It seems like one of the big criticisms of Alcest is that they simply aren't as good as their contemporaries, which their fans assumedly haven't been exposed to. So what can you guys give me in the way of melancholy Shoegaze-y stuff? Doesn't need to be metal, but I don't want anything too happy, at least not without some contrasting sadness.

In terms of melancholic shoegaze, the archetypal band is slowdive. Their first two albums are the best, the third one is a bit more experimental and probably fits in better with ambient than with shoegaze, if I remember right Brian Eno produced the album, and might have written one of the tracks. I might be wrong about this.

Lovesliescrushing are more of an ambient form of shoegaze, but still quite melancholic, if in a bit more of a dreamy way than slowdive. Their first two albums: bloweyelashwish and Xuveyten are their best, and their most shoegazey.

Other than those two, some others to listen to (ignoring famous shoegaze bands that aren't melancholic here to better suit this request) are: Anilore, cranes, the jesus and mary chain (not as shoegaze as most listed, more post-punk, but could be called proto-shoegaze), destroyalldreamers, mahogany, malory, miranda sex garden, windy and carl. Hope that helps.

I was on spotify yesterday and started listening to Thomas Koner. Really liked it, got another 2 albums on there to listen to, but any more recommendations in that sort of style when I'm done? I like my ambient music a lot, but Permafrost by him seemed to have a really unique atmosphere compared to most other ambient I've heard. Most sounds "warm" and relaxing, while this album seemed rather bleak, and while not unsettling, definitely not as relaxing as most ambient.

Funny, someone told me to check out Thomas Koner because I really like Ben Frost. I forgot all about him until your post, thanks. And, as i've said, if you haven't heard Ben Frost do so now.

He's a bit more dynamic, and later works have gotten a lot more into drone/whatever territory.
First album, Steel Wound, is guitar driven ambient

From his second album Theory of Machines

And By the Throat which is my favorite, yet not as relaxing or spacial as Koner.

What about Eluvium?

Listening to By the throat as it's on spotify, and I've never heard so much going on in an ambient/drone release! Will need to give his earlier work a listen, shame it isn't on spotify.

^My portable hard drive broke last week, so I don't really have the space. Decided to sign up for spotify premium for the free month just so I've got ambient music for assignment time pretty much. Will cancel after that, as it's a god-awful service really.

Anything like Angelic Process or Nadja?

Particularly the darker, gloomier and more overwhelming stuff.

I'm looking for any sort of bands that resemble Cygna - Euclidean Subspace in any way. Does anyone know anything of that sort?

Got a couple requests.

Looking for some good Post-Rock/Metal with good synths and guitars. Stuff like Caves of Glass is a prime example. Songs like Mariana at about 5:24 where the guitar and synth really kick in, or Barren Earth at about 5:29, but the entire songs are good of course and build ups are nice. Forgot to add that length shouldn't be overly long, about a 13 minute limit, and vocals aren't necessary but if they have it I won't mind.

I can't really label these next ones but stuff like the new Born Gold 1 2 and the bilinda butchers 1 2

Also I really like the general Black-Gaze/Post-Black sound so any regular request for similar stuff to Aves, Amesoeurs, Les Discrets, etc. You can check my last.fm to see which artists I already know of as I don't have that large a library.

If I think of any more requests I'll be sure to update or make another post.

Edit:
Also looking for some good Post-Rock that has good use of synths. Kind of like what I posted for Caves of Glass, just not "heavy". Prime examples are In Suspended Atmosphere 1 2 3 and what I guess Kid North is now doing at about the 3:53 mark. Vocals aren't really necessary but I don't mind them, as long as they're clean and not abrasive.

Hi. I'm new to ambient music. I mean, I've heard Hlidskjalf a bunch of times, but that's about it. Do you have any suggestions for me? And I'm not looking for atmospheric black metal. And I'm not looking for elevator music. I'm talking about atmospheric ambient music. Thanks.

Here's a few vague suggestions for a very vague request:

Paysage d'Hiver - A BM artist, but "Die Festung" is an entirely ambient album, very much in the vein of the Berlin School of electronics (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Ashra etc)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A5InzdU3dg

Raison d'etre - Dark ambient
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qz15AKiKCAs

Mortiis - archetypical Dungeon Synth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0hmrkrZjm0

Aphex Twin - massively influential electronica artist, most of his stuff is headfuck acid/techno or IDM, but "Selected Ambient Works vol 2" is a double album of pure ambient.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR3COwPFKJs

Mealann - atmospheric ambient
http://mealann.bandcamp.com/

Loremaster - relaxing, ancient-sounding dark ambient/dungeon synth
http://loremaster.bandcamp.com/

My four favourite ambient releases are:
a winged victory for the sullen - S/T
Christina Vantzou - no.1
Stars of the lid - and their refinement of the decline
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath 1972

Pretty well known ones in the ambient genre all, but all really good. Any William Basinski is good to try too.

I shall repeat this request with a bit more in-depth meaning of what I'm looking for, although this song pretty much is, but one song is never enough :P
I'm looking for something that's ambient, preferably sine-intensive (check 1:53 for reference), versatile (if you check 0:42, 3:45 and 6:12, it's different ~ it's not just repeating the same thing over and over like Burzum with his 4 notes :P), and yet still coherent. Also the melody is actually a melody, and just not a mash-up of nonsense which many dark ambient bands do (see this song for reference of what I am not looking for)., or just empty noise with no meaning.

So yeah, I'm looking for melodic ambient if that exists. :P Sine-intensiveness is a plus, but choir and orchestral instruments are also a plus. What matters is being melodic and having a lot of ambience.

