Basically im looking for some dark, ethereal, atmospheric electronic music with faire use of orchestral elements or at least a string quartet. Drone-y passages are welcome too.

Well, there are some martial industrial acts that you might enjoy that fall well along those lines, even if they don't fit perfectly.

Legionarii - The Giant is Awake https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9Bi3i6AtjI

Not really string heavy, but the drones seem to be derived from strings: Triarii - Legio VI Ferrata https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omc0qxlTl6Q

Arditi - False Mask of Freedom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFGMgJkpwwc

If you can tolerate a bit of guitars and drums as well, I highly reccommend Neurotech's "Symphonies" album. It has basically all that you seem to ask for.

If not that, you should check out the soundtracks for the Mirror's Edge games, by Solar Fields. Not exclusively ambient -- it is a video game OST after all -- but a fair share of it.

Popol Vuh are far from dark, quite warm and bright actually, but otherwise their discography is chocked full of things that could please you, if you haven't heard them

I cannot fucking believe I forgot to mention this, but the soundtrack to the last two Deus Ex games, by Michael McCann will probably right up your alley.
