Thanks for quick responses but I've heard all of that stuff.

Goatpenis would have a lot more 'success' if they changed their name seriously. Their music is pretty killer, although a bit accessible by war metal standards. Anything in this vein perhaps?

Impiety and Abhorer from Singapore might be of interest. Also, while not black metal, grindcore might be of interest, Napalm Death's Scum and Blood's Gas. Flames. Bones. being of the blastier variety.

Looking for newer Blackened Crust and RABM or just Black Metal with a far left ideology in mind. I used to be way into it around 2011 or so when I lived in Seattle but have fallen out of the loop the past couple years.

^Ancst - Moloch for blackened crust

Blood is such an awesome band btw, even those pretentious cunts at DMU think they are hot shit. I actually listened to ND's Scum for the first time a few months back, it completely destroyed my ears. Back then it must have been a real game changer. I have heard of Impiety and Abhorer but never gave them a shot. Thanks a bunch!

Interesting you bring up DMU; that's exactly where I discovered this band (and many other great bands). Even though their ideology stinks, they sure have some great taste in music.

I grew tired of MetalSucks' shoehorned political bullshit, clickbait and just a general hatred for their 'writers' so I went to the next 'best' thing. They are extremely elitist and generally quite despicable people but they do bring up some good shit here and there. Plus that Shitty Metal Review thing they've got going is pretty hilarious when they actually put some effort into it.
......
Anyone looking for some killer bm this year should check out the new Wode and Jordablod albums.

Just take the third path and don't frequent either.

Re: Vemod, I feel this is a band that should have some pretty obvious similar artists and yet I can't think of any. Maybe try Aureole's Aurora Borealis?

In many ways, Vemod's Venter på stormene is like a freezing, minimalistic iteration of Bergtatt. For some reason, it also reminds me of Norns - In Fog They Appear somewhat, although that's much rawer.

My best recommendation would be Vukari's Divination. It often has a similar feeling to the melodies, and it uses a similar style of echoing guitars, but it lacks that particular driving, single-minded, dynamic feel that so many Scandinavian bands seem to have. There's also a good band from UK (I know!) called Ahamkara, which you might want to check out. I'd also recommend Murg's Gudatall, although that's much more on the evil, grim side of black metal, than Vemod's frozen mountaintop landscapes.

I'm much more into Icelandic style nowadays than Norwegian nature black metal. A couple of years ago I could've had more and better recommendations, but it's impossible to keep track of all the stuff you haven't listened to for years. I'd check out what bands are on Nordvis productions, as they seem to specialise in that.

Fuck's sake. I'm listening to Ikledd evighetens kappe right now, and it reminds me very strongly of something I used to listen to (and it's not this album, of course). I just can't place it. Maybe it's some earlier Cosmic Church, because I used to listen to their early releases a lot a few years ago. You could check out Syysauringon vihkimys, and perhaps Unohdetun rituualin planeetta.

Pretty much me at this point. I still look at DMU for some recommendations (they usually recommend a lot of great stuff over there in my opinion), but overall I just use the similar artists feature here on the Archives (and occasionally Bandcamp's tag feature).

I recommend Metal Blast, they aren't extremely political about metal and at least attempt to not bring their political agenda into the music.
Anyways, since we're on that subject, did you know that the same guys who created MetalSucks own the Blast Beat Network (and operate MS as a part of it)? The same BBN who, in turn, owns Metal Injection, Cvlt Nation, and Decibel, among many others. Not really a surprise that all of them have similar politics, with this in mind.

Actually, no, I wasn't. If I was joking, I would've recommended Pantera or something.

These bands have nothing in common.

About the recommendations by others: Thanks, I know them, except for Aureole. Digging it so far!

Yeah, I figured that much, although I'll make the exception for Decibel. YouTube and Bandcamp ftw.
.....
Impiety is really good, kicking myself for not trying them earlier.

Also, Icelandic bm scene is onto some good shit lately. Dissonant, experimental and even somewhat technical, much better than the currently booming atmo/post black fodder.

Something with groove, black n roll swagger and 'beer metal' mentality.

 This needs to be a thing!

Anyway... I'm looking for some cool black/thrash in the vein of Deströyer 666, Nocturnal Graves, Absu, Nocturnal, etc. Any suggestions?

Sadistik Exekution: Aussie proto war metal with a humorous bent and actual riffs
Inculter: Promising new band from Norway
Deathhammer: Raw speed/thrash from Norway
Blood Divisions (Singapore): A bit on the dbeat/crust side
Desaster: German veterans
Aura Noir: More Norwegian goodness, seeing a pattern?
Nifelheim: Swedish sickness
Early Sodom
Sabbat: Japanese legends
Bathory s/t
Bulldozer: Italian cult band
Black Fast: A dirtier darker Vektor perhaps

Maybe even Skeletonwitch (melodeath), Goatwhore (blackened death), Toxic Holocaust (pizza thrash)

I've listened to all of them besides Blood Divisions, Deathhammer, Sadistik Exekution, and Inculter. Will check those 4 out, thanks!

It's Blood Division without the s. Sorry for the typo. They are pretty obscure as it is.
Also try:
Perversifier
Suppressive Fire
Antichrist
The Furor

Fuck. Yes. Sinister Oath is definitely something I will seek. Excellent recommendation man. Has all the cold and cruel melody I'm after without being too busy. Awesome.

Sortilegia is something that's on my to buy list, and is perfect. Sums up the thing I'm after. The rawness is brilliant.

Slidhr and Rebirth of Nefast I own almost everything of (except the demos for now), and I really like - great, great bands both. Warloghe are also a band I've had my eye on for years, but never bothered to purchase anything.

Dark Sonority. See this album all the time while browsing Van Records, but have never checked them out. Interesting... needs more listens.

