I don't know if I'm explaining myself well at all like the description says I'm looking for bands that have a real NWOBHM or classic metal feel but have maybe a slight passing familiarity with gothic or post-punk elements.

Some of my favorite heavy metal bands are groups like Iron Maiden, Angel Witch, Mercyful Fate(and King Diamond in general), and Manilla Road. Revved up rock with a lot of good licks and guitar solos, frequent dabbings of progressive rock, and a love for spookiness or dark fantasy in their lyrics.

I also just love groups like Siouxsie and the Banshees with Juju in particular standing as one of my favorite albums of all time. The shimmering guitar work from John McGeoch always gets me.

So I suppose I'm asking for a band that's got some of the revved up energy, cool guitar solos, energy and attitude of these bands, but has just that tinge of the shimmering guitars and general "goth" ambiance of the post-punk bands.

Bonus points if they write a cool song about ghosts.

This is probably not quite what you're looking for, but it's worth a try:

Unto Others (previously known as Idle Hands)
Dark heavy metal meets goth rock and post-punk. Nice and catchy, and overall just fantastic.

Sonja
Got a lot in common with Unto Others, but is not as post-punky and sounds more traditional metal I guess. Still quite unique and just exceptionally good. Fantastic debut album!

In Solitude - Sister
Mercyful Fate and King Diamond meets Samhain and that type of deathrock. Superb album!

Oh these are all EXACTLY up my alley actually!

The opening to Pallid Hands by In Solitude is practically my ideal sound here!

Jesus Fix may be close to what you're after, metallic goth/punk from the UK. I've always described them as Killing Joke meets Motorhead. I was their guitarist for 11 years, but I was a fan before that, and I'm pleased to see they have a new album coming out with their original guitarist back in the fold. In the meantime here's the previous album.

Icarus Witch

Traditional metal with occult lyricism. Often pretty dark.

That's great! Then you should check out The Night Eternal and Lunar Shadow as well. Should be of interest for sure.

Year Of The Goat

...maybe, maybe not SO goth into it, but it feels that way...

The Night Eternal

Basically a new little brother in the wake of Unto Others' success.

Again ALL of these rock so much!

I am SO thankful that I'm finding a lot of bands that really nail this sound.