(by the way, even though it doesn't really match the versatility criterion, the band I linked as a reference of what not to give, they also have some neat songs like this one, before anyone thinks it sucks.)

If any of you are into experimental/improvisational noise, you should really check out Nelson Baboon's new release on Game of Life, Lord of Drool. It's mostly treated violin, Ciat Lombarde, and Serge modular. Gene (Nelson) is really at the top of his form on this. I've been following his music for years and he really is unique in the noise genre.

I went through this whole post, but didn't really see anything similar to Ben Frost.
I'm in love with the "Steel Wound" album. Very beautiful, life-changing. I tripped psychedelics to that album and since then I've never really found anything quite as amazing. I love the layers of sound and progression of ambiance. I'm not looking for anything harsh/dark (By The Throat and Theory Of Machines for example) but rather more of a soul-journey. I'm not sure how to describe it, but anything as atmospheric as this song would be appreciated..

That's actually really close to what I was looking for, thanks! The vocals really added to the atmosphere as well.

You should really check out Steel Wound. IMO, it's his best work. Theory Of Machines is great, too. By The Throat is his weakest output, I think.

Not sure if this is would really fall under this thread's umbrella, but I'm looking for indie lo-fi/noise pop bands. I've heard and like some of the classics like I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One and Bee Thousand, but I'm really looking to dig deeper into the underground. One album that really blew me away was Pure X's Pleasure. The album's darker tone, spacious production and brilliantly layered textures was just excellent. I wouldn't mind some shoegazey stuff too. So anyway, if this is too far removed from this threads purpose, please PM instead. Thanks!

Tony, "electronic drone, etc..." doesn't make it obvious that this covers shoegaze as it's a very different genre to those, and this might just lead to people making shoegaze threads again as they don't realise or something.

Anyone know any good shoegaze that uses the "wall of sound"(read: vacuums) thing and female vocals, maybe 2 vocalist male and female if they have it. Stuff like Whirr or My Bloody Valentine. I prefer it not to be too fast and poppy if you know what that means, the Whirr song is a great pace of what speed I like.

Also looking for good chip-tunes music that isn't entirely "hurr gameboy sounds such a geek XD" but more stuff like Insert Disc and The Tower of Heaven OST, that's more well composed and doesn't just rely on bleeps and bloops. I would also really like to see more shoegaze/rock stuff with vocals that incorporate chip music like The Depreciation Guild did.

Oh I just noticed this thread.

I listen to 8-bit music sometimes. But I have a very limited collection of stuff by Nullsleep and You Love Her Coz She's Dead. I'm looking for something melodic. Any recommendations in this sub-genre?

Ah thanks man. I listened to it while I worked. That's some mellow fun stuff. But it was quite linear, if you catch my drift. I'm looking for something more chaotic and more instrumentation.

Anybody know any post rock which focuses more on the destination rather than the journey? Most post rock is all about the slow build, and the fast majority seem to take a "yeah, we've peaked this movement let's get it over with so we can do another build up" mentality, I'm looking for bands that are pretty happy spending half a song or even more in that "release" phase, like Gifts From Enola, Flies Are Spies From Hell or God Is An Astronauts self titled (oddly enough everything else they've done is very build up based) for example.

Is Red Sparowes too obvious? Although it does have a heavier edge than most post-rock it's possibly something you'd enjoy.

Nothing is too obvious, my knowledge of the style is limited to like, twenty bands. They're a band I know of, but never actually tried out.

Hope I got what you're saying correctly...

Think Isis circa Panopticon minus the hardcore/metal, with an emphasis on the atmospheric elements. Jeff Caxide (Isis) and Josh Graham (Neurosis) were also members of the band. I'd say to try their second album first as its their best to me.

I'm looking for more artists or albums of ice/forest/nature-themed synth/ambient, in the vein of the synth-only albums by Ildjarn, Paysage d'Hiver, Vinterriket, Moloch (Ukr) etc. I have recently started a blog dedicated to this area of music, intended to complement the already-established Dungeon Synth blog, and I could do with suggestions of any artists or albums I have missed.

Here is the list of releases I have so far compiled:

Just to clarify, I am NOT looking for Dungeon Synth (Mortiis, etc). Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

I should have a few to add if I can remember them balbulus! Like me you consider the PDH album to be the best, so you should def check out Forest Silences "The 3rd Winter" demo, (as well as Winter Circle demo),very similar and could easily have been part of that fantastic release. I should have more for you but this will be a great starter -

Also check out some of the UBMR bands such as Igric, they have some very good ambient work. I got a copy of the "Elegies of Endless Horizons" split when it came out and think it is an excellent release.

Good luck with this mate, a good idea.

Thanks STORMM, Forest Silence is EXACTLY the sort of thing I'm looking for. Funny, I have their later full length, but I didn't realise their earlier stuff was puely ambient. I'll look into the others when I get a chance. Cheers!

I'd like to bump lord_ghengis' request and twist it for myself a bit. I'm not looking for atmosludge/post-rock crossover bands nor am I looking for bands inserted on the first of the two. I'm actually looking for post-rock but with a big sense and use of dynamics instead of being just all minimalistic atmosphere and build-ups. To give some examples, stuff like GY!BE or later day Swans is everything I'm not looking for. Stuff like Explosions In The Sky and Mono is everything I'm not looking for as well. I don't appreciate Mogwai's style either and Sigur Rós I just loathe.

So my point being, post-rock that isn't all minimalism and is very dynamic in its sonic delivery. It can employ minimalism and build-ups but that shouldn't be the primary focus of the songs. I already know of Russian Circles by the way, and even though they're not exactly what I'm after they do put some of the aforementioned ideas into practice.

I think lord_ghengis will probably also appreciate some of the requests oriented to me. ;)
