Hey folks,
So, most of my BM diet as of late gravitate towards atmospheric, depressive, icy cold, slightly doomy or crazy dissonant madness akin to DsO, BaN and minions. And I'm mostly happy this way. Yet, the other day a friend decided to blast D666's Phoenix Rising and boy what a delight it was to listen to that album after so long. It got me thinking, what new bands are doing BM with as many great riffs as the masters? I don't mind if it has death or thrash metal influences, as long as it is still clearly BM. I am aware of Craven Idol and I love them. Thanks!

Hey bud, you might want to make this same request in the "Black Metal Help Thread" for better results.

It's a fairly broad request but you're in luck: This is my motherfucking bread and butter, AND our system is down at work

First things first, I'm going to assume you don't know a whole lot. I apologize if that's wrong. Black metal is an EXTREMELY riffy form of heavy metal, but you often have to go exploring around the world to find that. In particular the early Greek and Czech scenes both had a strong emphasis on riff-mastery.

Master's Hammer -- These legends of the Czech scene put out two super classics of extremely riff-oriented black metal. Ritual and The Jilemnice Occultist. They are both 10/10 perfect albums in my opinion, although I think Ritual tends to be a bit more popular. Their sounds are VERY similar, except that Jilemnice has more bombast courtesy of some amazing timpani work.

Dig a tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppXC8A_KScg

Mortuary Drape -- The GODS of the Italian black metal scene. They stand completely alone, peerless, possibly in the entire world. These guys answer the question "What happens if we combine the riffing of Venom with the atmosphere of truly evil black metal?". The songs are masterfully written, conveying a spooky, ghostly atmosphere at all times. The perfect riff-heavy soundtrack to your next foray through a mossy tomb. This is personally my favorite black metal band ever.

Dig a tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2boAsAQ-dIE

Rotting Christ/Varathron/Necromantia -- The unholy trinity of Greek black metal. They usually keep it mid-to-jaunty pace and focus on chunky, chock-a-block riffing. Imagine Celtic Frost with a swarthy atmosphere and some creepy keyboard work. Endless reverence for our lord Satan. The first two albums from all three bands is an excellent start.

RC tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTBQEvZvejA

Varathron: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWbZ15ORn4Q

Necromantia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7eAHLlKoFU

Inquisition -- The newest band here. They are extremely popular these days so I'd be surprised if you haven't heard them/heard of them. A very unique riffing style full of huge chiming chords that ring out of the darkness. One of the best and most consistent bands of the last two decades. Two man act, guitar and drums only but you'd never know it with the sheer force they bring.

Dig it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgeMTfoqBds

There are countless other riffy black metal albums out there. Just a few you should look into: Tormentor's Anno Domini, Sarcofago's INRI, Aura Noir's Dreams Like Deserts EP, anything/everything by Agatus & Zemial, everything by Grand Belial's Key, Negative Plane's Et in Saecula, Saeculorum.

Hey man, thanks for your detailed reply, appreciate it! I have a lot to think my teeth in!

I forgot to mention how much I loved Inquisition's Verses from the Multiverse. I remember I was in love with the thing when it came out... but for whatever reason I failed to check out the rest of their discography... any good starting place?

Mortuary Drape is dope and the way you described it hits the nail in the head. There are many bands big into creating atmosphere, but these guys do it in such a way while still creating monstrous songs full of riffs... Just awesome!

I have to check the Hellenic scene as well... Varathron sounded really good to my ears. I am aware of RC of course, though I never explored much.

Now what has been completely owning my life is that Negative Plane album. Holy hell this is everything I want from metal, not just black metal! Who are these guys and why no one talks about them? Are most people even aware they exit? This album is just perfect in every way! Thanks a lot man!

IMO inquisition are a perfect example of a band to be checked out chronologically. start with "incense of rest" and go from there. I think they peaked with the sophomore full-length, but others will disagree. earlier, thrashier stuff is more for specific die-hard fans of inquisition and old colombian stuff.

Hahah I'm glad I decided to throw off a few more mentions at the end! Their debut really is something special. I've been describing it for a few years now as sounding like being trapped inside a Mercyful Fate riff, that's been turned inside out.

Their second album is really strong, but there's way more emphasis on ghostly/spooky mood. Parts of it sound like evil surf music which is rad as fuck to me but I know it isn't evil enough for some folks.

Akhlys is fairly riffy in my opinion. Very melodic and atmospheric with ambient passages while not sacrificing fast, dark riffs.

I would try some of the Greek worshipping black metal bands such as Necromantic Worship, Caedes Cruenta, Ithaqua, Cult Of Eibon, Perverted Ceremony (this one being more akin to Beherit)

These are more focused on creating a dark atmosphere through riffs, similar to Mortuary Drape

I guess it's kinda post-black metal fare, but Gallowbraid, definitely. Very riff-oriented melodic/prog stuff. Great vocals, too. Well-executed, emotional and with nearly all words being discernible.

Extremely riffy black metal that actually borders on traditional metal songwriting at times. Had BST Balrog from Aosoth, Balrog, and Order of Apollyon, who left before the band ditched the black metal and went for a power metal approach (and then split up). But their full length rips.

Sarkrista - Summoners of the Serpent's Wrath is a great bm album full of melodic riffing, very catchy yet well executed black metal. Along with Krolok - Flying High Above the Ruins, it was the black metal album of 2017 for me.

If it's riff orientated black metal you want - you need to check out Sweden's Svartsyn, especially ...His Majesty. Fiery, furiously riff driven, all dirty and blatantly raw with it. Absolute perfection in sonic malevolence, without sacrificing attention to actual song construction.

Tunnels of His Majesty

Dungeons

This album rips.

Behexen's By The Blessing of Satan also needs mentioning here. The perfect ear-bleeding production is much, much weightier than it seems - it's absolutely crushing, with riffs for days. Their latest album is also worth checking out. Really heavy tone and punishing riff work.

Fist of the Satanist

Chalice of Abyssal Water

Death Fortress are certainly worth your time as well. Punishing riffy, goood...

Trail of Graves

The Erasure of Species

Loads more etc...

Here are a few more to add:

Mystifier - Goetia (a mix of mid-paced ritualistic black metal with Sarcófago styled speed bursts):

https://youtu.be/wTDw8BPYjug

Root - Zjeveni (more killer old-school Czech black metal like Master's Hammer):

https://youtu.be/L4d7pHRA2dg

Ophthalamia - A Journey In Darkness (like a weirder and more Swedish Mercyful Fate):

https://youtu.be/wYCcTJDvPjs

Opera IX - Call of the Wood (often dismissed because of their progression into gothic metal, but the debut album is full of killer Italian occult black metal riffage):

https://youtu.be/pOb3-cbqiUs

Havohej - Dethrone the Son of God (80's US black metal songs with an early 90's boost in speed and hatred):

I would suggest giving Young and in the Way a try. There is a pretty big crust influence present, but they have some great riffs, in my opinion.

Check out the album 'Nykta' by Zemial.

Very riff-centric, thrashy black metal with considerable progressive flourishes.

Someone mentioned Zemial earlier, but that album is insanely good. The drums especially are magnificent.

One of my absolute favourite bands is Schattenvald. They have some asskicking riffs in their catalogue imo.

I feel like you probably already know of these guys since they are a big name within the genre, but Carpathian Forest is all about some catchy riffs.

I've been enjoying Avslut's debut album Deceptis a lot. One of the best BM albums I've heard in a long time IMO.

Some powerful riffs in there for sure.

I'd say every BM fan should definitely check this one out.
