Incarrion: Shame about the production because there is some potential here.

Cloacal Kiss: That screeching is fucking demented. Sounds like myspace-era memegrind & I fucking love it!
-------------------------------
Timeghoul: Know & love this band already.

I've heard some Rush here & there but I'm not huge on classic prog. Also, something about their vocals bug me.

Gorguts: I partially agree that they've gotten a bit 'artsy' but still their stuff kills most modern tech death.

A band that got me thinking is dutch band Gore. 100% instrumental noiserock, metal and hardcore but it came with an extensive lyric sheet.
Real cool stuff, it sounds like an improvised jam session that has been going on for far too long.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPNuBsfygSk Their second album from 1987.
Recently found out Gore did 3 Peel Sessions too, so those are worth checking out aswell.

Here are a few that I can think of that I find to be great "thinking" metal for one reason or another. In some cases it is lyrical themes, musical composition, atmosphere, experimentation, or any combo of these things. Let me know what appeals to you most and I can post more stuff based on that.
Disclaimer - Mostly black metal!

Annthennath: is that a fretless bass in the background? Don't hear that everyday, good stuff.

Vimur is solid, really digging their intense yet melodic sound.

I know about Cult of Fire, great band. They conjure a unique atmosphere, chaotic & cathartic at the same time.

I couldn't get into GBK at first but fuck...this is amazing! The lyrics, on the other hand, are embarrassingly childish but hey at least the music kicks ass. Got anything else in this vein?

Stuff like Alcest, Agalloch isn't really my taste. I put on Summoning once a few months & it is enough to satiate me for a while.

The rest seem mostly familiar but I'll give them a shot later on. Thanks man!

I am pretty sure that is a fretless bass in the Annthennath song but I am not totally sure, either way the bass parts are what drew me to that band more than anything.
More fretless bass in this Peste Noire song (very, very long song, fretless bass is really noticeable starting around 9:30)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNYzD58Jy8I&t=571s

Vimur is amazing! My band got to play with them a while back and I know several of the members and have played with their other projects which are a bit different. I'll post a few of those since there isn't much out there with the same vibe as Vimur.
Hellgoat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ0zR9uEsdw
Sadistic Ritual: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr3p-4ifaTU
Ectovoid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbbMMX1y3MU

GBK is one of those bands that is very unique and there isn't much else out there like them. Unfortunately the vocalist was pretty NS but they also wrote some of the best American black metal out there so I forgive them. The closest thing I can think of is actually a death metal side project featuring members of GBK which is once again an amazing band with terrible lyrics. In this case the lyrics are worse and also pretty racist. If you are okay with sepearting the art from the message then this band is great.

Multiple recs

That Peste Noire song raped my ear first (!) but afterwards it was pretty good. Haven't gotten into these guys yet, what else do you recommend?
Hellgoat: Nah man, not what I'm looking for.
Sadistic Ritual: Yes! This thread needs more thrash!
Ectovoid: I can dig this too.
I know about Arghoslent. They can believe whatever they want but their music is extremely good. Thanks for the recs!

Grace Disgraced - Lasting Afterdeaths: Mostly about philosophy of life. The music is complex "thinking man's" also. One of the few bands who can pull off chaos without being dissonant.

Needless - The Spirit of Dark Ages: I imagine as much or more time was put into the lyrics as the music.

Greetings!
Dudes, suggest me some metal like Death, Cynic, Gojira, Portal, Anaal Nathrakh (the little I can understand that is ), Cattle Decapitation, Cephalic Carnage, Ulcerate, Deathspell Omega, Mayhem, Meshuggah etc. that deals with topics other than the cookie cutter themes like metal4lyfe!, beer, Satan, gore etc. Absolutely nothing wrong with that whatsoever but it's not what this thread is about. Basically what I'm (or rather we are) looking for thought provoking bands that actually have something to say, doesn't matter if I agree/disagree with their ideas.

I'd prefer that the recs are on the heavier side of the spectrum but I'm (almost) open to all sorts of metal. Brief descriptions along with recs will be highly appreciated. Looking forward to your recommendations!

Edit 1 | Feb 17, 2017 :
Please feel free to use this thread as you guys use any other major help thread. Share bands & discuss with each other as long the recs & discussions are relevant to the loose criteria set here. The original post has been edited accordingly.

Also, huge thanks to all the contributors.

Cheers!

In terms of thinking man's metal I have two recommendations:

1. Pig Destroyer(http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/pigdes ... ard.html#1)

2.Neurosis(http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/neuros ... rsets.html)

Hey IamDBR just saw your post in the don't like newer metal bands thread and it made me remember this one, you heard it?

Grace Disgraced is giving me those sweet Death vibes, good shit!
Needless is a bit straightforward musically but I enjoyed it, interesting lyrics as well.

Prowler in the Yard had me laughing with nervousness with those creepy as fuck computerized (?) narrations. The grindy bits were pretty satisfying but those sludgy mid tempo parts killed the momentum of the whole album imo.
Never been overly keen on Neurosis despite their legit body of work, anything in particular worth checking out?

Peste Noire is easily one of my favorite bands but it took me a while to warm up to them since they can go absolutely bonkers (for lack of a better term) on some albums. And Hellgoat is great live but not everyone's cup of tea haha.

I'm not a huge thrash guy but I can throw out a few more underground bands I've played with to add some thrash to the thread.
Death of Kings (thrash/heavy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml1tiGu ... EuPUoUQqd9
Suppressive Fire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEBV6MeCtgY
Axattack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9oB_K6kPvM

Also if you liked Ectovoid here is another great death metal band from Eastern Tennessee, their vocalist/guitarist is also in Death of Kings.
Cemetary Filth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MdXtf380bo

Death of Kings is surprisingly good, also I'm loving those vocals man!
Already know about Suppressive Fire, big fan of these guys actually.
Axattack: not bad at all but I'm not quite sold
Cemetary Filth: meat & potatoes osdm but solid nonetheless, I just wish they had more of those slow crushing riffs & generally creative moments
Thanks!

Awfully quiet here guys, anyone got anything?

I've been listening to the latest Dodecahedron & Ingurgitating Oblivion albums, anyone got something in that vein? Crushing, dissonant stuff with complex/proggy vibes.

Also, how about something like the new Hate? I'm digging the themes they are exploring on this one.

My first thought was Atheist, but Droneriot covered that beforehand.

So I'll throw these guys out here: Allegaeon. I'll say nothing more. But I'm a fan of Death, like Gojira, and love Allegaeon.

I like a lot of other completely different stuff, though, so that makes my previous sentence worthless. Give 'em a shot, though. Personal suggestion: Start with Dyson Sphere or 1.618. Or the album Elements of the Infinite.

Nope. That's it. That is all the bands that I know of. It's actually a very short list.

Shared this a few days back in the worthwhile album thread. Having said that I need to give this a couple more listens.
