I'm sorry if this has been mentioned earlier, but can someone tell me the difference between your ordinary Black Metal and Melodic Black Metal?

Is Melodic Black Metal similar to what Melodic Death Metal is to Death Metal?

I'm pretty much new to the Black Metal/Melodic Black Metal genre, so any help would be appreciated.

Also, who are the better bands out there that practice Melodic Black Metal, if there is such a thing?

If you don't have a problem with humorous bands, try Istapp. They play great melodic black metal. Try to find their demo compilation Köldens Union.

I have a request myself, I'm looking for black metal similar to Immortals albums At The Heart Of Winter and Sons Of Northern Darkness (I suppose All Shall Fall is similar too). I really like the melodic riffs and cold atmosphere.

I would say Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black Dimensions. It's an album I loved at the same time I was listening to those Immortal albums and it has some similarities I'd say though alot of little haters might disagree ;)
Also Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia in contrast with Damned in Black. Back then Dimmu Borgir was one horrible blood puking band regardless what they are or aren't today.

Dimmu Borgir before Death Cult Armageddon is pretty good, not the same kind of "cold" atmosphere as Immortal if you ask me but I'll look deeper into those albums.

Great thread. I want extremely hateful black metal, in the vein of Belketre and Mutiilation; insane vocals and raw production are required. I haven't found a single band more hateful than the two I mentioned, so I'll be grateful if someone can find something more hateful.

Dodsferd, perhaps? The earlier material is his best and most hateful. Very similar to Mutiilation. Only thing is, the production may not be as raw as said bands.

Yeah Immortal is pretty damn unique unfortianately. You could try Craft or Urgehal, early Marduk. Their awesome but it is no Immortal.

I've always thought that Keep of Kalessin's Through Times of War was the closest any other band has ever come to sounding like At the Heart of Winter. It's nowhere near as 'cold,' but I think it's about as close as you're going to get. Don't look to later Keep of Kalessin, though, which sounds nothing like the debut. Of course, there's also Imperial Crystalline Entombment, but I've always thought that they were a second-rate, cheap imitation of Immortal.

Also, I love Urgehal's last two albums, but I really don't think that it's that much like Immortal. Immortal's just so unique...

Yes Keep of Kalessin I forgot.

Don't talk about commercial videoclips when a band makes a song like this!

OLD WAINDS is the band you seek. They're not an Immortal clone by any stretch of the imagination, but they provide the best solution to your request so far.

This Arcana Lifeforce clip must be rated or something... When I was a kid this used to show on "Wet n Wild" metal clips and they were puking blood at the start. Used to be way over the top for me when I was a kid. I think it took me several years before I started listening to this!

Old Wainds demo's are not to be missed! Also their new project Nav' I really like.

 I didn't know it was. WHenever I come in, I click the page button, but sometimes it doesn't go through and takes me to the first page. Didn't realize that happened and just happened to see that there. Now I feel like an idiot.

I'm looking for awesome blackmetal / war demo's. please advise demo's only!!!

Not just demo's that were kind of ok or worth a listen or look this band definitely has some talent. No! I mean demo's that were these bands their best work and are awesome enough to listen to over and over again. Let's stick to pure old school black / war metal please, no ambient, atmospheric or deppressive stuff.

Here are some of my favourite:
Tulus - Samlerens Kammer
Baalberith - A Escalada Triunfante
Proclamation - Imperious Jaws of Ire
Conqueror - Anti-Christ Superiority
Von - Satanic Blood
Veles - Triumph Of Pagan Beliefs
Old Wainds demos are awesome
Hate Forest - Scythia
Beherit demos
Mastema - Inhuman Satanik And Evil
Blodulv - Kristkrossare
Death Yell - Vengeance from Darkness
Goat Semen - Goat Semen
Old Funeral demos
Graveland - In the Glare of burning Churches

Damaar (Lbn) - Triumph, Through Spears of Sacriledge

Well, there is Obtained Enslavement, but apparently they're one of a kind, so as long as it is epic and complex it's good.

I would like to request more recommendations for this post. I know of all the ones that were posted but would like to find more. Nifelheim, Destroyer 666, Absu, Flagellator, Destruktor...

