My kid has started singing/piano lessons and her teacher gave her a few songs to listen to with lots of different lyrics layered over each other being sung at the same time, to help develop her ear being able to pick out the different parts. They're all mostly from musicals, but she's started to really get into metal recently so I want to encourage that a bit more! So basically I'm looking for songs that have something similar to Wake of Magellan by Savatage (the part starting from about 3.45)

It's not actually a metal song, it's a ballad, but Blind Guardian's "Curse My Name" comes to mind, particularly the section around 2:55.

I was trying to think of more examples of this but there's not really that many examples in metal of multiple layered lyrics that I could think of. I dunno, maybe there's some other examples in Europower out there since that's not exactly my area of expertise.

If you think heavy metal and USPM are the same, why use the term USPM at all?

Tobias Sammet likes to do this with Edguy / Avantasia. There's probably more, but these are the ones that came to mind (tried to time stamp the relevant moments). Most of these have two different vocal lines going on, except Land of the Miracle, which gets three going.

Land of the Miracle
Farewell
The Seven Angels
The Pharaoh
The Piper Never Dies
The Eternal Wayfarer

Not metal, but the mid section (briefly) and outro to Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meat Loaf (incredible song).

Arjen Lucassen's bands, e.g. Ayreon and Star One, have several singers, and sometimes there are overlapping vocals. But often it's like characters taking turns. Here's one example:

Spoiler: show

At 9:30 mark

"Nymphetamine" comes to mind, I like the version where Sarah Jezebel Deva is singing with Dani Filth--One of my favorite songs by Cradle Of Filth....