Zoroastrianism. Never heard of them, until now. A little too clean, dissonant and "uplifting" for me with this style, but warrants further time.

Onda Makter. Hmmm... No. Too blasty, as well as too much business and obvious tremolo. Pretty damn brutal, but doesn't quite fit the request for mine.

Orlok. This is kind of okay (except for the intro...) I guess. Not too bad, just seems to miss that repetition that draws me in with the three tracks I linked.

Blood Tyrant. Pass on this one though.

Thanks for all the reccs.

IamDBR wrote:

Triumphator. Pretty similar to Marduk, and shares their former drummer and current vocalist. Only one album, but it fucking slays.

Heralds of Pestilence
Burn the Heart of the Earth

Tortorum. I would stick with the first album, as it's a riffy, furious little fucker, and slightly different to their second. Still a solid brutal outing.

Fucking Worthless
For the Ruin of All

Death Fortress. These guys have been making a name for themselves, and with good reason. So fucking good.

Scourge of Aeons
Trail of Graves

Lugubre. Pretty damn punishing black metal.

Smashing the Traitors
Decreasing of Human Population

Frozen Shadows. Canadian, blasting goodness. Has some surprises too...

Forsaken Whispers
Under Horrid Skies

Yes.

Old. German black thrash with a old school vibe.

Empire in Flames
Lust in Red

Perversor. Chilean fucking madness!!

Victory Of The Legions Of The Damned
Necrocosmic Revelations

Nocturnal Breed. Super group of sorts from Norway.

No Retreat... No Surrender
Thrash the Redeemer

Ravencult. Fantastic black/thrash from Greece. Morbid Blood is a phenomenal album.

Morbid Blood
The Gates of Bloodshed

Scythian. From the UK, and share a kindred spirit with D666. They lean more into death metal territory, but their second album fucking rules hard. SO fucking good. Seriously.

Beyond the Dust
Penultimate Truth Ultimate Deceit

Craven Idol. Also from the UK, and just as good as Scythian.

Codex of Seven Dooms
To Summon Mayrion

Glad you dug some of that stuff man, especially Sinister Oath. Fyi the sixth band is actually called Prosternatur, not Zoroastrianism (that's the name of the song).

Any recs for epic, melodic stuff in the vein of Thulcandra? Haven't revisited the genre in ages so feel free to drop some more well-known acts.

How about these?

Young & in the Way - When Life Comes to Death: Crust, black n roll, Darkthrone and maybe some Gorgoroth as well
Matyrdod - List: Swedish crust with Maiden riffs
Book of Black Earth - The Cold Testament: Black/death with hardcore/crust leanings
Iskra: Not a fan but they fit the bill

Hey iAm, this is an album from last year that may fit the bill: https://morrowpunx.bandcamp.com/releases. (I haven't read their lyrics, but they're selling their record from a label called "Alerta Antifascista" so I assume they're left-wing.)

Catamenia's 'Location: COLD' is one of the pinnacles of epic, melodic BM. Riffs for days.

I'll throw in Agathodaimon as well. They have more gothic/atmospheric influences but their swansong album 'In Darkness' was especially good and filled with memorable riffs.

So, are there any bands that are similar to Sigh? Ghastly Funeral Theatre in particular is my favourite black metal album of all time, if there are others that are like that I think I'd be in heaven!

I'm not a complete newbie to the genre. I have listened to Emperor, Mayhem, Enslaved, Immortal, Darkthrone. Some bands like Forgotten Tomb etc.

What would you recommend to someone who loves riffs and blastbeats but hasn't heard a lot of black metal.

Aside from riffs and blast beats, what do you like the most? Which of those bands did you like the best, and what albums by them? There's a mind-boggling amount of good black metal, so you'll have to be more specific than that.

If you don't have anything in particular in mind, I recommend checking out what kind of stuff Iceland is pumping out nowadays:

Svartidauði - Flesh Cathedral - This album is utterly evil. It's far darker than anything they made in Norway during the second wave, but it has obvious vibes from Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Satanas.
Zhrine - Unortheta - A deconstruction of black metal, really. Clear, modern production makes it easier to grasp than it might otherwise be. The music itself can be somewhat challenging, but if you get pulled into the atmosphere, you'll definitely enjoy it.

Both are very atmospheric and immersive albums. If they're too dense and you want something more immediate and perhaps more melodic, check out Misþyrming - Söngvar elds og óreiðu. If that sounds too raw or chaotic to be enjoyable, try these:

Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Stellar - Crystal clear with impeccable musicianship and top-notch production. Rooted in melodic black metal, but branches out to more complex territories. Extraordinarily good song building and melody and harmony.
VI - De Praestigiis Angelorum - If it's literally just riffs and blast beats you want, try this. It's 90% guitars and drums album, with some interesting bass work here and there, and adequate but plain vocals. Exciting , creative and original riffs for days.

Ilywhan,

To answer your questions I like the following songs/albums:-

I also really like Transilvanian Hunger by Darkthron:-

And I also really like Judas Iscariot:-

And also Mayhem De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas:-

And also Walknut Graveforests and their Shadows:-

I also like some Ukranian bands like Drudkh and this really cool band called Ygg.

Sorry that's about the extent of my black metal knowledge. Can you recommend something.

PS:I really liked Zhrine

That actually narrows it down quite nicely! I may have a good idea of what you might enjoy now. Also: is there some Drudkh album you like in particular, or pretty much all of them?

Check out these albums:
Sargeist - Satanic Black Devotion
Baptism - Grim Arts of Melancholy
Arckanum - þþþþþþþþþþþ
Nasheim - Solens vemod
Verge - Hatemagic

Let me know which ones you liked best, and which, if any, not so much.
