the only band with a female vocalist that I can think of off the top of my head is Awaiting The Autopsy. you probably won't like them though.

Blood Ceremony, nice 70's influenced Doom. And also REZ Band, although they are not very metal, that woman knows how to ROCK.

Meza Virs is a pretty good gothic symphonic black/death metal band. The female vocals are clean, but there are also harsh vocals by another vocalist.

Chastain with Leather Leone is a serious contender, especially the first two albums. Zed Yago deserves some credit as well.

The 3rd and the Mortal, especially the album Tears Laid in Earth. Excellent gothic/doom metal that doesn't cross the line into cheesiness.

Also, I would recommend Acid King, if you like stoner/doom/sludge type of stuff. Lori's vocals sound similar to Ozzy, but with a slightly creepier, more disturbing quality to them.

This band is local to me and I'm friends with several of the band members so it's very cool to see them being mentioned, but I think Amanda is the lamest part of the band.

Most female vocalists in metal are complete crap. Adorior, Holy Moses, Doro/Warlock, Detente, Znowhite, and few others are the exceptions.

If you want to listen to female vocals with "heavier" music listen to HEART!

Dylath-Leen is good from what little I have heard, although they are a bit similar to Arch Enemy but alot better.

Probably not what your looking for, but imo, it fits the title of the thread.

No Light This City recs? For shame. :nono: Anyway, definetly check out Light This City, their 4th and 3rd albums are the best, after that try their 2nd, and you could try their debut, but it's not as good as the others.

Thank you. I have "Sirens," and it is one hell of a release. I only wish they didn't use a drum machine on that album. Takes me out of it sometimes.

Although the vocals are more 50/50 male and female, I strongly recommend In The Woods... if you might enjoy gothic/black metal with really heavy 70's psychedelic influence. As of their second album they dropped harsh vocals entirely (other than like two screams an album).

Try Omnio and I also strongly recommend their live album Live at the Caledonien Hall. The live album is where the female vox really take off.

Seriously check them out, this is coming from someone who for the most part can't tolerate female vocals in metal (or maybe Nightwish just ruined them for me) and was completely awed by these guys.

Necrosadistic Goat Torture..Death/Black Metal from the UK seen at last years Bloodstock.

Matriarch..Death Metal from South America (Brazil/Columbia/one of those places.)

Sungoddess Black Metal from Japan, sadly on hiatus since Gallhammer stole their limelight, and their single Demo has been the only thing released by them so far.

Puerto Rico isn't in South America. It's a U.S. territory.

Anyway, Melodic Death/Black Metal.

The Agonist and Straight Line Stitch both have female fronted vocalists who do a combo of both clean and growls.

There's also Wikked Wisdom which, I shit you not, is fronted by Jada Pinket Smith, Will Smith's Wife. But honestly, they havn't impressed me.

Moonshine, the sludgy doom band from Baltimore is pretty neat. Good vocals too, they sound super vicious with a few clean sections incorporated into the music as well.

I've spent the best part of my 'metal life' listening to female-fronted stuff [yes I know, I know] and here are the top bands that I'd recommend, in no order.

Atrox [up to Orgasm] - especially Orgasm
Tristania [up to World of Glass] - esp. Widow's Weeds
Forgotten Silence - esp. KaBaAch
Moon of Steel - esp. Insignificant Details
Catafalque - esp. Dialectique
Lumsk - esp. Åsmund Frægdegjevar

Honourable album mentions [but inconsistent discographies] go to:

Naamah - Resensement
Todesbonden - Sleep Now, Quiet Forest [well, they only have one album out so far but it's a good one]
The Gathering - Mandylion
Sirenia - At Sixes and Sevens
Moonlight - Audio 136
After Forever - Decipher
Aesma Daeva - Here Lies One Whose Name Was Written in Water
Theatre of Tragedy - Aégis

That'll do.

some of these are a mixture of male and female vocals but here goes:

Luna Obscura (death doom)
Draconian (gothic dioom)
Ambeon, progressive ambient
Stream of Passion, progressive/symponic
Atargatis, esymphononic
Estatic fear, symphonic doom
How like a winter, symphonic doom
Krypteria, symphonic/power
edenbridge, symphonic/power
leaves eyes, symphonic
Lunatica, symphonic
Magica, symphonic power
midnattsol (only second album is listenable), symphonic, folk
lacuna coil, gothic
sirenia, gothic
tristania, gothic
tarja turnunen, symphonic
theater of tragedy, gothic/doom
trail of tears, gothic
visions of atlantis, symphonic power
warlock, heavy metal
within temptation & the metropole orchestra (a million times better than any of their albums), gothic/symphonic

The topic title specifies "female-fronted metal that isn't shit" rather than just making a list of bands.

Atargatis are pretty rubbish [bad vocals, boring songs], Estatic Fear is a very acquired taste, Magica and VoA are horrendously cheesy, Midnattsol is flat and most of Lacuna Coil and Sirenia's output - especially the recent stuff - is really sugary. Your list does have some good bands but mostly makes an example of why female-fronted metal has a bad reputation.

Triosphere are a modernish trad metal band with a decent female vocalist.

well i really like all of them, but I will cut it down to the best ones then

Luna Obscura (death doom)
Draconian (gothic dioom)
Ambeon, progressive ambient
How like a winter, symphonic doom
edenbridge, symphonic/power
leaves eyes, symphonic
theater of tragedy, gothic/doom
warlock, heavy metal
within temptation & the metropole orchestra (a million times better than any of their albums), gothic/symphonic

If you are looking for something really different start with Ambeon

I'm surprised unExpect hasn't been mentioned yet. Their second album, In a Flesh Aquarium, is some of the weirdest shit I've ever heard. Not sure if there are enough femal vocals among the death growls and shouting to make it female-fronted, but it's close enough.

I came across a female fronted band called Vainglory a while back. They have kind of a power/thrash sound.

Fuck The Facts and Bulletbelt are both really good, although only Bulletbelt's second album was female-fronted.

Another here in support of Warlock. "Triumph and Agony" as well as "Hellbound" are both amazing. Chastain is also in that traditional heavy metal vibe but more gritty so far as vocals go.

They're harsh vocalists, but these other two bands are definitely worth a listen too:

Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult and Abnormality (USA)
