Kind of a specific request, but here goes:

I'm looking for something that sounds like Depressive Age and/or late-era Anacrusis (already heard Masquerader).

Well, scrolling through my reviews here: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/GeneralZ ... rm-of-art/

I see ...

Depressive Age:
Acrimony - In Unknown Direction (1992)
Secrecy - Art in Motion (1990)
Sore Plexus - Haptephobic (1999)

Anacrusis:
Aftermath -Eyes of Tomorrow (2015)
(early Anacrusis) Disciples of Power - Powertrap (1989)

(both Depressive Age and Anacrusis/Kenn Nardi solo)
Lost Century - Complex Microcosm - Movement in Nine Rituals (1994)
Sacrosanct -Tragic Intense (1993)
Secrecy - Raging Romance (1991)

Hope this helps! The reviews link above will provide additional info about quality, etc.

Great. I found some good bands. No, I am not familiar with those bands so if you can make the obvious recommendations too then that would be awesome.

SADUS - Swallowed in Black
DARK ANGEL - Darkness Descends, Time Does Not Heal

Happy listening!

I've been browsing around the youtube channel New Wave of Old School Thrash Metal and found tons of stuff I like.

So I'm sure that I want to explore thrash metal in greater depth. Can someone recommend some bands for a level 2 listener. Level 1 of course being someone who has heard Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth etc.

Thanks in advance.

Few favorites: Coroner's first four are beyond mandatory, and i consider Artillery's By Inheritance and Toxik's Think This to be tier one classics

Morbid Saint's Spectrum of Death and Holy Moses's Finished with the Dogs are both a pure rush of adrenaline, Deathrow's Deception Ignored is mind numbingly complex and Sacrifice's Soldiers of Misfortune features some inspiring guitar work

For more light-hearted thrash i'll suggest Stone's No Anesthesia and the way too underrated The Morning After by Tankard

Those can be a start, i'm sure that the thrashers on the board can be more helpful :)

Coroner, no more color
Annihilator, never never land
Testament, the legacy
Overkill, taking over
Overkill, horrors cope
Artillery, by inheritance
Kreator, extreme aggression
Exodus, fabulous disaster
Sepultura, beneath the remains

So I assume you are used to Anthrax, Exodus, Testament, Kreator, Overkill, Destruction and Sepultura. Or would they already be level two in your book?

@infrablack, I should have mentioned Exodus,Testament,Kreator,Sepultura since I'm already familiar with them. Sepultura and Kreator are some of my all time favorite bands in the entire metal genre not just thrash metal.

I see. And you are looking for recommendations out of the "new wave" of old-school Thrash and not out of the second row of the original wave from the second half of the eighties till let's say 1992. Am I right?

Well, yes, that would be great. The new school has a good sound. But if you could drop some names from an 'essential listening for a metalhead' list then that would be really great too. I look forward to a time when I might be able to assist others too and having a good base would certainly help with that.

No problem man. My tastes tend to gravitate toward melodic singers and technical thrash but I think you'll find some other really good stuff in there too.

OK, I've already thrown so much bands from the "new wave" into this thread and I want to avoid to bore people by repeating them over and over, so I will try to fix something like an "essential list" for the new wave and the classics. Maybe tomorrow... ;-)

I'm looking for something similar to Sepultura's Morbid Visions / Bestial Devastation. Possibly an album that has a slightly raw blackened thrash or death/thrash sound. I know that the Cogumelo Record label is not well known but their quality of music is what I'm searching for. Not on all albums of course.

I just stumbled upon this Brazilian thrash metal band called Necromancer and been checking their 1996 demo out. It fucking rips. Behold!

Not exactly what you are looking for in terms of sonic quality/raw approach but try Apostasy's "Sunset of the End" - it has that specific vibe that you might really like.

For amusement purposes, I'm looking for the most generic post-1988, somewhat Metallica inspired thrash. It should meet the following criteria:

- lyrical themes like the environment, o-zone layer, vague politics (ala And Justice for All).
- Nothing too aggressive
- Something American or potentially English
- Some level of technical playing

I got one for you Acrobat. It may not tick all of those boxes but I think it fits pretty well:

I'm having difficulty remembering the name of a band. I found them on the New Wave of Old School Thrash Metal channel on youtube.

They did an amazing cover of Crystal Mountain by Death.

Does anyone recognize the name of this band?

TIA.

I never considered later Intruder to be Metallica-inspired but apart from that it ticks all of the boxes.

Fair point. Admittedly, it is stretching the "somewhat" in "somewhat Metallica inspired" quite a bit.

Last night I saw Toxik with Mike Sanders do World Circus in its entirety and it ruled. I've always enjoyed that album, but I have a feeling I'll be spinning it constantly now. I'm going to need to revisit Think This because I never got into that one as much, but perhaps it will grow on me now that I've heard a few songs from it live.

I didn't realize before this show that Sanders isn't actually their singer anymore. He agreed to do these 3 Canadian dates only. They also didn't announce before the tour that they were doing all of World Circus. And supposedly they never rehearsed because they brought some guy from Canada's west coast out to play bass, so he couldn't rehearse with them. But even Sanders said he didn't really get to rehearse either. Somehow it was flawless. Josh Christian is easily one of the best guitarists I've ever seen live, and Sanders sounds every bit as good as he did on the album.

I never considered later Intruder to be Metallica-inspired but apart from that it ticks all of the boxes.

I really think Intruder is much closer in sound and approach to Anthrax.

High melodic lead vocals
tongue-in-cheek songs, including cover song selection
gang vocals
substitute Stephen King lyrics for Twilight Zone ones

I think they check all the boxes.

I agree with the original suggestion of Xentrix as poor man's Metallica.
