Not sure exactly what other styles you're into. If you would list them, I could get it more exact for you.

Here's the best/required IMHO:

Gluey Porch Treatments
Bullhead
Eggnog EP
Lysol
Stoner Witch
Hostile Ambient Takeover
The Maggot
The Bootlicker
(A) Senile Animal

If you like GPT and Bullhead, pick up Ozma too
If you like Stoner Witch pick up Houdini
If you like Stoner Witch and Hostile Ambient Takeover, pick up Stag
If you like Hostile Ambient Takeover and The Maggot, pick up Pigs of the Roman Empire
If you like (A) Senile Animal and The Bootlicker, pick up Nude With Boots

If you only want to start with one, make it either Bullhead, Stoner Witch, or (A) Senile Animal.

I wouldn't really say that any are to avoided because they aren't good, but there are some that wouldn't bea good introduction:

Collossus of Destiny: live album which is mostly one long noise jam
Prick: extremely experimental, lots of noise/found sound songs
Honky: one of their most distant, coldest albums. An acquired taste.

Any questions? I'm a Melvins nut, so I can probably help. Let me know what other sorts of music you like, and I'll make it more focused.

Well.. any albums that are just good. I mainly wanted to check out The Melvins because of the influence they had on sludge metal. I've heard some stuff from the first album and The album with B.Lustmord, but I haven't heard anything else other than random songs.

Sludgiest ones would be Lysol, Bullhead, and certain songs on Hostile Ambient Takeover.

If you like dark, heavy, but not necessarily sudgy, then definately get Honky and The Bootlicker as well.

The best of the rest (not that the above are necessarily better, just that they've already been mentioned.

Stoner Witch
Eggnog
Stag
Houdini
(A) Senile Animal.

When you say, "The first album," Do you mean Gluey Porch Treatments or 10 Songs (or 26 Songs, or, for that matter, 6 Songs)?

"Bullhead" remains my favorite, so I would recommend starting with that.

Yeah, I would have to second that if you want it slimmed all the way down to one album.

Stoner Witch, Houdini and (A) Senile Animal are probably the most accessible. That is to say, they aren't too all over the place and are pretty riffy.
