I'm looking for albums/songs from any band that resembles that cheery folk metal sound. One that you can get drunk with friends and sing-along, or yell-along to upon listen. Some songs for example, to clear things up, are Ensiferum's Guardians of Fate, and Goblin's Dance. Those group yells are just way too fun. Something along those lines. Thanks in advance.

Trollfest from Norway
Adolf Castle from Russia
Alestorm from teh UK

Hey guys, can you suggest me some melodic death metal-ish folk metal? Catchy, memorable melodies, epic, monumental choruses, not so black metal-ish, more melodic death metal-ish, and still not gothenburg-ish at all. Oh, and I know about Wintersun, or Amon Amarth. I don't care if the band uses actual folk instruments, folk-ish melodies alone would fit the bill. Viking-themed lyrics, or lyrics about nature are necessary, though. You get the idea. Any help?

Wanna rec me some stuff like early Falkenbach? Really good moody keys that carry the music and craft a melancholic but also somewhat prideful atmosphere but aren't too overblown is sort of the key (lol) element I'd like to be emulated. A good combination of clean and harsh vocals would be appreicated as well.

I’m looking for acoustic folk albums. I got the new Elvenking one and I’ve heard the new Eluveitie one, I’m looking for something more in the lines of “Urminnes Hävd - The Forest Sessions” by Månegarm. Any suggestions?

The new Eluveitie is called “Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion” came out this year. And as of folk/power that’s not Elvenking, try Ensiferum, also try Falconer, Falconer isn’t as folk oriented as other folk/power bands, they focus more on the vocals, but they’re still worth checking out.

Falconer are also amazing. Chapters of a Vale Forlorn is absolutely seminal, one of the best modern PM albums.

Not a request, I just wanted to say I've finally found a folk band that can really draw out the intense beauty of folk music ... Norway's Vàli. 'Forlatt' is such a great demo and I'm glad to hear there is an album in the pipeline. Underrated folk music. :)

Not sure if you consider this happy but.. Nogroth - Kulmbacher Bier is an AMAZING song. On their demo, Troll Berserker. It has amazing quality, it isn't really rough demo. It's a great song. And a great demo.

Rivendell - A Drinking Song

It's different then my previous 2 songs I told you about

I've probably said this before, but anyone looking for some downtempo, black metal based stuff might enjoy Häive, from Finland.

Also Ealdulf http://www.myspace.com/ealdulfband who are well worth checking out if you like folk/ambient BM. Plus their songs have titles in Old English which is fucking brilliant. Folk elements not so apparent, but check them out anyway.

I find black metal based folk metal to be far more satisfying. Contrary to what one might expect, I've generally heard more infusions of folk melodies and more genuine appreciation for folk music in black metal circles than I have in terms of the happy humppa stuff.

Looking for an epic Viking metal band in the vein of Falkenbach.

Love: big choir chants, snarling BM vocals, catchy riffs, subtle keyboards

Dislike: metalcore vocals, ambient music, dull stuff

Much love!

Some obvious choices (possibly too obvious) would be Moonsorrow, Finsterforst (particularly the second album), or Menhir.

Less obvious choices would be Askival or Forefather, though Forefather is Anglo-Saxon themed rather than Viking, and Askival is sort of a mix of Celtic and Germanic/Norse themes.

Or check out Morrigan (Germany) for Celtic-themed metal with a sound like Falkenbach or "Blood Fire Death"-era Bathory.

What do you regard as 'ambient'?

Askival and Forefather are definite good choices. Askival have a second album coming out shortly, I believe.

Hello fellow metalheads!

I was inquiring on such a genre Viking metal, I have only begun my journey into this already wonderful genre, and I was wondering if you could suggest some bands for me!

I have already discovered Amon Amarth and Bathory, and I love 'em.

Anymore essential beginner bands?

Equilibrium.
I not sure if people consider Falkenbach Viking metal but they are good.

