Need help finding some bands similar to Murmuure (Fra). Looking for a blend of noise/black metal/ambient that is still somewhat melodic and not overwhelming.
Here is an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOWgOK7T ... re=related (Go to the 2:40 mark where it starts the drums come in)

Reminded me of The Ruins of Beverast's song Deser Lair somewhat.

Even though this isn't what I am looking for, this is a fantastic find. Great stuff.
Maybe I should try with a different description - I am looking for ambient black metal with some psychadelic or noisy electronic touches.

Any folky Cascadian/US black metal like Panopticon's Kentucky? Doesn't have to be bluegrass and American folk. Wolves In The Throne Room with some tin whistles thrown in would suffice. Nothing too gimmicky in a Korpiklaani way though.

Zyklon - Psyklon Aeon

This is the only blackend death metal band I liked, most of the black/death metal fusion stuff out there are utter garbage.

I am offended. . .

I have not listened to this album in a while but I remember Diabolicum's "Dark Blood Rising" being an enjoyable listen similar to Aborym, check them out to see what you think.

Looking for good riff-based, mid-tempo black metal in the vein of Samael's Blood Ritual. There can be some faster moments too but I'd like it to keep mid-to-slow tempo most of the time and if possible some Celtic Frost influences as Samael had. I'm already familiar with plenty of riff-based black metal like Root, Master's Hammer, Mortuary Drape and most of the big names of greek black metal (Necromantia, Varathron, Zemial, Agatus, Rotting Christ etc.). From these I'd say Varathron comes closest to what I'm looking for except for the epic and nwobhm-like leads and lovecraftian atmosphere. And please no straight black/thrash.

Mmmmm, this is probably my favorite style of black metal. You already listed off most of the standard faves that we all worship so I'm gonna throw a few more obscure things out there and see what sticks:

If you dig early Root and Master's Hammer there is a pretty strong chance you're going to enjoy Tudor. They're a younger band that came up in that same Czech scene with the godlike aforementioned two. The first two demos and first album are what you want, depending on how raw you want things. The two demos pepper in speedy moments a little more often, whereas Bloody Mary is midpaced through nearly the entire album. Some really catchy riffs though, you can tell they were hugely influenced by Blackie's early style with Root. NWN! just recently released the first two demos in a 2CD compilation called "Ultra Black Metal". Their stuff shouldn't be hard to find either downloading or purchasing.

Now onto the little brothers of Master's Hammer: Amon Goeth. I linked directly to the album that I think would suit you best. I haven't heard the debut in years but I'm sure its in a similar vein, if maybe a bit less developed. The Worship is a complete masterpiece though. I think you'll hear almost instantly how similar it sounds to Ritual. This one is definitely on the speedier side of midpaced, but if you love Ritual and The Jilemnice Occultist it should be a hit.

What about Barathrum from Finland? Really bass heavy and midpaced. Legions of Perkele would probably be a good jumping off point. Their first two albums are pretty much just pure atmosphere via a disgusting bass-drenched sound, but on Legions of Perkele everything tightened up, and the production isn't quite so suffocating, the whole thing is more "rocking" if you will. Every song is catchy as hell, just pick one at random to sample on YT and I think you'll get the idea.

Anael's first album Necromantic Rituals is pure Samael worship. I haven't heard it in a few years because I never found a physical copy but I remember being very impressed with this, and how much they nailed that "ritualistic procession in motion" midpaced sound that Samael was so good at.

I don't need help, but has anyone else noticed that Aeternus's "Beyond the wandering moon" is a black'n'roll album? Bluesy in parts, even. I think Glorior Belli nibbed a few riffs this.

Glorior Belli makes some damn good bluesy 'progressive' black metal. My favorite song by them is In Every Grief Stricken Blues. But no, I actually haven't noticed about Aeternus, I'll have to go back and listen again.

That's the exact song that appropriated a few Aeternus riffs. :)

I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but I find it very amusing.

maybe I should've clarified, because in a lot of ways that could count for every black metal band in existence. . . .
I meant something that is clearly melodic, but not quite straight up melodic black metal (Naglfar or Dark Fortress) that includes a lot of minor chord riffs and harmonizers.

Ragnarok and Setherial are two great choices, but have you checked out albums by the German band Nagelfar (thats NagELfar as opposed to Sweden's NaGLfar..lol), specifically the album Virus West. But as far as current bands go, and also from Germany, Der Weg einer Freiheit (http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Der_Weg_einer_Freiheit/3540275159) have absolutely blown my mind. Melodic without trying to be 'pretty', fast as hell, and at times fantastic atmosphere. I'm a 33yr old that's been into black metal since 1994, and I haven't been this stoked on a black metal band, especially an up and coming one, in a LONG time. You really can't go wrong with any one of their 3 recordings they have out.

