin. It'd be like getting into thrash metal by only listening to thrash revival bands.

well if it's got a bunch of stuff from other genres tossed in it's probably not a good place to start.

i can't say i've ever come across that. seems like it wouldn't suit the music very well. david tibet gets a bit abrasive on some current 93 releases(swastikas for noddy springs to mind) but we're not really talking metal vocals. some of those martial industrial guys get a bit shouty i guess.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the third song is a cover of a song by The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath A Cloud.

I've been trying to get into Martial Industrial, and I need some recommendations. I really liked Blood Axis's cover of Walked in Line, and I'm looking for more stuff like that.

Not that similar to your mentioned track but a good starting point for martial ind. is Triarii. Quite bombastic, great drumming
and they (he) actually do have songs rather than just soundscapes.

Well, if we're going into obvious recommendations, then check out Arditi, Toroidh, Legionarii and Striider for a start...
