Hi, I'm looking for good, melody-first metal reminiscent of that spooky mischief sound like Danny Elfman's film scores (he scores almost all of the Tim Burton films.) Examples of this that i have found and enjoyed include bands like uneXpect and Diablo Swing Orchestra, and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum to a lesser extent. I'm not saying Avant-Garde metal is the only genre i'm looking for, but these bands exhibit the kind of feel/mood I want. Another example of this style i'm looking for is Devin Townsend's "Juular," if that helps. I appreciate any held or suggestions. Thank you.

I don't think it gets closer than this!

This is a instrumental medley I made a year ago basically turning different 80s/90s eurodisco/synth/pop stuff into classic speed metal.
I play guitar, drums and bass. It's a bit sloppy but it doesn't matter much :)

At 1:14 there's a section taken from Oingo Boingos "No One Lives Forever".

Dimmu Borgir. To be honest though their music is closed to The Simpsons end of Elfman's work.

I kind of get a "Danny Elfman" feeling when I listen to Finntroll or Svartby. Lots of off-kilter, jaunty sort of melodies.

If you don't mind deathcore "Motionless in white" are supposed to be obsessed with the man, can't vouch for the music though, I never could bring myself to put that album in.

The most obvious answer is Mechanical Poet. Their first three albums are exactly what this thread is about. Check this band out, they're obscure but awesome.

You may also like certain songs by Avantasia, Symphony X, Finntroll, Nightwish, Therion, Type O Negative, Cradle of Filth. For example, this Avantasia song is the first thing that come to mind when I hear "Danny Elfman metal"

The first track on Shining - IX is sort of a cover of an Elfman score for Tim Burton's Batman. It's the scene where Catwoman first transforms.

Try Carach Angren, especially their album "Where The Corpses Sink Forever".
