I'm looking for folk metal that draws influence from death metal rather than black metal.

Eluveite, a celtic death metal influenced folk metal band.

Shangren, an oriental death metal influenced folk metal band.

Also, maybe Orphaned Land? A middle-eastern death metal influenced band.

I remember finding a band a while back but for the life of me I can't remember their name. They were a folk/viking metal group who were christian. There was a little black metal in their music but it was mainly folk metal. They were either from Scandinavia or somewhere in eastern Europe (perhaps Russia?), and they had an album available on itunes. If anyone could help me out with this I would appreciate it.

I don't think so. The band I'm thinking of had an album on itunes and I remember that the artwork didn't match Arvinger's.

Hmm...that's the only viking band with Christian(?) lyrics I could find on the archives. Good luck on your quest.

Could someone recommend me some 'festive' folk metal? Along the lines of Kalevala or Korpiklaani.

Tuatha de Danaan might hit the spot, The Delerium Has Just Begun is awesome.

Also a great band that falls into the folky death metal genre is Allvater. They are more guitar-oriented folk metal but they are very melodic.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could recomend some blasting, heavy, but epic and melocic folk metal, but also with a dark sound. Example: Kroda, Nachtfalke, Windir, Absurd.

Doomsword. Haven't heard this band much, but they most certainly do fit into the "blasting, heavy, but epic" category. Their music isn't folky, but their lyrics are; vikings, irish myth, fantasy.

Sorgsvart should suit you. Both albums are great, but I prefer the debut 'Fortapt Fra Verden I Vakkert Selvmord'. Great black/folk metal with lots of heavy, palm-muted type riffs but also with an immense folk influence and sensibility. Brilliant band.

You should try out Destroy Destroy Destroy.
Not very dark, but still awesome.

wasnt sure if this should go in the black metal or folk metal section but Im looking for Black Metal Bands with strong folk influences. Bands like Moonsorrow's earlier works. (Kivenkantaja to be more precise)

I decided to put it in the Folk section because i'd like a more dominant Folk sound but still have the darkness of Black Metal.

You should really check out Windir. An absolutely fantastic band!

Thanks but I probably should have been more specific. I've got most of the obvious ones including Agalloch, Windir, Wyrd, Enslaved, Primordial, Temnozor, Thyrfing, Tyr.

Sorry about that.

Any other suggestions? Im still more focused on bands similar to Moonsorrow.

Finsterforst reminds me a lot of older Moonsorrow.

A friend of mine is barely into metal but he is a big fan of Heidevolk. He's very interested in germanic/nordic culture but especially the mythology. Lyrics are quite important to him. So preferably that pagan them. He doesn't really mind a scream once in a while, but I don't think he likes unlistenably harsh vocals all through the song. Also, he likes his classic rock.

So I'm looking for some more folkmetalbands in the vein of Heidevolk for him to have a look at. He liked Bathory - Mother Earth Father Thunder. Can Anyone provide a list of songs/albums/bands for me to recommend to him?

What language do they have to be in if lyrics are important?

Here are a couple suggestions I guess:

Metsatöll
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbg9iDpQp00

Ereb Altor (more Bathory influenced)

I'm looking for some viking metal that uses the multi-vocal choir clean vocals that bathory and later moonsorrow uses with a how do i say this, 'immense' atmosphere and feel, the kind of stuff that just surrounds you in atmosphere when you listen to it. There has to be decent guitar riffs as well, thats the problem i have with falkenbach, it gets really close but the keyboards trample over the guitars and the entire sound seems kind of light and thin. Production is not an issue it can be as raw as it gets and neither is harsh vocals. Bonus if it features a variety of tempos from doom to faster paced stuff be it thrash metal like bathory or black metal like moonsorrow.

Don't rec, crom, ereb altor, draugnim, hiedevolk, or scald i've checked them out already.

Also, i'd like to see some power metal that uses those vocals, as most power metal bands just have backing vocals that are slightly less falsetto than the lead.

@Evangelion2014: Ensiferum perhaps? More power/melodeath based than most "Viking" metal but their latest labums uses prominent choirs a lot.
MA Page: http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=332
Sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALrjjJdmxgA

Arkona's newer material maybe? Their latest in particular could be what you're after.

Try Crom for a Bathory meets Power Metal "experience" ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vmiYXiSfM8

and Morrigan's album "Headcult" (no power metal here ;) ) :

Hm, I stated in my post that I already knew of crom, but thanks for rec'ing morrigan, the mixture of raw black metal combined with viking metal is really great, has the 'immense' atmosphere I was talking about.

Ok, let me refine my question again, i'm looking for viking metal with great clean vocals and an immense atmosphere especially if it combines elements from black, thrash or death metal. Again, i'm looking for viking metal not folk metal, so I'm not looking for something like eluvetie or finntroll.

With clean vocals? Do you already know the big black/viking metal bands?
Try Crimfall. Very alike to Turisas

I've actually listened to quite a bit of folk/viking metal, but I haven't found much in the similar vein as moonsorrow or bathory i.e., immense and epic atmosphere, a mix of doom-ish stuff and faster black/folk/thrash passages that lends it self to 8min+ epics. I'm looking for stuff that uses either the choir vocals of bathory and moonsorrow, the excellent clean vocals of heidevolk or the singular 'nordic' chants of isengard or storm. Prominent guitar is also good, i really dont care for the stuff that claims to be viking metal but really is just single strumming or power chords over power metal synths. If they mix harsh and clean vocals all the better. I also don't want the overly happy(triumphant stuff is ok, just not stuff like say alestorm) beer swilling kind of stuff like korplikanni or finntroll[dont rec these :P]. It doesn't HAVE to be viking metal, epic black or folk metal can work if they pull of the atmosphere and vocals enough. Use whats in this paragraphs for recs, heres what i already heard and know of so you don't rec something i already am aware of:

Einherjer, bathory, moonsorrow, svartsot, arvinger, asmegin, helheim, enslaved, sorgsvart, isengard, storm, graveland, eluvetite, morrigan, forefather, kampfar, rivendell, thyrfing, enslaved, crom, ereb altor, scald (rus), draughim, helheim, black lotus, windir, bloodaxe, dark forest, dark messiah, equlibrium, myrkgrav, hiedevolk, manegarm, vintersorg, borknagar, ensiferum, falkenbach, thronar, stormheit, crimfall.
