For the "South Of Heaven" part I would recommend "Greed, Tyranny & Sodomy" by dutch Crustacean.

I've been out of the loop for a few months (tech death binge). Any recent thrash releases worth a shot?

I'm familiar with the new Power Trip, Havok, Harlott, Kreator, Sepultura, Droid, Vampire, Condor & Warbringer.

You probably forgot Antichrist but in case you didn't... most definitely check them out.

I've been spinning Madrost these days, tech-thrash and I'm liking it a lot, might make my top list this year. I wish for vocals with more character but I wish that for almost every release...

Speaking of tech-thrash, new Toxik EP is well worth your time as well.

Any recommendations for bands that put a large emphasis on atmosphere, but are still heavily built on thrash riffs?

I'm thinking something akin to Voivod, late Coroner, Anacrusis or 90s Kreator (especially in the vein of Renewal and/or Outcast).

Just throwing it out there:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLhf0T ... -vjkUGw-nI
Circles Over Sidelights: Thrashy 90s metalcore with weird atmospheric bits & then some, kinda' messy but it's worth a shot.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xC_mFaUvOu0
Dream Death: Celtic Frost-esque death doom with thrash

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VGJhqQcG_n8
Dreadwing: Somebody mentioned they sound like St. Vitus & Testament in the comments, I can see it.

I'm sure this has been asked in this thread previously, but 125 pages is a lot to go through.

I heard "Nightmare Logic" by Power Trip and thought it was pretty damn good. I've come across countless thrash revival bands recommended on Youtube, but there are soooo many. I want to get into some of these thrash revival bands, but there's SO many that I don't know what is worth my time and what is just generic. It's easy to sound generic when emulating a genre that already has a lot of bands within it, and that already had a lot of generic bands.

So, who's worth listening to in this thrash revival movement? Toxic Holocaust is pretty good. Like I said, I was liking Power Trip, from what I've heard. Vektor isn't band, a little "too much" going on. I don't really know who to bother with or who to avoid.

ALSO, I'm looking for GOOD black/thrash. I really, really like Aura Noir's "Black Thrash Attack" and I always have liked Sauron's "Thrash Assault". The Aura Noir album is really what I'm looking for. It has SO much energy, the riffs are really great and thrash-y with the blackened tinge to them which makes them super badass. Plenty of cool ass riffs on that album, and most importantly, its catchy. I want something that is catchy while still maintaining the blackened vibe. The riffs in this kinda stuff, to me, gotta be catchy in order to be worth something. Also worthy of mention is how much I LOVE the drum sound on "Black Thrash Attack". The drums are super punchy and upfront. They're out of control, energetic, and totally insane. The drumming is a total asset to that album. I love it because there are plenty of fills and switches, it's not just a straight D-beat. And the drums are fast as fuck, so intense. So anything similar to that would be great.

TL;DR: Good thrash revival stuff, and good black/thrash similar to Aura Noir.

On the retro thrash request, you should try Birth A.D.'s I Blame You. It's a little on the crossover-side (I assume that's not an issue for you), and it's a great album. Birth A.D. are also from the same scene as Power Trip, so they should go down well for you.

Thanks, StainedClass.

I also have another thing to add to my post. Is the band Desaster worth checking out? I have seen their name around a bit while searching for bands to listen to, and they have a lot of albums. Which ones should I check out? Can anyone recommend one for me to start out with, to see if I like them?

You're welcome.

Desaster are a highly regarded band in black/thrash, so they should be one that you listen to. As for as albums go, the first couple are the ones I hear touted most regularly, so those are the ones to begin with. The newer ones garner positive reviews as well, but I don't see them regarded in the same way. I'm not sure why, but it seems like they are not considered as highly even if they're somewhat popular. I'd say you should listen to the debut and if you enjoy it then keep listening to them in roughly chronological order.

Maybe try the latest album by Bloodlust from Australia, if you can live with a bit of melody and polish. The riffs are there, though.

I also found it on youtube, but the quality is a bit crappy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NroXdOYGerc

Some quotes from old discussions here, on the subject of good new thrash albums.