I would also like to request black/thrash metal with chaotic riffs/blastbeats and melodic and/or epic tendencies.

edit: Almost forgot, I'm also looking for anything similar to Summonings Lugburz. A lot people seem to not like that album but it's my personal favorite Summoning album and I don't own anything too similar to it.

The reviews for Aaskereia's "Mit Raben Und Wolfen" say this band is pretty much a Lugburz worship band, but I've not heard much Summoning so I can't say. BUUT, that might be what you are looking for.

Hey guys, not a big black metal fan apart from the occasional band/album that I love to death.. Anyway, over the last few months I've been raping Nachtmystiums Assassins: Black Meddle Part I with my speakers, and I was wondering if any of you guys out there can recommend me something similar?

Also, somebody told me that Borgia (whose music I absolutely adore) sound a bit like Deathspell Omega - any pointers of where to start if I were to look into DO ?

Thanks in advance.

I need more early Bathory worship. The main inspiration for this is of course, early Bathory, but also the Chilean band Chainsaw and Ammit to a lesser extent. I'm looking for black/speed/thrash metal done the old way. Preferably with dirty production values. One man bands are welcome, and I don't mind blasting drums as long as the riffs are old sounding.

I've heard a decent amount of "black/thrash" so try to keep it fairly obscure to save us both time. No reason to mention Toxic Holocaust, Nocturnal, Aura Noir, Desaster, Front Beast, etc etc.

Oh and I'm not really into downloading so it would be awesome if the bands suggested actually have obtainable material.

The whole list fits his request? Really?

Bonded By Blood, Sadus, Slayer, Machine Head, Violator, Fastkill, Farscape, Merciless Death, Assault, Dr. Living Dead... and tons more.

Crpyt666, you have a very great list there, with some high quality releases, but don't kid yourself. Alot of those are NOT Bathory worship bands, and quite a few aren't even black/thrash in the slightest!

Yeah sure they're not all total Bathory worship bands but these are the absolute best fast, aggressive and raw Thrash albums ever released and if you're a real fan of early Bathory work I'm sure you will enjoy at least half of it. That makes it a pretty good recommendation list I'd say.

It always depends what you like isn't it. Maybe he's more into Metallica and Bathory is his most extreme band, in this case disregard my list. If he wants raw/black Thrash like Bathory it's an excellent start into obscurity :D

Besides I hate typing and he probably already knows half of it anyways ;)

Necropleasurist was pretty much accurate. That's a fairly lazy way of responding to a specific request. I'd rather you just give me one or two bands you think really fit the bill, and possibly a small explanation of why. That looks like you used iTunes or some shit to compile a random list of things you had on your computer. I've heard the vast majority of it but there are a few bands I haven't heard yet so I'll look them up on the off chance that they fit the bill. I probably just shouldn't have posted in the first place.

I'm looking for bands of any black metal sub-sub genre that are good quality, as well as, lacking lyrics centered around Satanism and the like. I'd like the bands to have intelligent, or narrative lyrics. I already know of Immortal, Burzum, Windir, and Borknagar, just so you know. I happen to listen to all four of those bands.

That's a pretty vague request. I guess I can eliminate all non english singing bands? Then maybe you'd be interested in those bands:

Absu: A black/thrash band speaking about Sumerian, Mesopotamian and Celtic mythology as well as occultism. Most regards Tara as their best though I find their latest pretty killer too.

Ophthalamia: "conceptual stories about Ophthalamia" It's a fantasy world created by one of the members, Jon Nodtveidt (Dissection) was also a member in the beginnings. The band plays a unique more or less melodic style of black metal, pretty good stuff too. Their debut (the only one I heard), A Journey in Darkness has what I would consider as narrative elements. Definitely my highest recommendation for what you're looking for.

Sigh: A Japanese black metal band that was once signed by Euronymous' DSP label for their debut album, Scorn Defeat. Black metal isn't really a good tag anymore, but most of their albums have lots of symphonic elements. Their debut is the closest thing to traditional black metal they released as they later on experimented with keys and all. Their earlier material lyrics were mostly inspired by Japanese occultism and such, their ep Ghastly Funeral Theatre being the pinnacle of their oriental/occult sound. Infidel Art is one of my favourite from the band and Hail Horror may fit for the narrative you may searching but more in form of the actual songwriting than lyrics. The album is considered by the band as a "movie without images" instead of a soundtrack.

