I'm looking for some bands that play gothic / doom metal in the style that bands like The Gathering, Pyogenesis, Paradise Lost did in the 90s. It's my favourite kind of music but all the artists that made it either split up or moved away from the style. I would like to support some current bands, if there are any, that still play it.

I'd like something with actual melodies, not just downtuned slow riffs and walls of sound. Also, I'm not that much into bands that get labeled as gothic just because they got a soprano as a vocalist.

I know some bands like PL still make music but I find their latest records to be lacking something, maybe it's the production, or maybe they focus too much on heaviness instead of the raw emotion of their earlier works.

Some albums I like, for reference:

The Gathering - Always
Pyogenesis - Ignis Creatio
Paradise Lost - Gothic
Theatre of Tragedy - Aegis
Lacuna Coil - In a Reverie
Tristania - Widow's Weeds
Septic Flesh - Esoptron
Evereve - Stormbirds
Moonspell - Irreligious
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Left Hand Solution - Fevered

Thanks in advance!

Heavenwood (Portugal) definitely do carry some heavy influences of especially Paradise Lost. They certainly do have some heavy riffing, too, but there's loads of melody-work going on. Maybe too modern-sounding, but go give them a try.

We agree on that. Sadly, this is a genre is escheat. Very, very few heirs to hold the flame.

I suggest you give a try to Night Gaunt from Italy - they sit between epic doom and gothic. They made clear their dept to post-punk recently with a Fields of the Nephilim's cover.:

Cebren Khal from France (disbanded I think):

Cadaveria from Italy:

from italy too (And you thought this was sunny land), OPERA IX (same female singer as in Cadaveria) might worth being investigated, they do have doom songs, but not that many: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVx7Nv9RUS8

You might like:

Draconian (Sweden). Specifically, the albums Sovran and Under A Godless Veil, as they have a much better female vocalist (or one more suited to the music anyway). Very much gothic doom, not the type you said you're not into.
Swallow the Sun (Finland).
Shores of Null (Italy).
