To any fans of Emperor who also like progressive metal, I implore you to buy angL by Ihsahn. There isn't very much in the way of symphonic black metal here but this man is damned talented with prog here. Mikael Akerfeldt appears on Unhealer which is a song that sounds more Opeth than anything else but still a great tune. This is why I recommend this album on this thread than the black one.

I couldn't find a symphonic/Orchestral help thread, so this one will suffice.

I am looking for Orchestral metal composed in a similar way to Rhapsody, although preferably not power metal. Hollenthon and Therion are very close to what I am looking for.

Thanks.

Ashes to Ashes, while not as symphonic as those two, still has some orchestration. Very good prog as well. Angizia, Dunwich and The Eternal Blade should also be along the lines of what you are looking for. Also, check Kraken's (Col) album with a filarmonic orchestra. Believe me, it gives Metallica's a run for its money.

OMG ! That album from The eternal blade is so fuckin great !!!
More tips like this one!

This thread is just amazing, I'm discovering lots of new bands. I recommend Empyrean Sky to everyone, excellent progressive death metal with some nice mellow parts.

ok, I am looking for progressive metal bands with female singer. it can be prog. metal with jazz elements (like first album of Aghora, second one actually I dont like, it is much worse, they turned to be more metal but it lost its uniqueness) or it can be something like Akphaezya which I totally love!
Also Atrox in the Orgasm era came to my mind.
I would be pleased also with something similar to Pin-ip went down, and some avant-garde metal which is my favourite genre.

I already know and like: 3rd and the mortal, Fleurety, The Soundbyte, Portal (Us), Star of Ash, Tactille gemma, Madder mortem.

If you want amazing female-fronted progressive metal, look no further than To-Mera. Both of their albums are fantastic and worth checking out.

I already know them. I like their first album. The second one was not so good as far as I remember, but I have listened it only once. I'll give it another try.
I heard a lot about their gig at one big open-air fest in my country, playing live they absolutely failed.

I checked it out and I enjoy it very much. It makes it in my top 10 of 2008.

I'd like to know your opinion about band Dol ammad.
It is definitely not for all, this band combines metal with electronica and they have 11-member classical choir.

To me, first album "Star tales" is undoubtly masterpiece, it is monumental...

I have never heard something like that...

For everybody looking for some progress in metal I have some recommendations:

Sirrah - Did tomorrow come, perfect polish doom-death, little bit proggy.
Madder mortem - Deadlands, probably well-known but good prog. doom
Farmakon - Robin, softer prog. death, definitely worth checking out
Garden wall - Forget the colours, very little known italian band playing truly progressive metal/rock, it is very underrated. There are really superb moments on this album.

I was really pleased by The Eternal blade, Empyrean sky and Ashes to Ashes, simply amazing recommendations...
I am always looking for more stuff like that...

What makes Pyramaze suck so much in your world?

They're a boring band with no redeeming features, hooks, power or anything and I don't understand how people derive enjoyment from them. But it seems many do anyway.

Try norwegian Lunaris, it is good progressive melodic black metal with both shrieks and clean vocals.
Or Renaissamce - The death of art is very weird album that fits your criteria: http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=43063

Hey,
I'm looking for some Technical/Avant-Garde Black Metal in the vain of Deathspell Omega, Ved Buens Ende, and Arcturus. I'd prefer harsher vocals and heavier but still, variation is key. All of the bands mentioned have parts that are quite heavy and softer interludes/songs. Good production would be nice as well.
Thanks,
Jake

You mentioned really great bands. Finnish Apocryphal voice are very similar to Ved buens ende, check them out.

Vulture industries became quite famous for being similar to Arcturus (mainly vocalwork). I've seen them live but I cant say I like them a lot, maybe you will...

The Firstborn are also very good, however I am disappointed about their new album, the first one "From the Past Yet to Come" is very good, it is not so avant-garde when compared with other mentioned bands but still it is quite original and varied black metal.

Another tip - Drottnar, on the archives they are labelled as "technical black metal" and they are definitely worth checking out.

I can recommend also: Sigh, Korova, Peccatum, The Wicked, Potentiam etc.

I love Star Tales. It's really upbeat, catchy, and tripped out. Sometimes when they play the keys really fast it feels like you're on drugs.

Free? I didn't think it was free. Nevertheless, its still a great demo. Debut album this year I hope!

Does anyone else have extremely high hopes about the new Dream Theater album due to be released this year after this?;

I've listened to Becoming The Archetype's 3 albums just yesterday, i felt that they are a band to watch out for despite their lyrical theme based on Christianity.
Any opinions on this band if you've heard of them?

They're pretty good, but I've only heard Terminate Damnation so far. I'll have to check out their latest, Dichtonomy, as I've heard they completely lost the metalcore influence, also because of Devin Townsend being the producer and even playing in one of their songs.

Also, if anybody is looking for something similar to Arcturus, definitely check out Damned Spirits' Dance.

Try Polish Sirrah, album Did tomorrow come, it is quite original sounding doom/death metal with powerful atmosphere.

both albums are total masterpieces. Why it so unknown...

Who else likes To Mera? Recommendations for similar bands would be great. Also how does Delusions chalk up to Transcendental? I have heard the first, and am interested in Transcendental. But one of the reviews here referred to them as "Lacuna Coil want their album back", that's put me on second thoughts because Delusions did not sound like that at all. Would like to know if the reviewer was wrong and just bashing the genre or something.

I like them. Especially the first album. Some similar bands have been already mentioned, mainly Akphaezya, Atrox (early) and Aghora are absolutely worth checking out.

Or possibly Moonlight - Integrated in the System of Guilt, on the archives it is classified as gothic/progressive metal and on the last album there is also trip hop. It is sung in Polish language and contains both male and female vocalists. It harvested very good reviews here.

Recently I discovered also russian band Spinefish, it is not on archives. Album Fool's paradise revisited is nice music with good female vocalist, hard to tag, influences are gothic metal, trip hop, ambient..

You must try out Counter World Experience. Also give Wayd a try but it's more experimental in nature and has death metal growls.

@ Topic

Seiges Even
Alchemy X

These bands are original and are GREAT. In a genre where copying Dream Theater reign supreme these bands create their very own brand of progressive metal.

If you liked the debut there is no reason you won't like this album, though I must add that the debut is better!

For similar sounding bands try out Aghora, Stream Of Passion, Beyond Twilight and Circus Maximus.