...IMO of course. :-D

haha thats cool man, I'd be happy to oblige. I have to admit though, aside from the more folky/Pagan/Viking themed blackened bands, I am a bit out of the loop on straight up black metal these days. And quite honestly, it was because overall I was getting bored with the more recent stuff, be it new bands blatantly rehashing old bands, or the old established bands spinning their wheels and putting out the same old same old, OR the overabundance of that so-called "shoegaze black metal", which has cool moments, but still kinda 'meh' to me. Maybe it was the fact that a lot of these bands try so damn hard to prove they're 'evil/trve/kvlt/emotional/atmospheric/whatever', and to me it comes across as not being genuine, you know? DWEF (as I refer to them now, since I really don't feel like typing out the full name..lol) really struck me as a band that is really playing what they really want to play, no B S, and has really kicked me back into searching deep for good BM again.

Now that I totally derailed what this thread is supposed to be about, again, I would be happy to oblige and see if I could reccomend some stuff for you. haha

I don't know just what your industrial-to-black metal ratio is on these types of bands, but you may enjoy Savaoth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0Aou50rOjM

Also try Havoc Unit (what ...And Oceans became, basically), and Anaal Nathrakh.

I'll throw a couple at you and see if they stick:

Infinity from the Netherlands. Fairly generic, but not too bad.

Infernal. Blackmoon's band after the split with DF. Preeeety similar (no surprises there...).

Back to the Netherlands again with Funeral Winds.

Ummm... back to the Netherlands again, this time with a rather excellent band: Fluisterwoud, are quite good.

Unless you're aware of them, Finland's Azaghal are often loaded with minor key melodies...

These may not be exactly what you're after maybe though...

Of course! Alexander Van (Von?) Meilenwald was a big part of molding what I would become as a black metal drummer, ever since I first heard Nagelfar's 'Hünnengrab im Herbst' years ago (I bought it when the Century Media mailorder first picked it up, not long after it came out! It's the Kettenhund Records version!). Now I'm not saying you'll pick up one of my Bound By Entrails recordings and expect to hear AvM's style of drumming, mind you, as Im not that good..lol. But yeah, his approach to drumming made a BIG impact on me!

And furthermore, Nagelfar made a big impact on my view on Black Metal as well! 'Virus West' is one of top BM albums ever for me...hell all 3 albums are, but 'Virus West' specifically is the first one I grab when I need my Nagelfar fix these days. lol. Ruins ov Beverast is fantastic as well..and its funny, if you look at the Ván Records roster (its the label that reissued the Nagelfar albums in recent years), AvM has done session drums for literally all of them, for live shows.

There's so much good stuff on that label, you can't really go wrong. That sampler compilation you used to be able to d/l from their website was quite awesome...I haven't checked if that was still there or not.

Wasn't sure the best place to ask this, and thought I would piss off less people if I posted it in here rather than starting a new topic. Looking for a label (or distro) who primarily release black metal demos, and who are currently looking for bands to work with. I would prefer it if they were not UK based. Thanks.

I know that it's pretty typical to ask this, but Norwegian is my favorite scene. I am looking for classic, essential albums from 1991-1999, of course I have the groundbreaking albums of Immortal, Emperor, Burzum, Mayhem, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Enslaved, Dimmu Borgir, Ulver. I also have the less known but still very essential albums from bands like Troll, Covenant, Ancient, Borknagar, Fimbulwinter, Tartaros, Gehenna, Hades, Isengard and In The Woods... Are there still some albums I'm missing out?

Yes indeed. Have a look at the Nidrosian scene, Dosengel, Kaosritual, One Tail One Head, Mare, etc. In my opinion modern Norwegian black metal is better than it has ever been.

You need the first two Dodheimsgard albums, especially the first one. It's safe to ignore their other material.

I'd be surprised if you didn't enjoy Kvist. They were a little late to the scene to be remember as anything aside from "also-rans", but as far as those go they're one of my favorites. Kind of an idiosyncratic sound for the time, to be honest, they weren't afraid of some melodic riffs and I love that the bass is very upfront and sometimes leads the charge. Incredible drumming display as well, the guy knows how to blast but he also varies up his patterns and even works in some of the oft-shunned double bass.
