Hi, this is my inaugural post.

I was moved to register and post after hearing some soaring wah-wah pedal on one of the tracks on the new Watain record.

I'm all for it, but thought to myself that it would likely be frowned upon in some BM circles for aesthetic, or maybe even ideological reasons.

Can anyone let me know about/link to other instances in the world of BM that opt for the decadence of the Wah-Wah pedal?

Hello everyone, im looking for some recommendations. What im looking for is the most disturbing black metal. Im not gonna get real specific, just disturbing, terrifying black metal. Im fairly well versed in the genre and grew up with the classics.

deathspell omega - diabolus absconditus, no doubt. I'm not a post-shaxul DSO fan at all, but this song is pure terror, as if they tear holes into the very fabric of reality itself. mass grave aesthetics is also a great song, about the same length, and even though it doesn't reach diabolus absconditus's sheer intensity fully, it's still a more than worthwhile listen. and they were both re-released together on a 12".

their three songs on from the entrails to the dirt are also quite outstanding, but imo more because of the frantic vocals. the demo was in a way more "traditional", but those riffs are just in another league altogether. one of my fave demos of all time.

List off some good black metal albums related to war, please. Some examples I already know of are Vreid - Milorg and Skyforger - Latviešu strēlnieki. I know of Carach Angren - Where the Corpses Sink Forever and while that is one of my favorite albums I feel like straying away from the symphonic stuff today.

War's "We Are War" is about war.

If you don't mind your black with a massive crushing slice of death with it, then I wholeheartedly recommend Truppensturm - Fields of Devastation, but more importantly their second magnum opus Salute to the Iron Emperors. Bloody perfect.

Noktorn did a good job at describing it: it sounds like music from a world where WW2 never ended. Violent and very, very bleak!

then there's carthaun from germany, with more leanings to medieval/modern early times war. not sure about the musical quality though. not to my liking IIRC, but that was some years ago already.

Apparently Arkhtinn and Voidsphere, along with this band, are part of something called the Prava Kollektiv, and have some similarities; I've listened only to Mahr and Arkhtinn but keep coming back to the former. Definitely "event horizon" vibes in it.

So having heard of none of these, I'm listening to Mahr now and I don't really hear similarities to Darkspace, but this is actually a really cool album. I'm going to have to give this a couple more listens.

On to the requester's request: Battle Dagorath has a lot of faster passages that have some big Darkspace vibes, with the noticeable differences being the heavier emphasis on the keyboards and more overall melody. Still not sure if this is close enough, but I think it's closer.

PS: anyone saying Alrakis sounds similar to Darkspace needs to get banned.

Mahr is good. Darkspace songs begin with a dark atmospheric guitar wall of sound effect and then 5 minutes in turn into a riffy section which is carried on top of that wall of sound. I've just started listening to Mahr and so far I see the atmospheric effects. I'll have to wait and see if the riffs come. See this is what I like about Black Metal. It is very subtle.

Evil from Brazil have a lot of Burzum influence. I haven't listened to much of their discograpy, but I really enjoyed the split with Drowning the Light, the Hammerstorm album and the "Pure Black Evil" compilation.

Does anybody out there know of black metal bands who use vocal distortion? I'm looking for bands who use pitch-shifted demonic howling/screaming. Only band I know so far that does this is Battle Dagorath on their 'I - Dark Dragons of the Cosmos' album...

Gorgoroth pitch shifted Hat's vocals on "Pentagram" of course.

Black Tribe, Nachtgeblut, and Woods of Fallen all use digitized, distorted vocals which sound rather hellish if you ask me.

I'm looking for some really dark atmospheric black metal. I like Ruins of Beverast(really dark), Negura Bunger(not so dark I know), Darkspace(as dark as it gets) and lots of stuff from the Atmospheric Black Metal Albums channel on youtube.

Can someone recommend something. Actually, I was just checking out random recommendations on this thread and liked quite a few of the recs. Can someone recommend some generic stuff as well apart form the atmospheric stuff maybe in the line of Judas Iscariot or YGG(from Ukraine).

One of my top albums of 2017. A perfectly, carefully crafted slab of dark artistic vision in black metal form. Stunning.

Aversio HUmanitatis - Longing for the Untold

Another 2017 gem that remained hidden from me until earlier this year. Dissonant, atmospheric darkness from Spain.

Almyrkvi - Pupil of the Searing Maelstrom

Another excellent Icelandid atmospheric act. Haven't got the new album Unmbra yet, but the first EP is outstanding.

Azelisassath - Evil Manifestations Against Mankind

Straight forward, raw yet atmospheric Swedish darkness. Has a feel of it's own.

Christicide

Can't recommend this band enough. Brutal yet atmospheric in the way the twisting, writhing riffs really drag you under in a blissful trance. The debut and Upheaval of the Soul are highly recommended.

This album might already be known to you as it's quite a few years old now (need to get the new album), but as far as crushing dark atmosphere goes within black metal, this is a minor masterpiece in my opinion. Total fucking darkness!!

The Black

Alongside Death is a damn good raw atmospheric monster of a record. Very dark and much better than the very early debut.

Instinct

This virtually unheard of UK black metal act creates some serious darkness. I have their Albion record which has only two song pushing thirty minutes, but this track from a compilation (I think) is amazing.

Not heard everything in the list but love what I heard so far. Will update soon and be back with more requests.

Already know them. Didn't really enjoy them, but thanks for the tip.

Contemplating this further I have remembered that Hurusoma and Endless Dismal Moan also have distorted, digital, demonic vokills. Quite intimidating.

Not pitch shift but some kind of weird tin can distortion was used on Celebratum's sophomore album Instinct. They're an insanely boring band, I should add -- just the only one I can think of who mess with the vocals like that.