Sorry for being vague. I don't really mind what language is being sung in. Thanks, too. I've been meaning to check out Sigh.

Yup well it's not a random itunes list. When you look around at lists and collections on this site it's often all so random and tasteless so please respect a good thing when it comes by. Everyone can name some bands as "Bathory worshop" but when you know what other stuff he plays it gives you a far more accurate way of knowing you will like what he recommends. Something a stupid little description will never be able too.

There are so much other people posting their crap lists with latest releases on this site. But somehow mine always gets these stupid remarks, I don't wonder why and I won't stop posting it every now and then because these are and always will be the albums and artists that really deserved the attention and not those other fools. Even though a majority might not recognise them or just has a taste for slower music.

Yeah, but, it is a real shame when little to none of those were "Bathory worship" bands, ya know? I mean, that IS what he requested after all..

I have no idea when a band worships Bathory but whoever worships Bathory has a high possibility of worshipping these albums. If he needs Bathory worship albums for a school project I'm very sorry, otherwise any kickass album is one most people take for granted.

If he knows his way around and has some specific taste one quick glance at my list will tell him if he has to put effort in listening to this or not so what's the problem?

I'm not going to argue any more after this post, because it is stupid.

"Bathory worship" is simply a band/album that sounds very similar and pays homage to Bathory. He asked for those specific bands/albums, and that is the problem. You didn't name any specific bands. Instead, you posted your usual list of thrash albums.

For example: Warhammer pays direct tribute to Hellhammer. That is Hellhammer worship. His request would be for bands/albums that do the same thing, just for Bathory.

Isn't it obvious? Now, please move on. This was stupid to begin with.

I'm not quite into the "Norwegian Black Metal" sounding bands. I know the obvious leaders of the scene, but that is about it. I want more stuff similar to the hyper-riffing of Tsjuder and earlier 1349. Personally, the "emotional" and atmospheric side of BM is more to my liking, and have very little of what some people would consider "true" black metal. Any suggestions?

Also, I don't like the melodic Swedish sound. Finnish black metal in the vein of Horna, Behexen, Sargeist, and Satanic Warmaster are also quite similar to what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if it is exactly what you are looking for, but you might want to check Musta Surma, they did a couple of splits with Horna and are really good black metal in my book, particularly their 97 demo. And if you don't mind a little of keys (only for texture), they were called Crimson Evenfall before and it is some pretty killer stuff too.

Thanks. I already have that split and don't mind the Musta Surma side, but it's good. I'll look into Crimson Evenfall.

Songs similar to the riffing in these are mostly what I'm looking for. I don't really know how to explain it..

Pretty much just fast, relentless black metal in the vein of the Norwegian style of riffing.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend me some black metal with an extremely dark atmosphere, good production, and lyrics concerning acts of pure evil. Think black magic, demons, and such. Thanks in advance.

Seeing as how we seem to operate on the same wavelength (musically speaking) most of the time, I can't really think of much that you probably haven't heard of that isn't some incredibly obscure demo band. But I'll try anyway.

Mephisto of italy might fit the bill. As far as Black/thrash goes this band is definitely one of type that like to emphasize the "old" in old-school. They've got the fast, but not ultra speedy, very weighty riffs, psuedo-harsh growls and slow drumming (along with a complete lack of synths) that typify old black/thrash. Good stuff. Both albums are pretty similar, so just choose whichever has the more fancy name.

Mefisto is a band that you may have heard of. Seeing as how the only material released by this band was in the mid 80's, it would be a stretch to call this band anything other than old school black/death/thrash/speed/whatever metal. Just get The Truth as it compiles all of their released material and doubtless more readily available than their original, very obscure demo's. very good production quality too for something so old.

Warhorde is a band that I'm a bit reluctant to recommend. I happen to love them, but the band is definitely a love it/hate it deal. And they're signed to Barbarian Wrath (meaning you've probably already heard of them). it's a one man band (the name "Warhorde" is a bit ironic, eh?) and the main main behind the outfit probably cannot play drums, as the band utilizes a very obnoxious drum machine. Also, the music is simplistic to a fault. it's almost like what I'd imagine Bathory would sound like if Quorothon was influenced mostly by VON. Anway, if you decide to check them out then know that the band is putting out a new album this year. There are some samples of the new album on the barbarian Wrath page.
