...if it exists...

I'm looking for good punk rock/crossover band who can be intense and angry as usual, but likes to add a little surprise twist but throwing in a smooth jazzy interlude.

Bascially, I'm looking for a band that sounds like Cynic, but replace the metal influences with punk.

The Clash's Sandinista was pretty weird, but not in a good way.
It did have some great songs on it though.

Sorry, I'm not much of a help haha

Can you define 'weird'?
As in, avant-garde weird, or parody weird?

At least you made a suggest, so at least you're doing something.

Uh, NoMeansNo? That's pretty much the only punk band I can think of that has a progressive / jazzy sound. It's pretty weird at time, they have a strange sense of humor but I think they fit quite well.

Edit: So after saying that I was in a NoMeansNo mood and was looking around on youtube for their videos, and stumbled upon this. You might like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7yB4wcOoy4

NomeansNo, despite the admittly crappy name, was awesome!
I just heard "It's Catching Up" and I can hear some jazz influences, which was what I was looking for [and the catchiness is always a plus!]. Even though it's not punky version of Cynic.

Thanks!

Edit: Naked City sounds like something Mike Patton would do...
Which is fine, but it's not what I'm aiming for.

The Subhumans album "From The Cradle To The Great" is quite progressive for a punk record. The title track is 16 minutes long. Not exactly what you're looking for, but you might enjoy it.

Weird as in sort of Pink Floyd-esque ambiance, tones, sounds, and weird musical effects. Lots of Marimbas, keyboards, vibes, and instruments not usually found in punk.
So yes, I'd say it's pretty avant-garde. Not in a very good way though.

Check out EA80, punk rock/hardcore punk with extremely varied/progressive/unusual touches.

I was coming in here to recommend Nomeansno but another band similar to them whom you might like would be Victims Family.

ALL and late Descendents (basically the same band with different vocalists)

Pop-Punk with a jazzy and progressive edge. Try ALLROYS REVENGE, ALLTOY SAVES and PERCOLATOR, the later stuff is more straightforward.

Not very jazzy, but Penetration sounds like they had some progressive influences, a few of the songs are metal too. I like the first album "Moving Targets" better, the second one is also good.

Youth Brigade (the California band, not the DC band) sounded pretty progressive, I would recommend their first album "Sound & Fury" and the songs off the "Someone Got Their Head Kicked In" compilation.

NoMeansNo actually covered Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" on their 2000 album One. Rob Wright added vocals & lyrics, but it stays fairly true to the original. That same album also includes "A Little Too High", which is quite unhinged.

The drummer, John Wright, was jazz trained in high school, though he is NOT a jazz fan. Rob has had phases where all he listened to was Miles Davis in the tour van, so if there's any real jazz influence on the band, it'd come from there. They do make one of the more impressive rhythm sections of any band considered "punk". In my opinion, they simply do their own thing and it's only punk because they're very much a DIY band to this day.

Oh, and for metal credibility, Gene Hoglan is a fan. Spotted him at a show once in Vancouver a few years back. The man is...unmistakable.

Another album worth checking out is Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime. It's very possibly one of the finest records of the 80s, regardless of genre. This, of course, was back when punk wasn't so rigid in styles and bands could sound incredibly different and still be punk. Mike Watt and George Hurley again make up one of the best rhythm sections you'll ever hear.

ALL/Descendents certainly have their moments, but it was unfortunate they kinda went the poppunk route later on because they were far too talented to limit themselves like that. I think metal fans might enjoy ALL's Pummel album, though.

There were some early 80s SST bands that tried incorporating more jazzy influences. Saccharine Trust comes to mind, but I just never could get into their trip.

But yeah, I'd say go give Bitches Brew a download as well as "A Little Too High". Also check out "Big Dick", which is a track with just bass guitar, drums and singing.

Crass always took their musical cues from Rimbaud's avant-garde/jazz interests back when they were all just a communal family. Yes Sir, I Will sounds to me like free jazz played with punk æsthetic, and a couple metallic sounding riffs to round it out (albeit played on bass). And their swan song, aptly titled 10 Notes On A Summer's Day - The Swan Song is complete prog/jazz/punk weirdness.

You could try Otis: http://www.myspace.com/otis-band
They play some sort of hardcore (80 style) and do have jazz parts (more like ZU).

ZU is mind blowing, but they're something I think are best experienced live. And if possible, several nights in a row so you can catch onto everything that's going on.

At some point, ZU will finally release their collaboration with Mr. Wrong (Rob from Nomeansno). That'll also bend minds into twisted forms.

NoFX is alright, but I remember a song having a very good guitar solo.

I'm not too keen on the trumpet based jazz, I like the more guitar and bass jazz, and piano too. (Since I like T. Monk)
