Check out The Morningside. Their album "The Wind, The Trees and the Shadows of the Past" sounds like a mix of Agalloch and old Katatonia.

Also try Fen from the uk, only herd a few of their tracks and the they sound excellent, have ordered the debut based on this. Atmospheric Black Metal sound like Agalloch mixed with Alcest, getting good reviews so far.

Unable to find any Fen but I listened to a song by The Morningside (the name escapes me) and very very good. Thanks very much \m/

Can anyone recommend some good folk metal bordering on neofolk? Something in the vein of Krynitza and Volkolak's more recent material.

I was wondering if someone could recommend me a band that is extremely epic, pretty fast, good harsh vocals (non-bad vocals is what I mean), and is well, just good. Even though they are not Folk or Viking metal, something along the lines of Destroy Destroy Destroy.

Destroy Destroy Destroy's Battle Sluts is one of the biggest surprises of 2009 so far for me. It's great. Anyway, even though popular opinion seems to disagree, I would suggest checking out Cadacross' Corona Borealis for something somewhat similar-- it's fast, epic, symphonic, the harsh vocals are fine, plus it has a bit of a folk influence (hence, apt for this thread). Enjoy.

Destroy Destroy Destroy is such a horrible name for a band, especially one that apparently plays the style of music they do. I confess it's stopped me from checking them out.

Somehow I think it would be an awesome name for an apocalyptic neofolk band.

Haha, I don't really like the name either, as Empyreal said. I thought it was another deathcore band when I first heard their name. However the music speaks for itself. As long as you don't take it seriously, Battle Sluts is highly enjoyable. But anyway, this isn't really the right thread to be talking about them....

So back on topic, I just wanted to give a general recommendation for Diadema Tristis, from Argentina. Ways of Relief is a surprising display of really gloomy, depressive tribal folk music. Keep in mind I said "music", not "metal" as only a few tracks are really metal. Don't let it deter you though, as the folk instrumentation is absolutely beautiful. Kudos to Avestriel for pointing them out to me last year.

ManofWar, check out Spectral (Ger). They call their style "Black Viking Power", an pretty apt description, methinks.

I think you might like Temnozor's stuff, but only their newest album. Agalloch is also there, even though I would only rec "The Mantle" and "Pale Folklore".

I really recommend Temnozor though, Folkstorm of the Azure Nights is a genius record. Unless you wanted only screaming, then it's probably not for you.

Thyrfing, great dark and gloomy viking metal.

And Finntroll newest album isn't depressing, but it's easily not as 'fun'. Rok on Nattfodd is a really sad and depressing acoustic piece.

What's about Wotanorden, Kroda, Velimor and last song on Pestpogrom album (Totenburg)? It's got folky feel to it.

After my thread was locked some time ago, I´ll try it here (now I know it´s better to do so instead of opening anew thread) :-)

I´m a huge Bal Sagoth fan and I have been looking for similar bands for years but I couldn´t find any coming close to their sound.

I know there are tons of Sympho BM bands etc. but the sound of BS, esp. the keys/synth, are somewhat unique.

BS plays some kind of bombastic-fanfare-like-trumpet-marching stuff (synths/keys mainly producing that sound), don´t know how to describe it.

If you know them - think of the glorious marching sounds in

"To Dethrone the Witch-Queen of Mytos K'unn"
"And Lo, When the Imperium Marches Against Gul-Kothoth..."
"Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule"
(and a lot more tracks)

like here beginning at 04:10
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq3g_nRHGyo

This is def. not the standard way of Sympho BM.

The only band I found coming somewhat close to that was Baranduin..

Some might mention SUMMONING or HOLLENTHON, THERION etc. right away, but imho their sound is different.

Any ideas?

I'm looking for folk metal bands like Finsterforst, Finntroll and Korpiklaani that have accordions and that same sort of sound, but with clean vocals instead of growls. Suggestions?

Check out Primordial's album The Gathering Wilderness, it's not folk/viking metal in the strictest sense, but it is depressing. Also Sig Ar Tyr is kind of Bathory-esque and downer music, and Otyg is more folkish but their music is minor key and downbeat too.

It's time I contributed to this thread. There are so many bands I'd like you guys to check out.

First that I've looked at is:

- Morok: A "HOLY SHIT" kind of band. Pagan/Black has never sounded so amazing. Heavy, HEAVY guitars that give off that pagan vibe. The vocals are fucking sweet. I really, really, really recommend their demo In the Forests of Slavia. You won't regret picking this crazy fucker up.

- Hantaoma: More Folk Metal with melodeath influence. Great vocals, with superb folk influence. This band is one of the reasons I just love Folk Metal. Malombra is a must have!

-Arkona: A band that every folk lover knows. If you haven't checked them out yet though, I'd suggest going with Vo Slavu Velikim !.

- Claim the Throne: Wow, very gritty. If you can handle low-fi folk/death metal then you should be good with this one. Includes some great death metal vocals and pretty damn good folk clean vocals. It's fast and folky. Melodeath and Folk put together with synths and shit.

- Ha Lele: Holy fuck! I found them out a few weeks ago and just listened to their album called Pabudimas. Probably one of my favorite folk bands right now. From Lithuania, these guys just are so...amazing! Very Temnozor like growls. Just the vocals though, the album itself is pretty melodic. Folk interludes in the songs.

- Bucovina: A great band with a very solid debut. Reminds me very much of Heidevolk.

-Hordak: Nice gritty folk/black metal. Hailing from Spain, this band means buisness. Reminds me of Heol Telwen in a small sense. The Last European Wolves is a great album!

-Black Lotus: A great viking/black band. I think this is one everyone would like. Really interesting. Harvest of Seasons is genius.

- Rauta: I really don't know how to describe this band. Folk metal that is for sure. The vocals are really great. Progressive in a small sense. Very unique in terms of how they use their instruments. Haudanmaa is a great piece of folk.

I'm still looking at all my CD's and computer and I keep finding bands that I forgot about. I don't know how I forgot about some of them. Anyways, have a look. You won't regret it. You can download some of their albums on Blogspots to see if you want to buy.

Share some feedback when you get the chance folks and I'll compile a new list.

I'd love to recommend another band to you folks!

- Allvater: Amazing melodic black/viking/death metal. The vocals are just sick as all hell and are more death metal then black. I just got their debut 'Vater', and I must say it's brilliant.

http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=93461

PM me if you'd like the link for the download. Since I don't think there are any copies available at the moment. You won't be disappointed at all. Pretty great production.

Thronar is pretty good and comes a bit near the sound I´m looking for though I dislike the more "jolly" parts sounding like Ensiferum, Finntroll etc.. But there are indeed some bombastic, marching pieces on their albums!

Peng Peng, try Destroy Destroy Destroy.

This definitely does not work if you are looking for Bal-Sagoth type bands. Thronar was recommended, obviously if that works for you then Turisas should be noted although I don't really think this works.

Bal-Sagoth is such a unique band that has a style I've never really ever come across by anyone else, so I assume you'd be really hard pressed to find a similar band. PM rexxz about it, it's his favorite band and I'm sure he would know about it.
