Does anybody out there know of black metal bands who use vocal distortion? I'm looking for bands who use pitch-shifted demonic howling/screaming. Only band I know so far that does this is Battle Dagorath on their 'I - Dark Dragons of the Cosmos' album...

Hate Forest's Scythia demo has a bit of this. Hard to actually tell if they're distorted or not due to the production quality, but they definitely sound like it when compared to their later stuff.

Anna von Hauswolff. But it is not black metal.

It's exactly what he decribed with lots of keybords, gothic elements and stuff. Thx a lot.

Tried multiple google searches and was getting nowhere.

I was told to check out this thread for my question.

I'm looking for non-satanic black metal bands. I would prefer Melodic/Symphonic and regular black metal. None of that NSBM either, nor Unblack/White Metal. Just black metal bands that sing about anything else. For reference i'm looking for bands like Duskmourn, Vallendusk, Stormlord, Xanthochroid, Sworn, Iskald, Bal-Sagoth, Carach Angren. So anything like those bands, singing about norse mythology, nature, HP Lovecraft, etc. Just anything that isn't satanic but still black metal.

Lunar Aurora and Nasheim are some of my biggest favourites. The Ruins of Beverast as well, but they're not very much black metal musically.

If you like Vallendusk check out Pure Wrath https://purewrath.bandcamp.com/album/ascetic-eventide

Really solid Atmo BM from Indonesia, well worth your time.

The Axis Of Perdition sing about non-satanic stuff, namely the Silent Hill games and also about Lovecraft. But not sure it will be your cup of tea. You said that you like melodic/symphonic black, and TAOP play a mixture of industrial black and dark ambient.

But it can't hurt to check them out on Youtube, here is the link to their most popular album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofi1QXHioUU&t=1917s

Would Immortal be considered non-satanic black metal?

Can someone recommend me some black metal like Watain's Lawless Darkness? Watain seems to get a lot of hate but I really like the riffs they use on this album (it's also present on some of their other albums but not pulled off quite as well IMO). I want to say it's kind of punk-y? I'm having trouble putting my finger on what it is exactly but I think it's often a slightly slower pace with the power chords (letting them ring out more) + churning, abrasive but not dissonant melodies. More than anything though it's just a certain feel.

To give an example from other bands:

Emperor - Into The Infinity Of Thoughts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tccZs_veliA (see 3:03-3:50 especially and the riff at 5:30-5:45)

Ork Bastards - Cold and Ruined Stones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBbtoq0iMnA (this has the "feel" although it's more thrashy)

Also I think Emperor's cover of Funeral Fog is a good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPZ4I0i9ZCI

Destroyer 666 and Ravencult have some similar elements as well but aren't quite in the same sweet spot.

Valkyrja
i'd say they're probably the band that sounds the most like Watain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts4FKJmtYDs

Ondskapt
not as close to Watain as the guys above, but i think the guitars have a similar approach to what you describe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_qmQoTgIg4

Avslut
They sound more like Dark Funeral, but there's some similarities to Watain as well,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOIgIkeQ9lY&t=80s - cannot stress enough how much i love this album, to me, one of the best BM releases in recent years

Looks like nobody responded to you yet, but I'm permanently in search of Branikald and Forest-style music. I'd also like any recommendations anyone has.

I would guess you probably already know Walknut and maybe Ygg, both of which are good and reminiscent of BBH.

From the US, my absolute favorite is Sanguine Eagle and their Individuation demo. Really incredible music. There's also Lascowiec who seem to be even more directly influenced by BBH. They have a ton of releases and from what I've heard, the quality varies a bit. I like their Asgard Mysteries compilation and Unbroken Spirit. You might find something you like in there.

The MOST similar-to-Darkspace band would be Paysage d'Hiver, which is another project from the same musician. So this might be an obvious recommendation, but if you haven't heard any of his work you should check it out. My favorites are Winterkalte and Das Tor but he has a lot of albums and I haven't worked my way through all of them. Some of his albums are completely ambient non-metal pieces, which is not usually what I'm looking for but I enjoy them when I'm in the mood.

I'm looking for stuff like Wigrid, both the ambient and metal songs. I've been checking out some dungeon synth and ambient black metal type stuff, but haven't quite found what I'm looking for. A lot of the ambient black metal is still too aggressive or just not dark/depressing/relaxing enough.

Anything completely ambient similar to this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ei1f6yXHWUQ

Ambient metal similar to this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6jmGHnQlso

Neither of these songs have drums, but drums are fine as Wigrid has them in most songs.

I'm looking for some dirge-y (almost waltz-like) black metal in the vein of the slower Beastcraft songs, particularly "Deathcraft and Necromancy"

So the first thing I could think up was the song "Blood Covered Moon of Varcolaci" by Drowning the Light. Not all of his other material is like this, but it's a recent example and does have the same feel as that Beastcraft song.

