I'm trying to get into psychedelic rock and floundering a bit. I like Pink Floyd's first two records quite a bit (especially the less whimsical Saucerful of Secrets), but I'm looking for something more along the lines of The Black Angels' 2006 debut, Passover, which combines great, occasionally doomy atmosphere with socially conscious lyrics. So, to recapitulate: please recommend heavier psychedelic rock (60s/70s or modern) with a more ominous and pessimistic rather than whimsical atmosphere. Thanks! :)

Check out one of my favourite bands at the moment, Mugstar, heavy, repetitive psych/kraut-rock from Liverpool (UK).

Beyond that, I'm a big fan of the UK 80s/90s festival/psych scene, I reckon some of these may be of interest:

Crow (UK), active during the 90s playing a mix of psychedelic space-rock and thrashy punk.

If you like them, you may also like Moondragon:

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats are excellent Sabbath orientated psych rock/doom. Yes there is definitely doom influence in it too. I don't know if you do not want that but it is definitely awesome imo! Hope you enjoy it!

Dead Meadow. Howls from the Hills is their most sinister sounding album to date. I hope you'll enjoy it.

If you like Alice in Chains, then Skin Yard is a really good option for you. They were less metallic than AiC but definitely incorporated more psychedelic textures with Sabbathy grooves.

Glad to help mate. :)

By the way, if you don't mind a tad heavier sound you could also check out Ice Dragon. They're sort of like King Crimson meets Sabbath and concurrently uplifting and brooding.
