I recently took up creating Chiptune music (nothing presentable so far, I'll get there eventually), and yesterday I read through this old topic on Dungeon Synth and browsed through the Dungeon Synth blog again after years, and listened to some stuff on Youtube and Bandcamp. Quite naturally, the idea of creating similar stuff by means of 8-bit soundchips crossed my mind. While that would probably be the epitome of nerdiness, the idea doesn't seem very far fetched to me as Dungeon Synth is very close in style to some video game music anyway, and some of the stuff I heard reminded me strongly of 16-bit game music (think Amiga).

So I did some googling, and found that Erang has done alternative 8-Bit versions of some of his tracks:

Youtube: show

Youtube: show

That's all I could find though, and while they're nice enough, I don't feel they exploit the full potential of the combination, as they sound rather static to me, while Chiptune can actually sound quite dynamic and lively in the right hands.

Does anyone know of anything else? As for creating it myself, while the idea of having a go at it is appealing, knowing myself and my eclectic tastes, I could never stick to such a limited style for long enough to create more than maybe one or two tracks; but if anyone else has created anything in this vein, I'd love to hear it.

Not sure if relevant or not, still give it a shot.

Yeah, not exactly what I was looking for, but I like it! Good Chiptune is cool in any flavour, and this is certainly very nicely done.

The search for more Chiptune Dungeon Synth will probably remain fruitless anyway, seeing as how even the genre proper is relatively small and obscure...

Erang is great. Definitely enjoyed some of his stuff, and I'm not even that familiar with the style.

I agree, that was one of the highlights of my recent exploration. Quite an original voice, as far as the genre goes.

I made this a few years ago as a commission for some person's game project that they never finished, always wanted to do more retro-sampled fantasy music but never got around to it. It's a small loop, but you get the idea:

VileRancour aka the guy who created the Metal Archives logo once covered Burzum's "Black Spell of Destruction" on an old SID (C64 sound chip) simulator called GoatTracker and it sounded amazing. I think I have it on some cd-r somewhere...