Dungeon_Vic wrote:
Trallery is a band that came to my mind. I think they are great, their debut is my favorite Spanish metal release (2013). They play thrash but their songwriting covers a lot of ground, from speed/power to deathrash to tech-thrash, they even have a (fine) hard n' heavy song. All this revolves a Metallica gravity center, which you can hear very clearly in a couple of songs, notably the opener. Vocals might be an acquired taste, I love them, very passionate and the dude totally goes for it with many styles- but a bit clumsy at times. They didn't impress me much at first listen but they had some awesome passages that brought me back and soon I was addicted. Oh, and great solos throughout.
I'd suggest digging in the whole album (no fillers) but to get an idea:
Trallery - Disease
Trallery - Path of Life (fave song, a total metal anthem, epic album closer)

Best blackened thrash imo out there:
Quote:
For Slayer, Nekromantheon is the most excited I got with a recent dark thrash album (Rise, Vulcan Spectre - 2012) that would truly make old Slayer proud. Strictly 83-86 Slayer (84-86 to be more precise):
Nekromantheon - Blood Wisdom
Nekromantheon - Rise, Vulcan Spectre (shows their black roots too)
Nekromantheon - Cast Down to the Void

For something more melodic, I really liked Forte's 2012 Unholy War (that song Dead to Me, reminds me of Megadeth too, LOVE IT)

And although it's not really Metallica or Slayer or MF, Rigor Mortis' final album is fucking excellent thrash.

Norway's on a roll in the old school filthy, blackened thrash at the moment:
Nahsil wrote:
on the note of Condor and that whole awesome Norwegian scene, new Antichrist (SWE) album is sounding awesome as hell. I made a thread about it:

https://www.metal-archives.com/board/vi ... 1&t=118458

here's the tracks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt9wWs3Pzdw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJj9he1sntY

You can tell I REALLY liked Antichrist:
Quote:
Holy shit guys, the new Antichrist is really, really, really awesome. It's everything I like about good old (european) thrash metal, with the organic production and everything but the songwriting is WAY more than just old school thrash worship. There's tons of melodic heavy metal to be found among the filthy, evil thrash and it's a marvel to hear them mix celtic frost and epic heavy metal in the same song. I mean they had this element of heavy/thrash on Forbidden World too but this time around they stepped up their game. The s/t track, The Black Pharaoh, they all have this element in spades, the latter for example in the middle and the solo section REALLY takes off. I would say it shares this epic old school feel and thrash in a similar manner with Destroyer 666 - Wildfire, so if you liked that one, definitely check Antichrist too.

Top 5 album for the year I think...

Sargent Salsten is one of my favorite extreme vocalists of all time. Full Moon Sorcery has earned a place in the pantheon of insane performances.

------

Nylithia- Hyperthrash, good new thrash with some tech overtones.

Aggression- Spanish tech thrash, not extreme tech but very good. Vocals are subpar though as well.

Ripper from Chile, a lot of us agreed that they fucking rule. Rabid thrash.
Experiment of Existence

Kreator/Sepultura worship but with fucking attitude and inspiration, well worth the listens:
Deathraiser from Brazil
Hypnosia from Sweden (one of the first, before the actual revival, they missed the hype by being too early. Drummer died and so did the band)

Best place in the world for smashing black-thrash is clearly Australia imho. Besides Bloodlust and Shackles there has to be mentioned...

... Sithlord - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWv2WauHZkA

... and the best band ever in that sub-sub-genre - Shrapnel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-Al1VgotJI

Too sad they only managed to put out that one album ("Hellbound") but that one destroyes all!

This was very fun and I looked into the album, which was very, very enjoyable and way more interesting and unique than what the video let on and I am very glad to have found it. Thanks a lot for this.

You're welcome. If you liked that Children stuff, maybe S.T.R.E.E.T.S. could be something for you, too. It was the singer/guitarist's band before Children.

Yeah, that was very nice too, interesting mix and sound. I'll be spending some time with those two albums. Cheers!

What's that thrash band with the pinkish 80's styled album art that kinda sounds like Vektor? I'm pretty sure they had a 2016 or 2017 release, and the album art was pretty bitchin', but I can't remember if they were any good or not.

YES! It was Droid thanks a ton dude! I can't believe I got an answer so fast with such an awful description, I love it. Of course now I have to check out Euphoria as well.

Seconded. There was a lot of killer thrash last year but that album blew my mind.

Has anyone besides me noticed how much Dark Angel borrowed from Cyclone Temple on "Time Does Not Heal"? Vocals are very similar in parts, as is some of the riffing and drumming. The last half of "Words and just Words" could've been on TDNH.

I'm looking for thrash metal which is inspired by Num Skull's Ritually Abused and/or Morbid Saint's Spectrum of Death, preferably new bands (formed in this decade). If it came out in the 1980s or 1990s, I'm probably already aware of it, but with newer bands, I've been mostly checking out newer death metal lately as opposed to thrash, so help out in the extreme thrash department if possible.

Plus, since I am considering starting a "stop at nothing" campaign to bring an extreme metal show to within my region, if they're new and active, they're more likely to come here, since most bands from the 1980s and 1990s in that style are no longer active, so I can submit their names as suggestions to the venue owners for extreme metal bands for possible opening acts.
