I'd like a recommendation for excellent BM demos. Preferably something close to Moonblood or Paysage d'Hiver

Excellent BM demos? Try these:

Old Man's Child - In The Shades Of Life
Ulver - Vargnatt
Carpathian Forest - Bloodlust And Perversion
Enslaved - Yggdrasil
Emperor - Emperor/Wrath Of The Tyrant
Mayhem - Deathcrush

Less obvious ones, maybe.

Ya'all MUST take a listen to The Third Eye Rapists, from Sweden. Brilliant stuff, chaotic and evil as shit!

Great recommendation! Wulkanaz is great stuff too. Discovered that some months ago.

Their only release, Triumph Through Spears of Sacrilege, is some of the most brutal music I have ever heard. They achieved something in 19 minutes that few have done over the course of several albums. Pure, relentless, chaotic hatred.

In regards to black metal, I´m a purist. I don´t like polished productions and I´m not looking for showmanship in the vein of Watain at all.

After not listening to it for quite some years, I rediscovered Forgotten Woods´ ´As The Wolves Gather´. I´m looking for bands that also create a foresty, nocturnal atmosphere.

I'm looking for something specific, but it's hard for me to describe in terms of musical technique. something in the vein of this demo (fluisteraars - t'hondslog):

I like the kind of muffled dynamics (if that makes sense), the almost laid back riffing here, which is yet full of intricate melodies. big plus if it is a rehearsal recording/feels like a live band playing.

That's a great demo, indeed. I consider Fluisteraars one of the best black metal acts from my country. I’m not sure in how far I can recommend demos that sound exactly like that, but I know for a fact that it was quite a bit inspired by early Ulver.

Other Dutch black metal you might like (in case you don’t know these yet), but is not exactly similar:
Solar Temple – Rays Of Brilliance
Turia – Dor
Turia – Dede Kondre
Iskandr – Heilig Land
Iskandr – Zon
Lubbert Das – Keye
Lubbert Das – Deluge
All these contain a specific person, that has a nack for writing great black metal.

Sort of a meme question but here it is: Any of you could recommend an album similar to Mgla's With hearts toward none?
https://youtu.be/fF3eZfV2dI4
It is BM, but not of the classical norwegian sense. I am after some stuff with better production quality and a bitter/aggressive edge.. something more proactive in a way, melodic with a militant edge.
When listening to this album actually Dissection - although far more romantic / epic - comes to my mind in these regards, so it is that common DNA that I am after..
I hope you get the idea.

After some search Uada soundwise kinda seems to fit the bill, but goddamn they look like a tribute band :D
The music I could forgive (hell its what Im after) but the uniformized leather jacket/hoodie/secret identity thing is far too much.

Is Arckanum's ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ too much of a stretch?

I don't hear it. Especially regarding the militant edge. I'd recommend Kriegsmaschine.

I agree. Catchy black metal, that's it. I like Mgla up to 'With Heart Toward None'. I just think the fashion show is tiring.

I need a rec to hear something similar to a raw melodic bm album. A sound that is close to Nattens Madrigal. Feel free to suggest Demos and compilations by the way.

Looking for stuff which sounds like Amon Amarth, heavy on those long tremolo riffs composed from same length notes (the "2WBM" riffs) coupled with a slower pace on the snare drum.

Like eg Death in Fire from 2:40

I know Dismember has some songs like that, also Malevolent Creation, but not enough x)

I guess some black metal with good production (clear sound of riffs) and slower snare drumming would fit too.. Actually Mayhem De mysteriis clones would work..

You're probably looking for something like later Immortal or Abbath's solo album.

So I noticed that Shatraug has an overwhelming amount of bands he's involved with and of those I'm only familiar with of course Sargeist and Horna.

Anyone care to give me a rundown of some of the other bands and which ones are worth exploring / where to start? Out of the two I definitely prefer Sargeist's sound if that's any help. Thanks.

Mortualia are pure quality if you are into depressive black, and they are better than 99% of the bands of their kind.

You can find some of the best and bleakest riffs Shatraug ever did in their first album :)

to be honest, I find most of his other bands largely forgettable (especially sinisterite). the only other worthwhile one is vordr, who are really an acquired taste though, and gandr, who are somewhat similar to vordr, i.e. fast, relentless, almost hysterical punkish black metal with a strong sense of rhythm.

Black Stench is largely rubbish, but don't miss out on this song, Blood is the Way. It's likely the most depressive song Shatraug has ever made.

Mortualia is good, but he's mostly poured his good stuff into Horna and Sargeist.

Listening to Wild, Wild Misery now (I like starting with the newest material and working my way backwards for bands new to me) and this is quite excellent. The riffs and tone definitely strikes a Let the Devil In chord for me (just at a much slower pace). Thanks for the rec.

Not a fan of punk influences in BM... I get it, but just don't enjoy it. LOL you have me interested in Sinisterite now though... what are they about?

Yes, very bleak and quite stripped back. I mentioned in my previous post I'm enjoying Mortualia a lot. Not easy to sit through the whole thing at once, but it's quality!

Quote:

I had a feeling this may have been the case... I don't know how he's able to sustain so many projects and be able to separate them during the songwriting process! I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the material from the other bands were originally ideas for Sargeist/Horna that never saw the light of day... essentially leftovers.

Really depends on what Vordr album. It also has hypnotic Urfaustian stuff.

I was speaking mainly of I, which is also by far their best release in my book. I haven't followed them much after III. what's their more urfaust-like material?

this doesn't really consider your request, but is a list of some excellent BM demos anyway.

grausamkeit - pink green 666, stardust, also the helveterich compilation
sorhin - i fulmanens dystra sken
some vlad tepes demos
armageddon (ger) - grievous (!)
primigenium - as eternal as the night
fluisteraars - t'hondslog
absurd - thuringian pagan madness (feels like a demo anyway)
arkona - bogowie
ildjarn - s/t
nazxul - s/t
evilfeast demo