Hmm, interesting. I did listen to a few of their songs in the past and this definitely sounds way different. Feels much more Summoning-inspired. Thanks!

It's not bad overall though I'm not a huge a fan of the vocals. High-pitched growls rarely work for me. (The vocals issue pretty much ruined The Body for me, which is a band I really wanted to like cause I dig their aesthetic.)

Its not the easiest thing to track down, but First Journey, by Widder from Holland. It has that ambient black metal sound you are looking for. I got the cassette from a label called Heidens Hart located in Holland. Really good stuff!

I will check out Sanguine Eagle, as sceptic as I am about USBM. Thank you. Never heard of Lascowiec (Polish?). Thanks again!

My recommendations are based on stuff that you might like if you also like Wigrid.

Are you familiar with:

-Trist
-Nyktalgia
-Paysage d'Hiver
-Vinterriket?

Just stating the obvious names here. I have no idea about your knowledge in black metal.

^Used to listen to Vinterriket YEARS ago, can't believe they are still around, will check out newer stuff.
I've checked out Trist before, but it's been awhile and I've seen Nyktalgia, but haven't listened much. Trist has a nice sized discography despite being split up.

Paysage D'hiver rules, I would be a horrible person if I didn't know about him ;) Haven't actually listened to much since Das Tor though...

Selvhat I came across this little gem of a musician who's been dead for about 10 years now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99yPA7K5MCA

Sentimen Beltza is another band that fits somewhere in between the Paysage D'hiver, Drudkh and Wigrid category I think

and Make a Change... Kill Yourself is a band I've always hated based on band name alone, but they actually sound kinda decent.

Good taste, my man.

Carved Cross plays slow, dirge-like, brutally depressing black metal:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQtnQPrxa0Q

If you're open to something more dissonant, Brown Jenkins is amazing. Their album Death Obsession is almost entirely comprised of slow-midpaced dissonant arpeggios:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsZofqAAusw

Also, this band Acolytes of Moros is doom, but it sounds somewhat similar (in the guitar tone, harsh vocals, and black metal-y melodies) and definitely has a melancholy atmosphere:

You can check out Misticismo, from Chile, raw black metal influenced by finnish acts like Sargeist, Behexen, Horna, etc... mixed with the nowadays personal treat of south american perspective.

https://misticismo.bandcamp.com/album/terraria

They recently released their first album. Great Work imo.

I personally don't feel South-American/Brazilian black metal. I already have some issues with black metal from outside of Europa. Of course with exceptions, as Australian, some USBM, etcetera.

Are there any bm bands that have a precise similarity to Nokturnal Mortum? I don't want any folk or symphonic elements please. Maybe something like Ygg. I need recs for Anaal Nathrakh too.

I guess something that has a epic viking, pagan vibe. Graveland's Following The Voice Of Blood comes to my mind. It's been a while since I listened to Ygg but I do remember the band not having any folk elements to my understanding. However, it's been a year of two since I've heard Ygg's album so you're probably right.

Hope that somehow helps

Huh, the folk/symphonic elements are what gave Nokturnal Mortum and the other Ukranian pagan black metal acts like Khors, Kroda, and Munruthel their charm though.

Maybe try Havukruunu from Finland? Sorta like faster Moonsorrow minus the keyboards.

Bit of a silly request here, but I'm looking for any bm albums that are aesthetically centered around spring/summertime/green nature - it doesn't even have to be explicitly 'about' these things lyrically or whatever, just albums that capture the feeling of being alone in the woods to you or songs that bring to mind an ocean shore or late night thundershowers, the same way so much black metal is aesthetically obsessed with invoking winter. What albums, songs or bands do this for you guys? all sub-genres welcome. thank you

edit: also I'm aware there's already a 'summer-y' request thread posted but I'm looking for strictly black metal so I figured posting this here would be ok too?

Spite Extreme Wing's last album Vltra always gave me a warm, meditative, summer-y kind of feeling.
The songs are varied, but i highly suggest it

Also the songs "and the wind shall scream my name" and "the castaway" by Stormlord really capture the feeling of sea, you may be interested

Certainly obvious, but Antaeus?

Still a decent rec. :P

Sear Bliss should be right up your alley. The rock leads and unusual inclusion of a trumpet gives their work a very warm and bright feel fitting for your request. Can start with the first album.

This is absolutely perfect. The fact that it's realtively old school makes it even better. Thank you.

Hey one more request guys because I have basicbitch black metal taste....I am in dire need of good, obscure black metal albums that are simultaneously atmospheric and raw as hell.Specifically, something with absolutely zero keyboards and as little acoustics/ambience as possible - but still captures that meditative, otherworldly mood without sacrificing brutality or intensity. Lofi and shitty production jobs are ok by me. One-man albums even better. The closest stuff I can think of to this would be the sounds of Erraunt, Witch In Her Tomb, Forest, Horrid Cross, Orgy of Carrion, etc. sorry to blow this thread up with requests :/