That's asll I can really classify as more vikingish, as I do not consider Moonsorrow to be viking. If they are they are good too.

oh, and Heathen Foray (Aut) is more melodic death metallish. Remind me of Amon Amarth

Sorgsvart sounds like it might be for you. Very catchy, melodic black/Viking metal with clean and rasping bm vocals. Get their first album, Fortapt Fra Verden I Vakkert Selvmord first.

Well, I would recommend Crimfall. Here's an example of their music that you might like:

Crimfall-Wildfire Season
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3uEqnrsDJs

Has: Female and BM vocals, choral accompaniments, strong folk influence, piano and other various instrumentation, epic feel

Doesn't have: metalcore vocals, ambient, or (imo) dull stuff

Long have I searched for such a band. The only recommendation which comes close imo is Windir. Check out their Arntor album:

Imo this song perfectly captures that powerful melancholic feel

I'm of the opinion that Thyrfing's "Vansinnesvisor" is the best folk/viking album out there.

Am I wrong? Rec me something better?

Is there any folk/viking stuff that as deep chants like those on Enslaved's 'Havenless'?

Preferably ones that run through the entire song, with no harsh vocals?

You are indeed, considering I don't even think it's their best album (then again I'm not all that big on Thyrfing anyway, so don't mind me). But some things you may like more:

Falkenbach - Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri or En Their Medh Riki Fara

Helheim - Av Norrøn Ætt or Jormungand

Borknagar's S/T

Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi

Windir - Sóknardalr

Myrkgrav - Trollskau, Skrømt Og Kølabrenning: Very folk-influenced black metal with clean and bm singing. One of the more brilliant releases from the genre.

Sorgsvart - Fortapt Fra Verden I Vakkert Selvmord: Been recommending this band for ages now and I'm still going. This really is a great black/Viking metal album with terrific riffs, vocals and well, everything.

Moonsorrow - Verisäkeet: Clearly their best album. Anyone who disagrees is a strange, strange lad. :p

Basically any Månegarm album because they're all extremely solid while not being completely spectacular. Very good though.

Storm - Nordavind: Black/folk metal output from Satyr and Fenriz. Traditional Norwegian folk songs recorded with a bit of a Norse black metal touch. Oh, you may also want to check out Isengard too, which is another of Fenriz's projects. Get either Høstmørke or Vinterskugge. Both absolutely rule.

Temnozor - Folkstorm of the Azure Nights

Wyrd - Huldrafolk or Heathen

Druzhina - Echoes of Distant Battlefields

Geasa - Angel's Cry

All of these may not be exactly what you're looking for but they all have some kind of folk/viking element in there. I don't know how well you know the genre so I put some more obvious ones in there too. I strongly suggest checking out Myrkgrav, Sorgsvart and Helheim out of those though.

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but try checking out Wardruna. Their debut Runaljod - Gap Var Ginnunga is more of a Dark Ambient/folk type thing, but if you're into that at all it's full of fantastic traditional chanting style singing. It's also completely fucking brilliant so you should check it out anyway.

I know most of those, but there's a few I've not heard, thanks. Falkenbach, Windir, Helheim, early Enslaved and early Borknagar, hard to go wrong there.

I'd say the followup "Farsotstider" outdoes it just a touch. Not as easily accessible as Vansinnesvisor, but with a more consistent use of keyboards and a rather sinister vibe that runs throughout (check out my review.)

But both are really great. Kind of a shame that what I've heard of "Hels Vite" sounds so dull.

This is just a general recommendation because I remember some people asking a while back for acoustic folk bands and I have another that's worthy of a mention. Nhor from England. One man acoustic folk band (that's now branching out into black metal I believe) that writes very minimalistic, sombre pieces mostly composed of guitars and piano. He has no actual releases yet, although I believe he's recording at the moment, but you can listen to a number of his tracks on his myspace. Interesting band if you're into that type of thing.
