I'm looking for 60s metal similar to Neil Young and Bob Dylan. Don't say Black Sabbath or Blue Cheer because I consider them 70s metal.

Before 1970 there were only a few songs that could be considered proto-metal, such as "Helter Skelter" or "Communication Breakdown", but no albums or bands dedicated to the genre.

Uh, Heavy Metal more or less started in late '60 and early '70.

They are the first heavy metal bands. Metal did not exist before them.

Blue Cheer's debut was in '68 so your logic is flawed in that respect, also they're not metal. Neither Neil Young nor Bob Dylan have ever released anything that could even be considered proto metal.

First, I didn't say they were metal. If I ask for metal that sounds like vikings sailing through icy waters i'm not implying that vikings sailing through icy waters are metal, am I?

Secondly, Neil Young's Cinnamon Girl is at least as metal as some songs by Blue Cheer or Sabbath.

Try some psychadelia like Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, or Deep Purple. Machine Head is an excellent proto-metal album.

Clear Light is a group you should check out. Their fuzz guitar was blistering in it's distortion for back then. Fever Tree is another such act.

But, I have to recommend Link Wray. Link Wray (Actually started in 59, but close enough) is THE FIRST glimmering of heavy metal and punk rock. Also, the great old' Iron Butterfly, Cream, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Jimi Hendrix, etc. which you probably already knew.

link wrays's "rumble" was truly ahead of its time. killer early rock with some nasty rudimentary guitar work. all the bands you list all began as psychedelic bands that morphed/changed as time went on. Crazy world of arthur brown is killer and became the Atomic Rooster band from england.Should mention "high tide" here as a early metal/rock band. sir lord baltimore is another.

Seems like a troll to me, but you can't deny Hendrix when it comes to heavier 60s music. The man was a genius.

This is true however, Machine Head was released in 72. You would have to listen to their first two albums, Shadows of Deep Purple - (which is mostly covers and includes a rendition of Kentucky Woman which IS a Neil Diamond song - and their Self Titled album. By some weird reasoning, Neil Diamond is a factor in influencing the early period of Deep Purple.

Although everyone here knows it, Cream were also a relatively important band at that time who released music in the 60's. Their importance is no to be overlooked. Steppenwolf I also consider to be an early version of proto-proto-metal. There really were not a whole lot of bands playing riffy music in this era.

Youre best bet would be to look at who the earliest bands, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Uriah Heep, etc were influenced by and then research them a bit however you are going to mostly come upon a lot of British Invasion stuff and bluesy, jazz material. You could also skip the first few "metal" bands and look into the influences of bands that appeared in the mid70's such as Priest, Scorpions and Thin Lizzy. That might also give some direction for your searching.

There's really nothing metal at all about Neil Young or Bob Dylan besides 'Cinnamon Girl' having a slightly Blue Cheeresque riff.

Anyway, some protometal bands I've grown to like.

High Tide - Se Shanties (way ahead of it's time in '68
Night Sun - Mournin' (pretty heavy for it's time)
Birth Control - Hoodoo Man
Rag I Ryggen - Rag I Ryggen (awesome heavy Norwegian prog, Uriah Heep style)
Toad - Toad (heavy guitar tone)
Yesterday's Children - Yesterday's Children
Buffalo - Volcanic Rock (70s, but very heavy)
Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come (an obvious one)
Black Feather - Mountains of Madness

Guitarists Randy Holden and Tiger B. Smith might be worth looking out for aswell.

Really, there's lots of this stuff. Around '68 bands were combining amplifier worship, heavier riffs, progressive leanings, mythological lyrics, and in 1970 Black Sabbath perfected it with an extra dosage of darkness. Don't get me wrong, most of these bands aren't metal, many sound like a lighter Black Sabbath, a heavier Jethro Tull, or pure Led Zeppelin worship. But many have a certain quality that seem like they're hinting at what would later become metal.

My 10 cents:

Jacula - In Cauda Semper Stat Venenum (1969) - very dark prog rock with one doom metal song which is way ahead of it's time, other 5 songs are more of 60's dark ambient
Jacula - Tardo Pede In Magiam Versus (1972) - less heavy and less dark, but still good listening
Icecross - s/t (1973) - heavy and doomy bluesy hard rock
Iron Maiden - Maiden Voyage (1969) - mix of blues, prog, psych and hard rock, with some occult themes and a bit of folk influences in one song
Epitaph - s/t (1971) - prog/hard rock, similar to Uriah Heep and Led Zeppelin
Jeronimo - Time Ride (1972) - also prog/hard rock album, the title track is fantastic
Compilation Downer Rock Genocide is also great, features 60's/70' hard rock/proto metal bands
Drugi Način - s/t (1975) - exellent hard rock with 60's influences.
